hi Rob,
something is confusing.

It would appear that you have only been running v8 on your CPU

that is 100% correct.
which will be considerably slower than running the same tasks on your ATI GPU.
I dont even have ATI on my computer.
I have a nvidia graphics card, but i dont set it up for GPU's.
my computer details even says NVIDIA GeForce 9200 (253MB)
i never had it set up for v7 either, didnt think it was needed for CPU.

when you used the "Lunatics" installer did you actually select the GPU applications

when i used the "Lunatics" installer i did not select any GPU settings.

As has been said before, and Bilbg has said, until you've had over 11 tasks validated on the current application the estimates are at best "wild guesses". The same figure applies to the GPU

I understand and have said this many times now, i understand they are only "estimates" and not "real time".

with all the information so far, im guessing V8 is more GPU than CPU.
which would explain the issues im having when im not set up for GPU's.

hi BilBg,

I dont know what it is exactly, i just know for me, right now,
seti version 8 seems screwed up compared to the way version 7 used to work for me.

I know something is not right if its taking 3 days to do 4 tasks.
cause thats how long it is taking, it never took me that long with seti 7.
i used to do 12 tasks in 3 days not 4.

but here is a question, i dont recall doing MB's (i assume thats mult-beam)
i may be wrong but i do not recall doing those in seti 7.
could that be an issue?
i dont know about these,

MB8_win_x86_SSE3_VS2008_r3330.exe
MB8_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATi_HD5_r3330.exe

the only file like that i found was MB8_win_x86_SSE2_VS2008_r3330
i dont have the other 2 you mentioned.

You can see the Real times are Not 15-18 h
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=4832843&offset=0&show_names=0&state=4&appid=29
what your system does and what mine does are not the same.
those ones are much less than what mine show.
i have 1 at 9,447.59 for runtime, but the other is 21,482.25 there was another one 22,599.28 that was still showing 2 hours left to complete on my end before i aborted it.

I use ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for years and never needed to exclude BOINC Data directory
I also don't remember any report from users involving ESET (as I have seen for many other Antiviruses)

i havent used ESET that long, maybe like 6 months,i figured it wouldnt hurt to exclude the boinc directory/files. i used to use Comodo AV before to and excluded it then also.

Hi rob,
ive seen a few posts regarding some AV issues, its understandable.
I dont think thats the issue in my case though.
but I have protected the boinc/seti files/folders.

I think the problem im having has to do with my boinc tasks v 1.69
which was for seti 7, i dont think its been updated for seti 8.
that would explain why 'boinc tasks' shows est. completion times over 19+
hours per task, and in normal boinc they are only like between 2 and 8 hours.

I think the fix to my issue is to downgrade to normal boinc & the lunatics app.
at least until boinc tasks is updated for seti 8.

As mentioned, i paused all AV software to reinstall BOINC, BOINC tasks and
the Lunatics application, (all most current)
i was able to get 6 new tasks (all show est completion of 19+ hours again)
and no that time does not go down (if anything, it extends longer than 19+ hrs until it finally completes)

running boinc tasks & boinc alone (no lunatics) time averages 7 hrs per task.
(not the 19+ as it does using lunatics application)
i have not tried modifying anything from the original installs.

(maybe there is something to edit in a different file to help this)

Hi rob,
im not sure about the antivirus, ive used the same one for for a while now,
ESET smart security, was using it when i was running seti v 7 without issue.

It looks to me as if it was looking for a module that has either been removed or corrupted

I dont know about that either because i downloaded and installed fresh from the respected websites downloads.
i did have recent trouble trying to install boinc & boinc tasks together.
boinc tasks did not recognize anything setup in boinc,
however after a few tries i got it to install and work that far.
but recently not able to get new tasks.

i will try another install of both without my ESET security running.
in case its blocking a module or something as you mentioned,
and see what happens.

Provided progress is being made at a sensible rate

thats just it, since ive updated to seti version 8,
for me anyway, progress has not been at a sensible rate.
version 7 seemed much better. (on my system)

since running version 8 ive only completed 2 seti 8 tasks.
but only after running them for a day and a half non-stop.
(thats why i made this post)

With seti 7 i could complete at least 6-8 tasks in that same time frame.
i dont know if it might be seti8 not liking my system.
or something with boinc, or with the Lunatics application.

i just know everything was working good until i updated to seti 8.
what went wrong... i have no clue but trying to find out.

Ok now that ive tried to install the new Lunatics application im back to
the previous issues again.
'cpu' tasks with est. completion times exceeding 19 to 20 hours each.
(i received 12 tasks which says 9 days to complete)
normally 12+ tasks would only show 3 days with seti v7 tasks

when i click properties for current running tasks each show its an average of
30MB to 40MB for work unit size, does this seem right ?

or am i once again getting a bunch of tasks that are 'bad'.

but then its odd everything seemed ok before adding the Lunatics application.
could Lunatics application be causing this?

