And yet I remember a BBC TV documentary by, I think, David Olusoga, about the reparations paid by the British state after the abolition of slavery in "the Colonies".

He found, and showed, the ledgers kept by the forerunners of the Civil Service, listing the 40,000 slave owners and the numbers of slaves they were claiming for. Plantation owners, of course, but also many small claims from, for example, widows of slave owners who had relocated back to the UK with their domestic slaves.

The other claimed fact that shocked me was the suggestion that much of the industrial revolution, and in particular the growth of the railways, was funded by the slavery compensation payments. Our history isn't as clean as we like to think it is.

I can't understand why these things were named after traitors in the first place.
