I wonder if Yoon now regrets his decision to impose martial law.

Impeached South Korean president issued with arrest warrant over martial law.

A South Korean court has granted authorities approval to arrest President Yoon Suk Yeol after he was impeached and suspended from power for imposing martial law, marking the first time that a sitting president of the country has faced arrest.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) confirmed the Seoul Western District Court on Tuesday approved the warrant requested by investigators examining Mr Yoon's short-lived imposition of martial law.

Mr Yoon is facing investigation on allegations that he was the leader of an insurrection, one of the few criminal charges from which a South Korean president does not have immunity.

Under South Korean law, the leader of a rebellion can face the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted.

Separately, his trial on impeachment is being heard at the Constitutional Court.

The arrest warrant for an incumbent president is unprecedented, and deepens the political crisis that has engulfed South Korea.......

Justin falls on his sword.

Trudeau has announced his resignation in a bombshell press conference after suffering plummeting popularity within his party and among the public.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has quit in a bombshell press conference as his popularity plummets and incoming US President Donald Trump has threatened massive tariffs against its closest ally.

But it was the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland last month that sealed Mr Trudeau’s fate.

The leader of Canada’s Liberal Party (akin to Australia’s Labor) has been in office for just over nine years.

In the Canadian capital of Ottawa on Monday, local time, Mr Trudeau said he had a chance to “reflect over the holidays” before telling his family of his decision to resign over dinner on Sunday night.......

There have long been efforts in Greenland to achieve full sovereignty and independence from Denmark. So far, Greenland (no part of EU) has been heavily oriented towards Denmark in terms of finances, culture, education and transport links, and is partly dependent on it. This was also the case in Iceland until WWII. At that time, there was a clear reason for the British occupation of Iceland which led to its subsequent independence from Denmark. Such an excuse is now missing for Greenland.

So, (1) either Putin drastically enlarges Russia's Northern Fleet and credibly threatens to occupy large coastal sections of Greenland or...

(2) financially strong US investors promote, finance and advise a comprehensive independence movement in Greenland together with a long-term viable economic plan for this island. A globally effective media campaign would help to convince the world public.

I think (1) is more likely than (2) to achieve or enforce Greenland's separation from Denmark.

But who knows... according to the Monroe Doctrine, Denmark is an anachronistic European colonial power which still oppresses and exploits a dependent nation on the American continent, interferes in 'American political affairs', like the Spaniards before... Isn't it? As with Spanish Puerto Rico..., why should Greenland (not threatened by costly hurricanes) not become an integral part of the US too?

If the right people explain Trump the situation with Greenland appropriately; with a masterfully constructed spin.... a good deal in sight - everything is imaginable.

But beware of betrayed, angry Vikings! The Icelandic Coast Guard once achieved victory against the mighty Royal Navy in the three Cod Wars. Our own mighty Prussian kings of the past and even Imperial German power of the 19th century never dared to challenge Danish naval power or Danish islands. Instead our Emperor waged a land war to conquer Danish possessions and afterwards spent a fortune to dig a wide canal there for sea-going ships (Kiel canal) connecting our North Sea harbors with the Baltic Sea ones to avoid these imponderable Viking waters of the Skagerrak and Kattegat around Danish Jutland.

The Old one dates from 1660 CE, the New one is from 2025.
This coat of arms even dates back centuries further in medieval times, but the depicted old one is Queen Margrethe II coat of arms from 1972. But sure, the polar bear in question for Greenland can be traced back for at least 200 years.

The continuing Yoon saga.

South Korean anti-corruption agency receives new arrest warrant to detain impeached President Yoon.

A South Korean court has re-issued a warrant to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, the country's corruption investigation agency says.

However, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials has not confirmed how long the warrant would remain valid.

Investigators were unable to execute the original arrest warrant for Mr Yoon.

Police were blocked by a human chain of hundreds of presidential security service and military guards outside his residence last week, said earlier on Tuesday they remained determined to bring him in.

Mr Yoon's lawyers filed an injunction request to a Seoul court to nullify the arrest warrant, but the court struck that down on Sunday, a court official said on Tuesday.........

Yoon has been snagged.

Impeached South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested over his failed bid to impose martial law in the country last month.

Impeached South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested over his failed bid to impose martial law, hours after hundreds of investigators and police raided his residence.

Mr Yoon, who faces charges of insurrection, had resisted arrest since his imposition of martial law plunged the country into its worst political crisis in decades in December.

At the time, Mr Yoon directed soldiers to storm parliament in an unsuccessful attempt to stop lawmakers voting down his move.

On Wednesday, Mr Yoon left his heavily-fortified residence in central Seoul – where he had been held up for weeks – travelling in a convoy to the offices of the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) after investigators and police said they executed the arrest warrant......

Well it's not just us here down under that have to worry.

‘Dark momentum’: Experts sound grim warning over global threats facing Australia in 2025.

2024 was a year full of surprises. 2025 will be one of worries.

Ukraine has turned the tables on Russia, surging its troops over the border and into the Kursk region. And yet, its troops are gradually being ground back elsewhere.

Israel has all but flattened Gaza and large parts of Lebanon. And yet, there is still no plan for a lasting peace between the diaspora and Nakba.

Dictator Bashar al-Assad has been forced to abandon Syria. And yet, the Islamic State and Iranian-backed terror organisations still lurk in its deserts.

