The symptoms and causes of monkeypox infections, which CDC calls an 'emerging issue'.

New cases of monkeypox were reported in the U.K., Spain, Portugal, Italy and the U.S. this week, a rare occurrence for a virus largely confined to central and western Africa.

The U.S. reported its first monkeypox case of the year on Wednesday: a man in Massachusetts. New York City's health department said on Thursday that it is investigating a possible case as well. In the U.K., nine cases have been detected since the beginning of May. As of Thursday, Italy has confirmed one recent case, Portugal has confirmed 14, and Spain seven, along with 22 suspected cases. France reported a suspected case on Thursday too.....

NSW Health identifies ‘probable’ case of monkeypox in Sydney

A Sydney man aged in his 40s is suspected of having the monkeypox virus.

NSW Health identified the “probable case”, saying the man had recently returned to Sydney from Europe.

He developed a mild illness several days after arriving home, then went to his GP with symptoms clinically compatible with monkeypox.

Urgent testing identified a probable case of monkeypox, with confirmatory testing underway.

New York also has a case.

New York City investigating possible monkeypox case

Health officials in New York City are investigating a possible case of monkeypox, the city's New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Thursday.

The patient is being cared for at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, according to health officials. The department said preliminary tests will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) if they come out positive.

This is a very sad situation for the people of North Korea as they struggle to cope with the reality of Covid in their country.
Being such a tightly closed country I feel it is realisation of the severity of the situation that has prompted the leadership to be more open than they have been for the last couple of years.

CDC monitors 6 people in US for possible rare monkeypox, says public 'should not be concerned'

Officials at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are closely tracking recent clusters of monkeypox infections around the world -- and possible cases in the United States.
Currently, the CDC is monitoring six people in the United States for possible monkeypox infections after they sat near an infected traveler who had symptoms while on a flight from Nigeria to the United Kingdom in early May.

Separately, CDC officials also are investigating a case of monkeypox confirmed in a man in Massachusetts who had recently traveled to Canada. And in New York City, one patient has tested positive for orthopoxvirus, the family of viruses to which monkeypox belongs, NYC health officials announced in a news release Friday.

Monkeypox: 80 cases confirmed in 12 countries

More than 80 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in at least 12 countries.

The World Health Organization has said another 50 suspected cases are being investigated - without naming any countries - and warned that more cases are likely to be reported.

Infections have been confirmed in nine European countries, as well as the US, Canada and Australia.

Monkeypox is most common in remote parts of Central and West Africa.

It is a rare viral infection which is usually mild and from which most people recover in a few weeks, according to the UK's National Health Service.

The virus does not spread easily between people and the risk to the wider public is said to be very low.

There is no specific vaccine for monkeypox, but a smallpox jab offers 85% protection since the two viruses are quite similar.

According to news in the Telegraph most of these cases of Monkey Pox are linked to the gay and gay fetish communities.
Monkeypox cases in Spain have been linked to a superspreader event at an adult sauna in Madrid.
Enrique Ruiz Escudero, the region’s cabinet minister for health of the community, said on Friday that health officials had traced many of Spain’s 30 monkeypox cases to a single sauna in the capital.

Britain’s monkeypox tally now stands at 20 after 11 fresh cases were announced on Friday, and contact tracing and quarantine of close contacts is under way.
A “notable proportion” of the UK and European cases are in gay and bisexual men, health officials have said.

Three cases in Belgium have also been linked to a large-scale fetish festival in Antwerp, according to organisers. The Darklands Festival warned people who attended four days of parties, starting on May 5, that authorities had linked the event to the country’s three confirmed cases.

I saw an article some years ago that alleged that the air quality in planes had decreased after smoking was banned.
They decreased the fresh air flow because they didn't need to get rid of the bad smell.

FDA, CDC investigate salmonella outbreak connected to Jif peanut butter products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Friday that it is conducting an investigation into a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to Jif peanut butter products.

The FDA has partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and various state and local agencies to investigate foods produced at a J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Ky.

The facility is “likely” the origin point of the Salmonella Senftenberg infections that broke out among five people, all of whom said they ingested peanut butter prior to falling ill, the FDA said, citing the CDC.

Four of the five people specifically said they ingested Jif brand peanut butter before they fell ill, according to the agency.

“FDA conducted Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) analysis on an environmental sample collected at the Lexington, KY, J.M. Smucker Company facility in 2010. The analysis shows that this 2010 environmental sample matches the strain causing illnesses in this current outbreak,” said the FDA in a statement.

