Well I'm still waiting for the Cook Islands to make the lists, Cooks record fourth community case, but the world's total case tally has easily passed 428.8 million without them while total deaths passed 5,891,000. Anyhow the Grand Opening of the brand new 80M+ case clubhouse is underway, Brazil (3rd) blew the front doors off the 28M+ clubhouse while France (4th) damaged the doors of the 22M+ club yesterday, Russia (6th) took the doors out at the 15M+ club as Germany (7th) did the same at the 13M+ club, the Netherlands became the 14th member of the 6M+ club and Indonesia became the 17th country to enter the 5M+ clubhouse. Japan became the 19th member of the 4M+ case club, Malaysia was the 28th to join the 3M+ club as South Korea is on course to be the 40 member of the 2M+ club in the next day or 2, Lebanon was the 55th country to enter the 1M+ clubhouse while Uruguay became the 64th member of the 800K+ club, Finland the 73rd member of the 600K+ club and Venezuela was the 79th to join the 500K+ club. At the top 30 end of the death list the changes are Italy taking 8th spot off of Indonesia with Colombia and France both passing Iran to claim 10th & 11th respectively while Vietnam replaced Czechia in 24th and Canada did a mighty leap over Malaysia, Bulgaria and Ecuador to takeover 26th place. Anyhow even with all the ebbing and flowing still going on around the world cases generally are on the decrease ATM, but as seen before that could change at any time. [edit] Just in, Australia has just become the 29th member of the 3M+ case club. :-( |

Moderna has now been approved for use on 6-11yr olds down under. ATAGI formally approves Moderna for use in children in world first. Now that should get the kids in a lot of country and remote regions here vaccinated where the Pfizer doses are unsuitable due to storage requirements. |

Two sad highlights to remind everyone that, despite the politics, in reality the covid pandemic is very much ongoing: Hong Kong: What went wrong with its Covid plan? wrote: ... But the city has been brought to its knees with the arrival of the highly transmissible Omicron variant. The number of reported cases has soared to more than 66,000 in just a couple of months... Covid: Hong Kong's hospitals overwhelmed amid spike in cases wrote: Hong Kong's healthcare system has been overwhelmed by a huge surge in Covid-19 cases, with infected patients being treated outside crowded hospitals... And over in the UK: Antrim Hospital staff 'traumatised' by pressures wrote: Staff at Antrim Area Hospital were "traumatised" by the considerable pressure of patient numbers on Tuesday... So... That is over 1-in-4 people there with covid (although for some, that is not immediately requiring primary treatment, yet?)... Stay safe folks! And the UK covid numbers just now reported for last week are: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey headline results, UK: 23 February 2022 wrote:
And we still have a few hundred people dead each and every day. But also, how many newly with "Long Covid" disabilities? Those are still very high numbers but with a good hint that they are slowly subsiding. Yet we are already (too soon?) throwing away all restrictions and throwing healthy caution to the winds! The big gamble is for how well our health service can continue whilst continuing to be relentlessly so badly overstretched. And the Dido "Test 'n' Trace" numbers are now a complete PR fiction. Even though Florida persists in trying their "real" daily death rate here's how the updates have gone over the last 4 weeks, 66,001 to 66,463 to 67,322 to 67,910 to 68,572 to 68,955 to 69,553 to 70,247. Even inserting/sneaking 2-4 week old data in 2 a week still shows a grim picture going on there. :-( Meanwhile things arn't so rosy here down under either with last week's removal of most COVID restrictions already showing their signs in the daily infection rates. :-( But on the bright side for the moment is that hospitalisations across the country are currently down to 1,872 with just 123 of those in ICU and of those 26 are on ventilators, so having a vaccination rate is working. Sadly deaths here have got to 5,245, but a lot of them didn't need to happen. |