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested after declaring martial law to bypass parliament. And yet, North Korea’s Kim Jong-un is in his most powerful position yet.

Then there’s Ukraine. The South China Sea. And Greenland.

To Australia, the world’s trouble spots all seem so far away. And yet, its future is almost entirely dependent upon what happens there.

And that is deteriorating. Fast.......

Why UK gas storage levels are 'concerningly low'

Plunging temperatures in recent weeks and the end of Russian gas deliveries via Ukraine have hurt gas inventories in the United Kingdom, the country's main gas supplier Centrica said on January 10, warning that gas supplies were now "concerningly low."

On Saturday, the UK's gas storage facilities were just 42% full, [...]

By comparison, Germany's gas storage facilities were nearly three-quarters full, while Poland's were still more than 80% full.

The GIE data showed Britain has the smallest amount of gas held in reserve out of the 20 European countries listed.

[...] The UK has much less gas storage capacity than other European countries — about 3.2 billion cubic meters (bcm), seven times less than Germany and five times less than the Netherlands.

Britain's storage facilities can hold enough gas for 12 average days or just over a week during winter, while Germany has enough for 89 days.

The Rough facility used to account for 70% of the UK's gas storage capacity but was closed in 2017 due to safety concerns and high maintenance costs.

The Conservative government of then-Prime Minister Theresa May had refused to subsidize an upgrading plan. However, after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, sparking an energy crisis throughout Europe, the government pressed Rough's owner, Centrica, to reopen the facility.

When operations did resume, they were at about 20% of their previous capacity [...]
Article from Jan 16. Latest storage levels (Jan 19): just 34%.

On the day that you remind us of that, 'The Guardian' brings the story up to date.

Centrica may close UK’s largest gas storage site. Is the energy system really ready?

... Centrica, having partly reopened the large Rough storage facility off the Yorkshire coast as recently as 2022, is already suggesting it may close it again.

One reaction to such warnings-cum-threats is to say Centrica is engaged in self-interested lobbying in search of its long-desired long-term deal with the government that would also cover eventual conversion of Rough to store hydrogen, the coming energy source (possibly) for the UK’s industrial plants in the 2030s.
...

But then there’s the second point: the real issue, they say, is whether the UK needs an expanded Rough as a strategic gas reserve, or a form of insurance against future geopolitical and supply shocks. On that score, even many advocates of maximum wind and solar, as soon as possible, would agree that the case for storing more gas is strong because the backup system has to be secure.

Then there are these rusty shadow fleet ships everywhere which lately experienced lots of problems with anchors accidentally falling down, unnoticed by the captain. I don't know about all these gas pipelines in the North Sea... But the Baltic Sea ones aren't secured.

The smaller ones are at risk from ship anchors. The larger ones (with a thick concrete shell to add weight) may are resistant against anchors but can't withstand these adventurous Ukrainian sailing yacht skippers that roam the seas with scuba divers, eager to play with explosive* charges.

* Our public broadcasters claim the "North Stream" blowup event south of Sweden was caused by Ukrainian scuba divers operating from a 50ft long chartered sailing yacht, after the journalists tirelessly checked the evidence in a vast collaborative international investigation.

Well there's 1 thing positive about those Yank car companies pulling out of making cars here and Elon's EV's taking up valuable parking space where ever they can find it with other car manufacturers also starting to do the same, but not just with EV's.

It could be a great year to buy a car in Australia, with prices expected to plummet due to several crucial factors.

2025 looks set to be a great year to buy a car – but don’t expect a good trade-in price on your last set of wheels.

Experts are predicting this year will be a buyers’ market as Australia battles with an oversupply of used cars.

The last couple of months show demand for used cars continues to cool compared to the peaks seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data compiled by Auto Grab and published by the Australian Automotive Dealers Association (AADA) shows used car sales have continuously fallen for four months.

In December, there was a total of 322,532 active listings, a drop of 3.8 per cent on November 2024.

However, out of the 322,532 active listings only 181,724 cars turned into sales, equating to a 56.3 per cent sell-through rate.

“Average days to sell have increased to 48.7, the highest since October, suggests that sellers are dealing with slower moving stock,” AADA chief executive James Voortman said.

“This trend is expected to continue in 2025 as the growing oversupply of new vehicles creates a spillover effect into the used car market,”.......
I'll just stick with my old mile devouring Falcons thanks.

Mississippi of course; "The bill, dubbed the Contraception Begins at Erection Act, was introduced by state Sen. Bradford Blackmon on Monday."
"The first penalty would be $1,000, the second one would be $5,000, and a fine of $10,000 would be imposed for third or subsequent offenses. "

Baltic undersea cable likely damaged by external force, Latvia says

An undersea fiber optic cable between Latvia and Sweden was damaged on Sunday [Jan 26], likely as a result of external influence, Latvia said, triggering an investigation by local and NATO maritime forces in the Baltic Sea.

The cable that broke on Sunday linked the Latvian town of Ventspils with Sweden’s Gotland island, and was damaged in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone, the Latvian navy said.

A spokesperson for the operator said the cable, laid at depths of more than 50 metres (164 ft), was damaged on early Sunday but declined to give an exact time of the incident.

Unlike seabed gas pipelines and power cables, which can take many months to repair after damage, fiber optic cables that have suffered damage in the Baltic Sea have generally been restored within weeks.

The suspected ship "Vezhen" (Maltese flag; Bulgarian carrier) has a damaged anchor; one arm is visibly missing.
