Hi I've just had An Idea - amazing, I know.

Here it goes: If you move place the Science Board at te bottom of the Board List and have Number Crunching of Cafe Seti at the top, then maybe less of the questions on how to set up Seti/BOINC and moans about it will land up there.

Any Opinions?

Probably I've been drinking too much coffe again, but I'm wondering if someone is phishing for email addresses on the Q&A forums. And very crudely too.

The reason is that I've noticed that quite a few posts from newbies asking for help on getting seti up and running , but wanting that help e-mailed to them at an address in the post.

Now I can believe one person being naive enough to post their e-mail address on a public forum, but I think I've noticed at least 5. As they say in the Westerns, 'Once is coincidence, twice means someone's out to get you'.

But if this is some sort of phishing expedition, do they really think we are stupid enough to fall for it? That's when I started to think it was the coffee.

He did 'take action'.

And they've added an option to that form to merge your new Seti/BOINC account with your old Seti@Home account. But you will still need your old Seti@Home password to do this.

We need some more information than that.
Talking about information, did you look at the Seti@Home Home Page, Server Status or Technical News?

The BOINC Wiki is also informative.

Just guessing, I would say that your problem is caused by the fact that the servers are down until sometime on Saturday.

Post:
I've thought for a long time that the Email you recieve with your account details should have some basic instructions on downloading BOINC, installing it and then activating SETI@home.

Obviously these would have to be for all 3 main platforms.

It would probably reduce some of the basic mistakes people make when installing for the first time.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

Sorry about causing confusion :(

SETI@home II is the formal name of SETI@home/BOINC,just as the origional is now known as SETI@Home Classic. I was trying to distinguish between the new SETI, the old SETI and BOINC and forgot that people don't even use the name SETI@Home II (even me).

Also sorry about the bit about instructions in the email. I've thought for so long that the should be there that I started believing they were.

my mistakes :(

Using Firefox 1.0.6 on Linux, noticed in one thread (possibly Cafe Seti) that the +/- buttons (didn't try to use them) were on top of each other, no probs otherwise, could post fine.

PS: Nope, wasn't 'Welcome to Cafe Seti' or any other I rechecked, probably just a graphical glitch.

Anyway , just try and be patient and steer clear of the 'Update' button - it's hard I know.

Thank you for answering. Unfortunately your answer assumes that I "hit the update button" more than once. I didn't.
If it indeed had been so, I would not have been surprized receiving a message saying "sorry dude, you just tried that X seconds ago; try waiting".

A little explaining is therefore needed:
1) I didn't have a GUI running, so I didn't have a button to hammer.
2) I ran the client from the command line with the -update_prefs switch. Once.

Therefore I find the log message weird; I boot up, I start BOINC/Seti from the command line asking for an update of prefs, and then I'm told I just tried that 3 seconds ago.

I suspect it's a bug: I start up my client, which automatically contacts the server because it hasn't done so for a while, and afterwards the client processes my command line option/switch, which tells it to contact the server, and I get a strange log message stating that I'm updating too fast.

What I was more worried about are regular users who follow the advice about looking it up in the BOINC Wiki, and find the same non-explanation that I found.
Adding statements about people having to be patient is a good idea, but when the problem also could be a bug, it will add to the non-information in some cases.

Sorry :(

I seem to remember a Thread in Number Crunching where people getting this error. It turned out their computers clocks either were badly out of sync with the servers, or running too fast. I'm pretty sure they added a margin of error to the timeout to take care of this. it could be related. Did you sync your clock to a time-server between the 2 contacts? I think this also caused the problem.

Don't quote me, I can't find the thread, so I could be talking through my hat (again) :(

Thank you for your technical assistance.

Thank you. I can see my detail and results on WWW browser.

With your assistance, nothing worried about me now. Thank you.
I didn't delete or edit inside 'BOINC Data' folder. Everything is saved.

I use a broadband connection.

I have got some messages just like;
2005-09-04 12:30:02 [SETI@home] Deferring communication with project for 2 minutes and 25 seconds

I use the BOINC standard GUI Manager.

Glad to be of help :)

As are on broadband, if you leave Seti/BOINC alone it will eventually upload the results of the remaining workunits to the SETI servers and ask for more work by itself. The Seti servers were down for over a week and only came back online last week, so things may take longer than they normally should.

That error message just indicates that your BOINC client contacted the servers too soon after the last contact. Possibly you told it to update? It is not serious, the servers just refuse contacts made less than 10 minutes apart to allow all the clients a chance to contact them.

The BOINC-Wiki explains all this better than I can. It is a great source of information on BOINC and SETI@home II and the other BOINC-powered projects.

PS: I asked if you used BOINC manager, because I only realised after starting to answer your question that I wouln't be much help if it was a Mac-specific problem :)

I see you have uploaded 3 results for which you haven't been granted credit yet, it can take a day or 2 normally. The Transfers view only lists results which are being uploaded to Seti. If the upload succeeds or fails, they are removed from the Transfers view.

Is it the results for the other workunits that you are worried about? Seti/BOINC normally only stores workunits that it has not completed and results that have not yet uploaded, on your computer. Do not delete any files in the BOINC directory, it is a much more complex program than Seti Classic.

Are you using broadband or dial-up?
What sort of error messages have you been getting?
Are you using BOINC Manager or the menubar application?

Edit: minor corrections and expanded explanation

Congradulations, you've completed some workunits and just have to wait for the credit to be granted :) This may take some time due to the servers/databases borking recently.

With regards to 4) 'Pending Credit' has been turned off for so long that most of us have forgotten about it. Since before October 2004 at least, when I registered.

4) and 5) As the others have said, It takes a while to form a quorum and validate the workunits. The BOINCWiki explains the details of this quite well. This is the nearest we have to a 'BOINC for Dummies' book and it is well worth a visit. Remember one thing, credit claimed and credit granted almost always differ.

6) If you have been looking in files in your BOINC directory remember another thing. Look but don't change! Otherwise, if you are talking about the small text below your Cross- Project ID on your 'Your Account' page, this refers to the data used on Leaderboards and BOINC Statistics websites. See the 'Project Statistics' for a few.

Edit : Awful spelling

You don't have to be a computer genius to install BOINC and Seti. I'm not. First check that your computer has more than 64MB of memory. If it has, you are good to go.

Then, carefully read the instructions on the SETI@Home II website and also the guide at the BIONCWiki.
To activate your account, you enter your SETI@Home Classic password and your e-mail in the form on the SETI@Home II website.

Then you should download BOINC, and install it.

Then when you recieve the email, read the instructions in the e-mail , start BOINC Manager, click on the 'Attach to New Project Button' and enter the details in the window that pops up, exactly as they are in the e-mail, without any spaces at the end, beginning or anywhere else. the web address goes in the box that says 'Url' and the string of numbers goes in the box that says 'Account Key'. Then press 'OK'.

It would seem that you have already activated your account, which is the worst part for a lot of people, and all you need to do is get BOINC and Seti up and running. It may seem daunting to do this but it isn't really. The servers are running again, and the backlog is clearing fast, so it should be easier to get SetiBOINC going now :)

I believe that if you asked them really nicely and provided as much info as possible (but only give the info if they contact you), the admins have occasionally been able to recover accounts in the past. Unfortunately they are extremely busy at the moment because of the events of the last couple of weeks, so I would'nt hold my breath.

But hopefully you still have your SETI@home password,in which case registration is a breeze.