Hi Richard,
yes i run the 'cpu tasks', i was using the Lunatics application before,
with seti 7, but when i started doing seti 8 tasks i did not realize
i had to update the Lunatics application also.

Since i learned the Lunatics application was not updated yet for seti 8
i thought i should do a fresh install of boinc, boinc tasks and seti 8.
without the Lunatics application and wait for them to release an update.

thanks for the help guys,
Not sure what happened, but after I installed boinc & boinc tasks again,
(without lunatics file) everything went simple & easy.
Downloaded 30+ new seti v8 wu's, all wu's show est. completion of 2 to 5 hours.
(like they should)(not the 12 to 19+ hours i was previously seeing)

all is good now thanks.

Thanks Ageless.
I read that post but did not see anything to help me,
i did see where it was referenced like you said though.

But reading that i stumbled on info about lunatics.
is lunatics working on a new enhanced client?
We're working on it, but it's not finished yet.

I believe thats probably why im seeing my issues.
(running boinc tasks without it)
i did run lunatics with everything before while running the version 7 wu's.

but this time i did a fresh install of boinc, boinc tasks and seti v8
without lunatics file.

I may need to go back to basic boinc & seti 8 until lunatics is done.
im just guessing.

hi Ageless,
that seems odd, version 8 seems smaller than version 7.
when i was running the version 7 wu's they worked very good on my system.
then when i updated to version 8 is when all this seemed to start.
ive only been at version 8 for about a week now and was only able to complete maybe 2 or 3 of the version 8 wu's i got so far, the rest were aborted.

so i dont have a clue if its my system, version 8 or the wu's.
i just know seti version 7 worked fine for me.

edit: i wonder if it has to do with the fact im also using boinc tasks
and not just boinc.

Hi Ageless,
thanks for the help.

What about any size differences between seti v7 wu's and seti v8 wu's.
Are there any differences ? or are both versions still generally the same.

hi Ageless,
yes the ones i felt i was having issues with were the aborted ones.
because they were taking much longer than they should have.

Im sorry, i dont understand how to tell if its a bad task or not.
you said
do know that your wingperson's computer took only 53 seconds to see this was a bad task

Sorry if this is a real noob question, but how do you tell its a bad task ?

Hi Ageless.
I understand the times are just estimates,
although i always found version 7's estimates were more accurate.

Made me curious when i seen one that says estimated 7 hrs and 23 hours later
it still says estimated 2 hours remaining for the same wu.

It does not seem right that a wu should take 2 days or more to complete.
especially when version 7's normally completed in less than 10 hours.

i dont know if its because of the size of the v8's wu's,
if its normal for seti v8 to take that long.
or if its a problem with my settings. (although settings were ok for v7)

hi everyone, i have version 8 running, i can download new wu's just fine,
but ive noticed the wrong est.time remaining on most that i get.
I am currently doing one that "did say" 7 hours when i first started the wu.
that was almost 24 hours ago, it still says like 2 hours 30 minutes left.
I have 4 other wu's that have est. time of over 19 hours each.
all the wu's i have are v8, i have not been seeing any v7 wu's.

Are all the v8 wu's that much larger than version 7's ?
is it true seti@home is phasing out version 7 all together?
(think i read that someplace here on the forums)

hi rob smith,

thank you very much, that fixed it, i'm running 2 tasks at a time again.
i had it set to 90% before (which seemed ok on older boinc)
but i assume the newer boinc needs it at 100%.
thanks.

Your account shows you as having three computers with basically the same spec - is this the case?

yes it is. they just have different ID #'s but same pc specs.

do i need to merge those or anything ?

I only have current 23 tasks im working on, but profile shows 31 in progress.
i am assuming the other 8 are "lost tasks" and unrecoverable.
id also assume id have to wait for those to go away. correct?

Hi OzzFan,

What venue is your host set to and what are the preferences for that venue?
i have no clue what your talking about.

i just know before reinstalling windows xp sp3, and updating to the newest BOINC (to get rid of the annoying update notice i was getting) all seemed fine.
and i was 2 CPU tasks at a time. (i've only been doing the SETI@home v7.
(no AstroPulse etc)

my CPU type: AuthenticAMD
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ [Family 15 Model 107 Stepping 2]
2 processors.

you should be able to see the details under my account.
its the same pc and all.

i know things have been a bit messy, when i had to format i had uncompleted tasks and now those are still showing in my account but i do not have them to complete them.

edit* i have noticed for some reason it shows me as having 3 computers ??
(under the Computers View from my name) no clue why, unless it changes the Computer ID whenever i install BOINC or boinc tasks. it puzzles me.

hi everyone,
recently i had to format my pc and reinstall boinc and boinc tasks.
when i ran seti@home before the install i was able to do 2 wu's at a time.
now for some reason i can only do 1 at a time.

nothing has changed as far as the pc that i use, its still a dual core cpu.
all thats changed was i updated boinc to the most recent version.
(unless that is what the problem is) i am not certain.

thanks for any help..
