Diesel-electrics are 30-35% efficient, electrics-by-wire about 95%. The big issue is electric resistance. Rail is steel for strength. Wire is copper for conductance. Getting the power out along the many thousands of miles of rail is an issue. Do you want more California style wildfire power lines? Oh and then power plants, some bright guy will just park the existing diesel electric generators (locomotives) to power the whole thing. Consider with PSR there may be 10 power units on the consist at 2.5MW each, that's a lot of electricity that has to be delivered to some very remote places, especially with double track main lines. Now factor in how many trains moving at one time, some educated guesses on the web say 5000 for the USA. So 5000 * 25 MW = 125000MW. Typical Nuke plant = 500 MW = 250 brand new Nuke plants. Even if off by a factor of 10, could the existing Texas power grid supply it? Oh and that brings up the grid itself and electric phase angle, as RR track goes everywhere the grid which is now in sections would have be synchronized nationally. Enron. I can hear bolts being undone as the battery is automatically removed from underneath the vehicle and replaced with a fully- charged one. In less than five minutes, I'm ready to go again.
