I still can't help but wonder what it is that the Ukraine has that Putin so desperately wants, or is it just the need to be the big bully on the block. He is ruining Russia's economic condition including his own and all his cronies.

Warm weather naval bases is a possibility.

Yes, there's a lot of old strategic U.S.S.R. infrastructure still left in the Ukraine.

Including the Woodpecker up near the infamous Chernobyl nuclear power complex.

But why? Can he not see that life in Russia and all of eastern europe has improved greatly since the fall of the U.S.S.R. His style of government is no longer relevant. If he is so power hungry then I hope that those who can remove him from leadership will do so very soon.

There are also "rumors" floating about that he isn't as well as he makes out so he just wants to make his mark in history (or try to) by returning the old U.S.S.R. back to what it was before he passes away.

The history of the links between Russia and the Ukraine go back a long way. All the way to the Viking era, when mainly Swedish vikings used the rivers to transport goods to and from Constantinople. Because they got ambushed by the local tribes these vikings set up defended bases along the river and these people were known as the Russ, Swedish Viking for rower. The largest and strongest of these bases was at Kyiv and became the capitol of the Russ(ians).

Over time and because of invasions and wars, Kyiv lost its dominant position and the Duchy of Moscow became the capitol of the Russians. And what today is Ukraine was divided between several of the neighbouring countries, such as Poland, when they were the dominant regional power until Russia took over the whole region. Ukraine did not become a separate country until 1991.

Because of all this history today's Russians have a belief that Kyiv , because it was their first capitol, should be theirs.

Also, his past incursions into Georgia and Ukraine helped to drive previous Soviet states to NATO. Ukraine, although not perfect, is a democracy with very western values, and they are sitting on his doorstep. There is only so much Russia can do to hide that fact from the Russian people. I am guessing that in Putin's mind, he can't allow a free and democratic Ukraine to exist on his border, or risk losing both his power, and/or the end of Russia as it is today. On the other hand, his war in Ukraine now has almost cemented his own downfall. Some of what he wanted was to keep the fragmentation of NATO which Trump had a huge hand in, to continue. The reverse is what happened, and NATO is more unified now than it has been in a long time. As always, there are no quick and easy answers to this very complex, dynamic situation.

I think that attacking a nuclear power plant should be the straw that breaks the camel's back as far as direct intervention by NATO or some other coalition is concerned. Such an attack can have serious ramifications for all of europe. This is more proof that a madman is in charge of the second most powerful nation on earth. And just when I thought it was safe to go to bed at night.
