Meanwhile... In the real world, no surprises:

Covid cases rise as one in 37 has virus in UK
wrote:
... it was "particularly worrying" that the number of infected older people was rising "because they are the age group that are likely to get severe Covid and go to hospital."

She said people over 50 should be encouraged to get their boosters to protect them and help prevent them ending up in hospital, but also to protect the NHS from pressures that are likely to get worse over the winter...

One in 20 suffer long-term Covid effects...
wrote:
... those who were vaccinated before becoming unwell appeared to be protected from some long-term symptoms.

The most reported symptoms included breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations, and confusion or "brain fog"...

... Long Covid was more likely in those with pre-existing physical and mental health problems, such as a respiratory disease or depression...

Reading elsewhere, I've seen figures quoted from 1-in-10 to 1-in-20 for "Long Covid" depending on area and for how persisting symptoms are listed.

Note also that over half the population already have pre-existing health problems!

Meanwhile for just one consequence:

Fewer ops being done as NHS waiting list hits seven million
wrote:
... analysis shows the rise is being driven by the inability of hospitals to get back to full strength rather than lots more demand.

Hospitals are carrying out 12% fewer operations and treatments than they were before the pandemic.

Surgeons said it was really frustrating as operating theatres were not being used due to a lack of beds and staff...

... "Without treatment, the health of patients can deteriorate.

"Not only do we need to get back to where we were before the pandemic, we need to do more if we are going to tackle the backlog."...

... The struggle to return services to full strength is why the backlog is growing, because the number of new referrals for treatment has not actually gone up above its average before the start of the pandemic...

Public responds to NHS amber alert over donor blood stocks
wrote:
The blood-donation service has been inundated with offers of help after putting out an alert, on Wednesday, warning NHS stocks were running critically low in England...

... The NHS usually has six days' worth of blood to use for operations and transfusions but levels are currently due to fall below two...

... Blood supplies have been challenging since the Covid pandemic, because of staff shortages and sickness, and a change in people's behaviour...

... "This is an amazing response from the public and we have been reminded in the last 24 hours of the incredible goodwill and spirit of the public towards helping patients in times of great difficulty,"...

When do we rescue our health service?

A recall on E. coli concerns hit Aldi stores in Florida, Texas and 34 other states.

..The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli infections linked to Earth Grown frozen falafel sold at Aldi stores — including two in Florida.

The FDA’s recall alert listed state counts but not store locations.

There have been 20 illnesses and five hospitalizations related to the consumption of the Earth Grown falafel brand purchased as of Oct. 7, according to the notice. The last illness was reported on Sept. 23.

Based on epidemiological information provided by CDC and interviews conducted by state and local public health officials, of 18 people interviewed, 15 reported shopping at Aldi stores. Among these 15 people who reported shopping at the Aldis, six reported eating Earth Grown brand frozen falafel that they bought at Aldi in the week before they got sick.

On Oct. 6, Cuisine Innovations, the manufacturer of Earth Grown frozen falafel, voluntarily recalled its packages. Recalled products include Earth Grown vegan traditional falafel and garlic and herb falafel distributed and sold exclusively by Aldi.

The stores pulled Earth Grown frozen falafel from its shelves, according to the FDA...

You might be one of those that were given the anti-magnet version, you'll know if you suddenly find yourself being propelled backwards out of a door with neither mechanical or human interaction.

Covid?! That's a nothing in the scheme of things...

Strangely enough... (Or not...)

See:

Eating well and avoiding the news gave the best mental health outcomes during COVID

Good exercise helps also.

This is looking starkly worrying:

Respiratory illness may take up half of NHS beds this winter
wrote:
... half of all hospitals beds in England could be occupied by patients with respiratory infections, including Covid and flu, NHS England says.

The warning came as NHS bosses set out further details of its plans to help the health service cope this winter.

This includes rapid response teams to help people who have fallen at home and "data war rooms"...

... The return of normal winter viruses along with Covid will place huge strain on hospitals...

... Areas such as London and Hull have set up systems whereby teams including non-paramedics such as firefighters attend to patients...

Something is going very badly wrong...

Don't look up?...

PooTin and no energy to heat cold fresh air, hence you have to recycle the hot but dirty air.

PooTin and no energy to heat cold fresh air, hence you have to recycle the hot but dirty air.

That needn't be so... Only for the sake of aircon systems that are too cheap and dumb and lax decrepit regulations that permit aircon and buildings to be a very profitable con...

Aircon is not even needed for good efficient ventilation. We have various "Energy Recovery Ventilation" systems that heat the incoming air with the heat from the expelled dirty air...

There are some rather stark parallels:

Black Death 700 years ago affects your health now
wrote:
... Up to half of people died when the Black Death swept through Europe in the mid-1300s.

A pioneering study analysing the DNA of centuries-old skeletons found mutations that helped people survive the plague.

But those same mutations are linked to auto-immune diseases afflicting people today...

Note that each new wave of covid variant is successful precisely because it subverts our immune systems...

This is because it's bi-valent, so the two opposing magnetic poles cancel each other. ;^)

Indeed so... But that's for another thread...

Meanwhile, just to note that the "Energy Recovery Ventilation" systems are much lower cost to install and run than the much more complicated and expensive Aircon units, and yet can recover up to 80% of heating/cooling to fully keep a domestic sized room well ventilated for a mere 6 Watts of fan power. All too good not to do!

... Except there are no health or building regulations requiring such good health for business spaces let alone residential...

And so it begins, early:

Flu comes early in England, with hospital cases rising
wrote:
Cases of flu have climbed quickly in the past week in England, suggesting the season has begun earlier than normal, say officials.

People may have little immunity to flu after a break from the disease during Covid pandemic restrictions.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says hospital and ICU admissions for the respiratory disease are rising the fastest in children under five. Hospital rates are going up among the elderly too...

... health experts are urging anyone who is eligible for a flu shot to get one.

Many southern hemisphere nations have just had their most rampant influenza season for years and officials have been warning that the UK must prepare for a big, early wave of flu too...
