1) Questions and Answers : Preferences : SETI Logo image crashes BOINC (Message 23486)

Post:
Hi,

I configured my SETI settings to use the logo image at http://www.usask.ca/images/logo-curved.jpg

This did correctly download the image and display it on my SETI screensaver. However since the system came up on Sept. 7, several things have happened.

BOINC tries to download the logo image, complains that the URL is invalid or the image is in a bad format (it wasn't), then BOINC crashes. The icon stays on the "start" menu's active tasks area, until I move my mouse over it, then it disappears.

This has happened both in Windows XP SP2, and Windows 98. I am using BOINC version 4.07, and SETI version 4.03. I had separate settings for work, home, and school, but the logo image was identical in all three.

I did manage to fix this by changing my SETI@HOME settings to remove the logo image. The FIRST time I start BOINC after that, it crashes again. However, after that it seems to work fine.

I think the logo image follows the rules. Only 3088 bytes. 110 x 107 pixels. But even if it doesn't follow the rules, it shouldn't crash the system. I should just get a message telling me it is not an acceptable image.

Thanks,

2) Questions and Answers : Windows : BOINC 4.05 keeps aborting/crashing (Message 19586)

Post:
Hi,

I just updated to BOINC version 4.05 so I could continue to run SETI@home. I've also been subscribing to "precdictor" and "climate prediction". Not so much because I'm interested in those projects, but because I want to get some work done while waiting for SETI to get its act together.

Anyway, I've run into a new problem. The version 4.05 boinc client keeps crashing and aborting on my computer after a few minutes. Is anyone else having this problem?

I swear, be better find Aliens soon, because it's looking like only they can get our software to work right ...

FOLLOWUP:

I just reinstalled version 3.20 of the Boinc client. Then, I installed the 4.05 client again. Started it up, got SETI and Climatepreditor work units, and they seem to be working fine now. No crashes.

I also noticed I still had the old SETI working and removed that, but I don't think that affected this issue.

This is happening on an IBM Thinkstation, dual processor 3ghz Pentium 4 computer. ID number 151814 for the Seti staff if you want to see more details.

FURTHER FOLLOWUP:

No good. Now it's also happening on several of my other computers. Different processors, different Windows operating systems, nothing in common between them.

It appears that when the problem does start to show itself, its always when it is connecting to SETI.

This is getting really frustrating. I've been a SETI user since 1999 with almost 50,000 hours on the old SETI@home. I've never had to put up with the crap I've been running into with this new "improved" version. It's frustrating me enough to make me want to get out of SETI altogether. If the software is this buggy, then how can I trust it isn't introducing security problems, or otherwise going to screw up my system.

I think I'm going to dump BOINC, and move back to the old SETI version. I just hope they get their act together before FORCING us to use this new piece of garage.

3) Message boards : SETI@home Science : Radio Telescopes on the Dark Side of the Moon (Message 15629)
Posted 20 Aug 2004 by Profile Kevin Lowey
Post:
Hi,

I admit I don't know much about the technology behind radio telescopes. However, my understanding is that they suffer from radio interference from Earth. Look at all the work SETI has to do to weed out terrestrial transmissions.

If that's the case, then has anyone ever suggested a mission to build a radio telescope on the far side of the moon? That would put the moon between the telescope and Earth and block out all the noise coming from the Earth.

Launch a lander on the moon. Perhaps with a huge unfolding mylar dish (which could perhaps double as a solar panel for power). Launch a satellite in orbit to relay transmitions between the lander and Earth to aim the telescope and relay results back to earth. We could then control the telescope remotely.

It probably couldn't be as large as the largest radio telescopes on Earth. However, it may not have to be that large because it doesn't have to cut through the radio interference from Earth sources.

Just a thought.

I don't buy it. Even assuming that television transmitters disappear, there's still a lot of additional radio transmissions. For example, what about all the 100,000 watt AM and FM radio stations? What about cell phone towers?

I don't know my physics for this, but would one million cell phones with one watt transmitters be equivalent to a 1 Megawatt TV tower for SETI purposes?

If anything, I think the amount of radio transmissions coming from earth have increased greatly in the last few years, with the increase in cell phone and wireless networking usage.

5) Message boards : Number crunching : Are credits being granted? (Message 15624)
Posted 19 Aug 2004 by Profile Kevin Lowey
Post:
Hiya,

I'm running Boinc for both Seti@home and Predictor@home (since Seti was down so much and my CPU was cooling off #8-)

I'm getting all my Predictor credits, but so far I have no pending credits and no assigned credits for SETI even thought I've processed a bunch of work units.

Also, when I try to examine my "pending credits" from the web site, it says something like "This feature has been temporarily disabled".

So, are credits being generated? Will I ever see those credits? Is there an estimate as to when credits will start being granted?

Thanks,
- Kevin Lowey

Just in case, I tried converting the image to png as well, but no go. Still no picture.

7) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Why isn't my image showing up in my profile? (Message 14585)

I tried adding an image to my profile. It is a jpeg image, height is 449 pixels (less than the 450 maximum mentioned). Size is about 17K (less than the 50K maximum mentioned). However, the picture never shows up in my profile. When I view the profile, it isn't there. When I return to the preferences screen, the input box for the image location is blank again.

Also, when editing the profile, it says we can use HTML. There's a link to a list of html tags we can use, which include the anchor and img tags. However, when I tried to use those tags, it stripped all the arguments out. I think that "help" link should be updated.

More information. I tried converting the file to PNG, still didn't work. I also tried using both Mozilla and MSIE as the browsers when specifying the picture file, still didn't work. I also resized the picture so it's height is a maximum of 200 pixels and the file size was only 4K, still didn't work.
