Message 2091526 - Posted: 5 Jan 2022, 21:25:38 UTC - in response to Message 2091512.

OK, I've now suffered enough range anxiety for January, and probably the rest of the year.....
The leaf took 16 hours to get its 42kW battery charged, and consumed 47kW in doing so. Obviously there are losses in charging any battery so that's not too bad.
Now comes the circular trip, 107 miles of mixed roads and traffic. According to the advertising range that should have been easy-peasy... Set of from home with a theoretical range of 168 miles and travelled the 1 mile to the highway, range has now dropped to 159 miles - a portent of things to come? The first 40 odd miles were fairly clear of traffic and I held a steady 65mph (indicated), at the end of this section the range was down to 100 miles remaining. Now came the twisty back rods bit, and the range fell by about 1.5 miles for every mile covered for the next forty miles - this is going to be tight.... final 20 odd miles, and the range was falling like a brick, ended up at 3 miles left after the 107 mile trip......
Phoned the garage to say they can collect the car as soon as they like. They can't do it until Monday.... Was transferred to the salesman I spoke to when arranging this loan, the conversation went along the lines "When do you want to take delivery Sir?", "Never, or at least until you can get the real world range to over 200 miles" "Oh, it's range is 170 miles" "Like heck, I've just flattened the battery on a fairly typical 100 mile trip" "I'll get the sales manager to phone you back" "Don't waste his time, the Nissan Leaf falls well short of what I need in a car and has dropped off my shopping list" "Why" "I just old you, the real world range is a long way bellow the advertising world range, so I'm not in the least bit interested in in".

This is what I was afraid of. Overly optimistic reporting by media people who want to get rid of petro fueled vehicles to the point that they will exaggerate every feature of electric vehicles.. Like they don't tell you things such as cold weather heavily impact range and the colder the worse the range gets. No one mentions the cost of a replacement battery pack and that rapid recharging shortens the life of the batteries. There are many issues that are being either totally ignored or at least heavily downplayed. I am fairly sure that all electric personal vehicles will not be readily available in what is left of my lifetime.

Back in '73 going from Compton to Long Beach around 6AM. My Eyes were stinging/watering and Breathing Air was Yucky.
Traffic on Freeway was Bumper to Bumper at a GOoD Pace. Might have been Speed Limit.

Yes. Air was HORRID.

I Bet Today, the Same Trip at Same Time with Equal Conditions, The Air is Sweet as Sweet can Be.

Meaning; We Don't Need No Electric Vehicles for Air Quality. People Want Them for Some Other Reason -
GO FOR IT.

It Will Be FUN to Watch.

I think you are hitting the nail on the head. Much of today's media are either too lazy, or too incapable, or both, to do real-world tests of new cars. These so-called motoring journalists get flown off to some exotic location where they are wined and dined then given a quick trip round the area in a nice new car, then return to more wining and dining. Gone are the days when they would have a car for days if not weeks, trash it mercilessly round a track for a day and at the end of this abuse write the report, including the fuel consumption for various aspects of the test.

You want reporters doing statistical analysis (n = 1) rather than statisticians?

Electric Motors are Incredible. Gearboxes connected to Electric Motors are Incredible.

Most Gas-Powered Cars are Masterworks of Technology.

An Electric Vehicle is a Masterwork of Technology.

Batteries for Electric Vehicles are NOT Up to Task.

Batteries Up to Task would be ASTRONOMICAL in Cost.

There are Gas-Powered Cars with Mega Hundreds of Thousand Miles on Them. Still start and Engines Purring Like a Mo Fo.

Like My Once Owned Datsun 1980 280ZX.

Few MINUTES Pumpin' in da Gas and 600+ Miles before Next Fill-Up. I've gotten 700+ Miles from Fill-UPs

Let me Know when and Electric Car Will Do This.

Replacing Batteries Every 8-10-12 Years for 20 THOUSAND Plus. C'mon Man. Recharges Getting One Hardly Anywhere and Then a
LENGTHY Charge-Up.

I could Go Across U S of A with 5 Fill-Ups with Many a Gas-Powered Car.

C'mon Man

Am quite unaware of a large percentage purchasing cars on the basis of journalism, good journalism or otherwise.

Electric Vehicles HAVE NO ANSWER to Transportation Needs of U S of A.

Electric Vehicles are Great. For Going from Point A to B. Then WAIT aka Charge aka ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Time. Repeat Repeat Repeat and Then Weeks Later One Might Make It to Z.

GAS Gets One from A to Z. QUICK and EASY Like

Electric Vehicles in action:

Does the Tesla Tunnel make sense?? Angry checks out Elon Musk's LVCC System!

That looks to be a good win for the very low infrastructure costs and as an actually useful demo.

How will that get developed further?

Check out what "Thunderfoot" on YouTube has to say about Musk's various ideas. What points of agreement do we have with his assessments? Disagreements?

The first electric vehicle cross country (USA) has already been run. I watched the video a couple of weeks ago. As I recall it took 10 days with nightly stopovers to totally recharge the batteries. It was called charge across America. They used a variety of EVs from several manufacturers. I think the VW won but I'm not sure.

The EV battery problem:

Lithium batteries' big unanswered question

Another case of hand waving and "make it so" by well intentioned id10t's, who refuse to go with the only answer that works, population reduction.

Another EV problem, to my mind, is will people be forced to trade in their car once the Li batteries are shot and can no longer be charged since the cost of the batteries are a significant portion of the overall cost of the car. Also I agree with you Gary, the real problem facing the world is over population.

The age of the battery is probably going to affect the 2nd owner not the person that originally bought the car. According to https://www.statista.com/statistics/581017/average-length-of-vehicle-ownership-in-the-united-states-by-vehicle-type/, on average, a new car is changed after 79 months, which is below the often quoted 10 year battery life.

The car manufacturers estimate the average electric car will be charged twice a week, so about 1000 charge/discharge cycles in 10 years.
There have been stories that the electric companies would like electric car owner to keep their cars plugged in so the battery can be used for energy storage, to be used when green energy is in short supply.
Are those energy companies going to pay the $10 dollars each discharge/charge costs you? *

*N.B. The UK has less than 40 minutes storage capacity for green energy generation.