The J.M. Smucker Company voluntarily recalled a number of Jif peanut butter products that have been distributed around the U.S. Friday, warning consumers that “Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

The company announced Saturday that it would also voluntarily recall several of its products sold in Canada due to potential contamination.

It's not an air born disease, it's a skin to skin contact 1, and when you're on an airplane it's pretty hard not to rub elbows with others and this is where the transmission is happening.

Masks will not help you against this 1. ;-)

Monkeypox is a 'concern for everybody' and US is looking into treatments and vaccines, says President Joe Biden

The World Health Organisation has identified about 80 monkeypox cases globally, and roughly 50 more suspected cases - with a leading doctor telling Sky News the UK is facing a 'significant rise' over the next week.

Monkeypox is something "everybody should be concerned about" and the US is looking into what kind of treatments and vaccines are available, President Joe Biden has said.

The World Health Organisation has identified about 80 monkeypox cases globally, and roughly 50 more suspected cases.

Cases of the smallpox-related disease have previously been seen only among people with links to central and West Africa.

Sierra Leone finds three human cases of anthrax

Sierra Leone's health authorities have confirmed that three people have been infected with anthrax, a rare but deadly bacterial disease.

The three were being treated as outpatients in hospital and were in a stable condition, a statement said.

Anthrax is considered to be primarily a zoonotic disease, meaning that humans usually pick it up from infected animals. It is not an airborne illness like the flu.

Victims are usually people who work closely with animals.

On Sunday, the agriculture ministry confirmed an outbreak among animals in the north-west of the country, with more than 200 dying. It was the first such outbreak for three decades.

Anthrax can cause severe illness and be fatal for humans if not treated, but usually it does not spread easily.

Sierra Leone's Emergency Operation Centre is closely monitoring the situation and increasing public awareness. The World Health Organization has been notified.

Anthrax is caused by bacillus anthracis. It largely survives as spores that hide away in soil for years before entering an animal through a cut or wound.

Anthrax can be treated with antibiotics but treatment needs to start soon after infection.

What?...

The monkeypox has flown on a round-the-world on a multi-hop tour?

I do wonder:

  • Why now?
  • And is this a very rapid widespread spread?
  • Or has something happened to cause this to become conspicuous?

Some connection to some newly restarted worldwide (human social) event?

Stay safe folks!

Lawmakers warn antibiotic-resistant infections could spur next pandemic.

Lawmakers on Tuesday warned that superbugs – microorganisms that have evolved to resist existing antibiotics – pose a looming public health threat that could spur the next pandemic if left unaddressed.

Calling the coronavirus pandemic a wake-up call for the risk of widespread infections, Sens. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Todd Young (R-Ind.), along with Reps. Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.) and Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), introduced legislation in June to invest in preventative research and innovative drug production.

“What we have difficulty imagining is what a world looks like when you have an infection, and there is no antibiotic and it’s widespread,” Bennet said Tuesday at The Hill’s Antibiotic Resistance: A Looming Public Health Crisis event.

“The economic result of that could be catastrophic for the world. And then, obviously, the impact in terms of human life could be enormous.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2019 Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States report, at least 35,000 people die from the more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections that occur in the U.S. every year.

The bipartisan PASTEUR Act would incentivize development of antimicrobial drugs that target superbugs identified by the CDC....
As if we need anymore problems.

Anyhow on the COVID front Tuvalu has become the 230th entry to the lists and taking 229th place on the case list while North Korea has catapulted its way into 38th and will likely become the 37th member of the 3M+ club in the next reporting period.

Discover Magazine was reporting on drug-resistant super-bacteria in the late 1990s or early 2000s. One thought floated for their existence is the desire for "complete eradication". I wonder if that thinking has changed. Or, do we have more evidence that we should not go the route of complete eradication and also go with more "natural" ways of cleaning.

Beware of your strawberries.

US, Canada investigating strawberries linked to hepatitis A outbreak.

Several health agencies in the United States and Canada are investigating a hepatitis A outbreak potentially connected to organic strawberries purchased in March and April.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers against eating strawberry brands FreshKampo and HEB, sold at major grocery stores including Aldi, Kroger, Safeway, Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, Walmart and other major chains.

“Epidemiologic and traceback data show that fresh organic strawberries sold as FreshKampo and HEB brands that were purchased between March 5, 2022, and April 25, 2022, are a likely cause of illness in this outbreak,“ the agency said.

The FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, along with state and local partners, are investigating the infections, according to an announcement.

Hepatitis A cases reported in California, Minnesota and Canada were traced back to people who purchased the organic strawberry brands, the FDA said....
