I have a single core computer:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 CPU
Ge Force 9400 GT PCI card
1 Gb DDR 3200 RAM
80 Gb WD HDD
Windows XP 64-bit

For some reason the computer, overnight, decided to start crunching all of the work units at one time. Normally the CPU works on one and the GPU works on one. I deleted BOINC and downloaded a newer version. Same thing, the computer slows to a dead crawl trying to crunch so many at one time. If anyone can help me I would be apprecitive. Thanks.

Before I had a basement I had to throttle back to 100MHz (PC3200 DDR)in the warm weather. Now they can run wide open year 'round. Since mine are both single cores I'm getting left behind in the stats. I paid a lot of money for that AMD FX-57 CPU. It runs good and just can't see tossing it yet.

Still there are some that run forever it seems. My mighty Dell gn 233 with 256 Mhz. of vaunted EDO RAM just will not die. It crunches day and night (not SETI very often) and has for years. Just a cleaning now and then and it reboots and goes. They just don't build them like they used to.

I crunch for SETI@Home only.
If there's an outage and I've run out of work, I shut my computer off.
There's no point in getting hysterical over technical problems and throwing a hissy fit isn't going to make the problem go away.

That's all I do too. If we really get problems solved and lots of work then y'all stand back. The mighty P-233 will be back with it's vaunted EDO ram. You have been warned.

Working with very limited funds. Getting paid little for what they do and know. Listening to all the Pi$$ing & moaning & bitchin' & whining from from people who understand little of what the staff and volunteers do to keep this program going. Beating the corporate bushes to replace equipment that dies. I think it if you total that up = Outstanding Performance.

I find your math in error sir.

I respectfully submit that there is no need to panic. All is going according to plan.

As a long-time Wall St. trader I can assure you that no one makes a dime panicking. You will not make any headway panicking here either. Let's relax, pull the cork on something smooth, support the SETI folks and trust in their expertise. My Canadian friend here has the right of it. Things have a way of taking care of themselves if you allow for it.

I'm not here to split hairs with you or anyone else. Congress cut the money off in the early 90's to NASA on SETI. Short-sighted people like Sen. Richard Bryan and Rep. Silvio Conte were two of the culprits. I can't help it of Proxmire is short-sighted as well. Restoring the funding will bring SETI more into the public eye. Indirectly it may help the project. I fail to see where it would hurt. We're talking about only 4 mil. That's almost nothing to Congress. Doing nothing will not get us anywhere. Anyone on this board that thinks SETI deserves a Golden Fleese Award shouldn't be here.

It might be a good idea to get on Congress's case. They have for years been wringing their hands over the fact that American kids are woefully lacking in math and science. A few grants might just be the thing from Congress to SETI in the spirit of getting young people more interested in science. SETI is science and fun at that. I intend to rattle their cages on it. By not signing on we can accuse them of not being serious when they bring up our young people being behind in science and math. They certainly have a long history of pissing away money on projects that do us very little good.

The way i see it, the Seti team is under no obligation at all to keep us in work, or provide amusement for us. It's their project, they can run it as they see fit.

They aren't answerable to us, they don't owe us anything. If one doesn't want to crunch, there's always someone new to come along and replace them.

Well said and I agree. BOINC provides us with other toys to play with until this one is fixed. I see a lot of "fair weather friends" here. Eric and company are suffering through this streak of bad luck and I am content to hang in there with them, offer encouragement and a little financial help too. During the down times I crunch for another project.

You probably got well-paid for it too. These folks do it as a labor of love and are paid precious little if anything. These people work hard here and deserve their time off. If you are not satisfied with their efforts, nobody is stopping you from stepping up and helping out. I see a lot of bi**hing for number of green stars out there. I for one have stepped up and increased my donations. If these 2 million out there put up a dollar or so a year there would be a vast improvement. Don't sit back and whine. Step up and help out all the more if you truly believe in what they are trying to accompolish.

You folks that run SETI do the very difficult with precious little and occasionally the impossible with nothing. I'm sure I speak for the majority of us when I say we are thankful for all that you do. Thanks too for keeping us abreast of the technical difficulties despite the fact that some of it's lost on a lot of us (me included), but still it's nice to be included.

I am an Oldtimer too {though others were here before me}. I started crunching with my Pentium 200 w/32 megs of SIMM EDO RAM after hearing about SETI on Art Bell's radio show early one morning. Things have really changed over the past 10 years.
