I disagree their is a vast array of new radio telescopes being built like the Chinese Space Very Long Baseline Interferometry. https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3172634/chinese-satellite-set-create-radio-telescope-30-times-size-earth #witch begs the questions: will SETI@HOME be leasing time on those new arrays? #does the donate section of the page still work? #can the SETI@HOME project be bought by another university? #how much money do they need? the point is that I feel strongly enough about it to keep trying. just think of all the vast contributions to technology and science that came from the SETI@HOME project, although their may be little direct profit from the projects intended product (the detection of extraterrestrial intelligence ), its research has lead to many other important scientific and technological advances. Its my opinion that the decline of the SETI@HOME project is an example of universities and research institutions taking their eye of the ball. |

Ending SETI@HOME was a mistake that has lost engagement, and with that, undoubtedly donations/funding. I strongly urge for the program to be reinstated for these critical reasons. |

I would like to think that at some point Seti@home comes back in some form. I've been a member soince 30 March 2002 and had 376,401 credit...not a lot as some. When I got my new computer I was looking forward to running Seti@home on it: i7-10700K CPU @ 3.80GHz 3.79 GHz 32.0 GB Nvidea 2080 Super I'm still hopefull.... |

Ending SETI@HOME was a mistake that has lost engagement, and with that, undoubtedly donations/funding. It is probably just as well we don’t know what happened to the donated funds. Remember this is in California. It would not surprise me to find out that when the SETI program was curtailed, some upper echelon administrators claimed all previous allocated funds beyond what would be needed for the winding down, including donated funds. It also would not surprise me to find they were reallocated to a senior administrator’s pet liberal arts program. As I recall from making a donation years ago, the actual donations went to the University first so they probably feel justified to use donated funds in any manner they wish as long as it is related to the University as a whole. All conjecture on my part for sure, and it would nice if I was wrong, but I think the odds favor such a scenario. |

For the recent years, Berkeley s@h was running on donated hardware, and sponsorship for such as internet services. Not sure how they financed their use of physical space in a datacentre when they finally got kicked out of their old overwhelmed closet. (A janitor/beancounter wanted the broom closet back?...) The people keeping the project running have been doing so out of their own private dedication and personal 'free' time. There's various photos somewhere on the site showing off where whichever donated funds went to for each funding drive for whatever hardware. More recently, the ATLAS compute cluster people at CERN have kindly donated space and time and power for free to support processing the huge database of detections that we have found. That has enabled filtering those trillions down to a manageable candidates list. See the Nebula postings for the story of that epic adventure that is progressing. (The database proved to be far too huge by far for Dr A's home laptop!!!) Keep searchin',!
