BOINC update broke?

After a fortnight of not being able to upload or download any Collatz work, which is my other Boinc project, due to messages about the servers beng off-line, I had a root around. It seemed that an out of date certificate was the cause of the problem. But I wasn't prepared to muck around with editing files etc. Then I read about the new Boinc 7.16.20 whereas I was running 7.16.11. I went on the Boinc home page and downloaded the new version, no mention of Alpha or Beta, and the moment that I ran it Collatz was back on line. Normally my computers get a message saying there is a new version, this time they didn't. Also the search for new version says there isn't one. Well there bloody well is, because I downloaded it and am running it!! It's the 64 bit version released 17th October. Is Boinc update broke? |

I don't remember any automatic BOINC update. All I remember was a notification that a new version is available. The notification is not automatic. It has to be generated by some admin type. Probably David Anderson. He hasn't done so yet. Only the one post from him in the News forum on the BOINC site announcing 7.16.20 is available in the download directory and then later in the normal Download page. All I remember was a notification that a new version is available. That is what I meant. Thanks Keith, confirms what I thought. DA again. |

Indeed. The biggest current failure is David Anderson's inability to communicate with the volunteers who adopted his original BOINC platform. Late last night (UTC) he sent this email direct to all Science United users: Dear Science United user:I've now reproduced that email on the BOINC Projects mailing list - which is a place where it should have circulated in the first place. |

On September 30 all my QuChemPedAI@home tasks on a Windows 10 PC failed to upload. No new task was downloaded. I was advised by devs of LHC@home to download a file ca-bundle but I had already it installed. Nothing happened until today and 12 QuChem tasks went past their deadline. Today I got a mail from Dave Anderson asking me to install the new BOINC 7.16.20. I did it and QuChem restarted. Other projects such as WCG, Rosetta@home. Einstein@home and LHC@home had not been affected by a security certificate problem like QuChem. Tullio |

To be fair, DA is a busy man. But wouldn't it make sense to delegate such a simple task to someone in his team that could be relied upon? |

But wouldn't it make sense to delegate such a simple task to someone in his team that could be relied upon?I'd like to hear something about what he's busy with - he very rarely communicates anything in public about either BOINC or Science United these days. And it has taken almost three weeks for him to do something he did in two days flat, last time it happened (end May 2020). I'm also concerned that we we've seen no sign (in public, at least) of any succession planning, or any new trainees being trained in the skills necessary. I'm a pensioner, fully retired for four years now. And I think I'm about three years older than David. Employment practices will vary greatly between the UK and the USA, but I'd be surprised if the subject of retirement hadn't at least crossed his mind by now. Succession shouldn't come as a surprise, either to David or to the University of California. And I would like to think it wouldn't come as a surprise to BOINC, either. |

I do wonder if the good Drs are keeping Boinc supported out of their own pockets and 'free' time... so it seems some time of corrupt data going on from this to a simple hello to server on multi projects.
