Just for the sake of observation--(and maybe more troubleshooting info for the Berkeley Scooby Gang):

All three of these work units were reported within the same time frame.

Mine on 28 Jan '06, Geek@Play's on 1 Feb '06, and Pooh Bear's on 2 Feb '06.

Perhaps this period was rife with "sticky" workunits...

Anyways--just my two cents...

Hello, fellow crunchers...

I noticed when I switched my OS on some of my older machines from Windows to Linux, I could no longer merge the hosts.

This really is not too big a deal, since as soon as the results for each non-mergeable machine go away, the retired host can be deleted.

So far, so good--and this is exactly what happened for 2 of the 3 machines I switched from Windows to Linux.

The third machine has a result stuck in the system somehow at Berkeley, and it won't let me delete it from my list of computers--and I was just curious about it.

This is definitely not the sort of issue that would keep me awake at night--I am just curious!

Here's the link to the Ex-Host: 1736111

Here's the link to the result that won't go away: 211885240

The link to the work unit itself doesn't work--it just sends me to an otherwise blank page which states "Unable to handle request" followed by "can't find workunit"

As I said--this isn't any burning issue--probably just some sort of glitch beyond my comprehension anyway... But I'm interested in learning what I can here, so any enlightenment would be appreciated!

Take care, everyone...

Sorry about the delay replying Doc.

This issue rang a bell, but I haven't had any luck locating where it was the last time I saw it. It been over a year IIRC.

In any event maybe someone else will get their memeory jogged and pop in with something more tangible.

I've seen this before too.

I guessed that maybe the time estimates were just getting funky toward the end of the work units--because they'd sometimes count up for a while, then jump down several seconds.

The time I most unfondly remember the upward counting thing was back in August, when those "Evercrunch Special" work units were being sent out. Those workunits' completion times would be going up right from the very start. A couple of those work units ran for 25+ hours on my fastest machine before finally erroring out, and giving me zero credit. Many frustrated crunchers opted to abort those horrid work units--which, in turn, caused each to be sent out to yet another user--thus ruining someone else's day (or two)... That discouraging experience can be read about here and here.

That is not likely to be your problem though--as Matt and the Scooby Gang at Berkeley got it sorted out!

As long as your work units eventually do finish crunching, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Second, when you run as a service you actually get more comprehensive logging than when you run as an application, since the CC writes new events to the stdoutdae file by default and appends new sessions to the end of the file. When you run as an application the log is lost when the session ends unless you have redirected CC IO with a command line switch.

Alinator

Ah, I see!

I haven't run BOINC as a service in a while--since many revisions ago in a galaxy far, far away--and I guess maybe some things have changed since then.

Shortly after SETI2's launch, I set up SETI and BOINC to run as a service. Back then, I thought it had behaved as I'd described--but I guess not.

I just was trying to help out with my limited (and erroneous) knowledge... ;)

Thanks for the enlightenment, Alinator!

Hmmm... Do you run BOINC as a service?

I'm wondering, because if you run BOINC as a service, and nobody is logged on to the computer (or if someone else logged on, who is not running BOINC Manager), it will continue to run and crunch--but unless the BOINC Manager is running, it won't chart these messages...

Hi guys. 1st, Is it my imagination or are the linux boxes faster? It seems thar they are processing wu's faster than windows.

IMHO, yes. I have three ancient dinosaur machines which were struggling to run Windoze XP Pro. Since they've been switched to Linux, they run quicker, they don't crash anymore, and they definitely are crunching faster.

I didn't document their previous times, but I'd say my numbers have improved by a good 20%.

Anyways, that's been my experience!

In order for the more educated folks who frequent this board to be able to best answer your query, I think you may need to further describe your intended uses.

I know you want this box to do a lot of crunching, but what else? Do you plan on doing any video editing maybe? What about gaming?

[edit] Oh, and how much do you plan on spending? [/edit]

Anyways, I'll leave your reply to the experts!

If the demand is for about 9 per second, which is reasonable for the current WUs, the extra 5 go into "Results ready to send" and build it at 18000 per hour. That seems to roughly match the climb rate on Scarecrow's graphs after the initial jump which was probably due to the stats page being stuck.
                                                                Joe

Thanks, Joe, for the link, and the explanation...

I am not equipped to comprehend most (if not all) of the processes on Berkeley's end--so it's nice when folks like you and John take the time to sort it out!

If there are more tasks available than the current work request requires, the results to send are selected fairly randomly. This means that some of the tasks in your queue may wait a few hours before they are sent to someone else.

Makes sense to me...

Still, it seems like it jumped pretty quickly from 10 "Results ready to send" on the server status page earlier today to "241,316" (as of 12 minutes ago)...

At a result creation rate of just over 14 per second, wouldn't that have taken a bit more time to build up than has been available since the weekly outage ended--especially considering that a multitude of those created results would have been downloaded by the sea of hungry crunchers out here?

Hmmmm...

Granted--I haven't checked all my pending results, but it would seem that a great deal of them have been reissued or something...

A significant number are listed as "unsent" now, whereas most were previously awaiting another host to eventually complete them...

Also, the number of results being created has exploded into a rather staggering number today.

Am I wrong to assume these things are related?

Did a whole bunch of stale ones end up being reissued or something? The reason I ask, is I've been following a pretty long discussion about deadline shifts at the Tech News board...

Just curious...

Happy crunching!

Hello, folks...

Not meaning to sidetrack this discussion too far, but I too am pretty new to Linux.

I elected to download the Debian Linux image, but not for any real reason beyond the fact that it was easy to find, and had reliable updates available from the Portland State University servers.

So far, so good--I've optimized my Linux boxes, and they're up and running--but I have not felt bold enough to tackle any major tasks as of yet...

I must say, that creating application "Launchers" (shortcuts), and configuring my networking settings (required for one of my finikier machines) have not been difficult tasks. For a Microsloth Windoze guy, I've actually found Debian to be much easier than I anticipated (so far).

I almost wish I'd been bold enough to venture into Linux sooner! My older machines perform far faster, and they don't require either the same amount of hard drive space, nor the RAM that Windoze XP Pro did. Having such a more efficient OS, combined with the optimized Chicken apps, I'd estimate that they've improved their crunching times by 20% or better (though I haven't documented this).

In short, Yay for Linux!

No contributor to SETI@Home should feel like their value to the project is only porportional to the volume of work their computer(s) accomplish.

We all count--that's the beauty of distributed computing!