Over in the USA: 43% of Americans — 140 million — have had COVID, CDC estimates wrote: About 37 million infected in omicron wave, and 58% of kids were infected at some point Equivalent figures for the UK I believe list the seroprevalence at somewhere around 98%... Which is likely why we have a lot of people badly ill but not as many people dying. Note also: Vaccinated less likely to develop long Covid And very close to home: I have a good friend now suffering covid. As a 'just-in-case', she's been put on an experimental antiviral. She's triple vaccinated so hopefully she won't be suffering any long term problems. Stay safe folks! A new Oxford University-led study has shown even mild Covid reduces the size of your brain, creating widespread damage. People who have suffered mild Covid-19 are likely to have “significant” long-term effects on their brains, a new peer-reviewed study has found. |

The world's total case tally now exceeds 451.8 million as deaths pass 6,043,900 so it's time for a quick update now that things are starting to settle down a bit after the chaos. Niue has made it into lists in 227th place with 1 case, Vanuatu has moved up into 218th on the case list while the Cook Islands have now claim 215th, Tonga torpedoed the Diamond Princess to become the 212th member of the 1K+ club as Kiribati became the 209th member of the 3K+ club, Palau made it past St. Barth into 207th and the Solomon Islands are up to 194th spot. Bhutan is now in 176th spot, the Channel Islands occupy 145th as New Caledonia claims 140th, French Polynesia is up to 134th while Brunei became the 125th member of the 100K+ club, Guadeloupe is up to 119th and Iceland has made it into 115th place. Luxembourg is up to 108th place, New Zealand has flown into 98th while Cyprus is into 93rd, Hong Kong registered the longest flight into 79th as Finland became the 72nd member of 700K+ club, Latvia is into 71st and Singapore is in 62nd spot. Lithuania is now in 58th spot, Norway is up to 48th as Slovakia moved into 46th, Greece has claimed 38th with Denmark in 37th while Switzerland and Austria duke it out to see who will be the 34th member of the 3M+ club with Thailand becoming the 33rd member of that club, Australia after some shuffling remains in 29th as Czechia takes 26th, Malaysia took 27th and Vietnam became the 20th member of the 5M+ club. South Korea became the 26th member of the 5M+ club and are now chasing down Japan who is chasing down Mexico, Poland and Indonesia come in next finishing the 5M+ members off. The Netherlands passed Colombia to claim 13th as they head towards the 7M+ club where Iran resides. Argentina is still creeping towards the front door of the 9M+ clubhouse, Spain became the 10th member of the 11M+ club while Italy became the 9th member of the 13M+ club, Turkey was the 8th member of the 14M+ club as Germany flies through the 16M+ clubhouse, Russia became the 6th member of the 17M+ club and the U.K. is enjoying the service at the 19M+ bar. France is powering through the 23M+ club while Brazil made it into the 29M+ club as India slowly approaches the front of the 43M+ clubhouse and the U.S. has created the 81M+ club. The top 50 of the death list changes were Georgia moving past Morocco and Sri Lanka into 47th spot, Japan flew over Bolivia, the Netherlands, Thailand, Egypt and Iraq to land in 35th while Belgium removed Pakistan from 30th, Bulgaria took 27th from Ecuador as Spain took 17th from South Africa and France replaced Colombia in 10th. Well that'll do for now. |

... Note also: Vaccinated less likely to develop long Covid So... For a few revelations... Thankfully she has recovered quickly. Her oxygen saturation had almost immediately dropped to about 80% which is uncomfortably low. Normal saturation is around 99%... She isolated at home and the antivirals were delivered to her the very next morning. She's made a good recovery. Meanwhile... Ouch! Another friend who does long distance lorry driving got covid. He recovered ok, but is now suffering long term fatigue and looks permanently tired. He's still driving... And for a third victim out of our group, who is determinedly not vaccinated due to multiple unfathomable conspiracy stories, and she has now suffered covid for the second time. This second time round covid has left her badly fatigued and has unfortunately damaged her voice. She is a healthcare worker, so not being able to speak means she cannot work... Stay safe folks!
