Well here down under in Australia the COVID-19 vaccine rollout is coming along in leaps and bounds, even if we got off to a late and balky start on many other countries.

Up until the 25th of this month (day 245 of our rollout) 87.1% of our total population has had 1 jab while 74.1% are now fully vaxed. We're expecting to hit 90% 1st dose in 13 days and 90% fully dosed in 40 days (so far we have been running ahead of these estimates up to this point).

The Australian Capital Territory comes in on top with >95% 1st jabs with 88.9% fully dosed.
New South Wales comes in next with 93.2% with 1st jabs and 85.5% fully dosed.
Victoria comes in 3rd with 90.8% 1st dosed and 75.9% all dosed up.
Coming in close on the country's average is Tasmania with 87.5% having 1 jab and 72.6% all dosed up.
South Australia comes in next with 79.6% single jabbed and 63.1% double dosed.
Western Australia comes in next by the skin of its teeth with 76.6% single dosed and 60.2% double jabbed.
Queensland is the only eastern state that is dragging its feet with 75.7% with 1 jab and 61.2% double dosed.
The Northern Territory brings up the rear with 74.2% with a single dose and 61.7% fully dosed.

The last 4 had better get a move on as borders are coming down fast whether they're ready or not.

Also in 2 weeks fully vaxed people of the 1A rollout (aged and disability care patients) will be eligible for their Pfizer booster shots (or even Moderna boosters if they wish to mix'n'match) as their 6 months will be up then (Pfizer was also the only available vaccine here back then at the time). 1B participants will follow shortly after that.

Our contracted production run of 50 million Ox/AZ is coming to an end and won't be extended (we're having enough problems giving it away now) as booster shots for it will be of the nRMA type anyway (Pfizer, Moderna or the soon to be approved Novavax). Maybe P.N.G.'s latest outbreak will convince them to use the stock up this time.

Here in the UK we have a curious shift of numbers...


Over the last week, we have a suspiciously rapidly reducing number of daily infections coming down from a high of about 47000 per day (gov.uk 'dashboard').

However...

More reliably from the ONS, we have the continuing fairly steady rate of:

• In England, the percentage of people testing positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) continued to increase in the week ending 22 October 2021; we estimate that 1,102,800 people in England had COVID-19 ... equating to around 1 in 50 people.
  
  
• In Wales ... increased in the two weeks up to 22 October 2021, but the trend was uncertain in the most recent week ... around 1 in 40 people.
  
  
• In Northern Ireland ... increased in the week ending 22 October 2021 ... around 1 in 75 people.
  
  
• In Scotland, there were early signs of an increase ... in the week ending 23 October 2021 ... around 1 in 75 people.
  

And looking at the ONS charts, there is still a steady upwards trend towards yet more infections...


Is this where we are now reaching a plateau from almost everyone (non-vaccinated) having now been infected?!

Is the new "Delta-plus" variant an evolutionary response to reinfect again all those yet still not vaccinated??...


Regardless, we still have a very great many people ill with covid, and our hospitals are full, and we are moving into the cold damp dark part of the year with our hospitals already full before the additional winter loading of winter illness hits...

Actually you guys recorded a day of about 52K last week Martin, but yes it will be interesting to see how you go during this winter going into it with such high numbers. With us here going into summer might be about the only thing that will help down in Victoria with their stubbornly high case numbers and I still reckon that they opened up far too early down there.

Meanwhile Florida slipped in some more 4 week old data to take their death count from 58,933 up to 59,495, but why they still persist with this stupidity is beyond me.

Anyhow I'll throw in some milestones while I'm here.

Burundi became the 152nd member of the 20K+ case club, North Macedonia became the 92nd member of the 200K+ club while Armenia became the 82nd member of the 300K+ club, Lithuania became the 69th member of the 400K+ club, Guatemala became the 51st member of the 600K+ club as Georgia became the 49th member of the 700K+ club, Vietnam became the 40th member of the 900K+ club and Poland became the 16th country to enter the 3M+ clubhouse finally giving Mexico company at the bar.

Turkey is enjoying last drinks in the 7M+ clubhouse while the U.K. is enjoying last drinks in the 8M+ clubhouse.

And down in the Australian Capitol Territory (where all the federal pollies and public servants reside) are getting right into their booster shots already with their doses to population ratio passing 240 (200 is theoretically 100% of population).

Well it must be time for another coffee.

It hasn't been added to the lists as yet, but Tonga prepares for potential lockdown after its first case of Covid-19.. :-(

Tonga was one of only a few countries that had not reported a single Covid case since the start of the pandemic. But on Friday, Tonga's Prime Minister Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa confirmed its first positive case from a passenger who had traveled from New Zealand.

The infected traveler arrived in Tonga on Wednesday having flown from Christchurch, according to New Zealand's Health Ministry.

The passenger was fully vaccinated, had tested negative in New Zealand prior to the flight's departure, and was discovered among travelers staying at a hotel used for managed isolation and quarantine for new arrivals into the country.

Tu'i'onetoa said all airport staff who were in contact with any of the passengers on the flight have been quarantined and he warned Tongans to prepare for a potential national lockdown following the case, according to news website Matangi Tonga.

"We should use this time to get ready in case more people are confirmed they have the virus," he reportedly said.

Following the news of the positive case, thousands of people rushed to vaccination centers to get their Covid shots, Matangi Tonga reported.

Well that should use up so more of those AZ shots.

Meanwhile it's looks like we'll be going back to P.N.G. with another huge load of AZ and personnel to see if we can do any better this time convincing the locals to get the jab. It maybe easier this time with Delta on the rampage there now. Only 1% of their 9.9 million population is fully vaccinated and only 2% partly vaccinated. A big problem there is that the dozen main population centres only account for 10% of the total with very few roads. Main transport to get to all those remote villages is by boat, light plane or on foot with pack animals, but the biggest problem so far has been vaccine hesitancy. Of the doses that we took there last time almost half went off to Timor-Leste while our people took the rest along with their equipment over to Fiji before it all ran out of date. Fiji is now 70% fully dosed, though vaccine hesitancy seems to be a problem getting the rest there done also.

Whilst we have some curiously variable but still very high numbers of infection, we also have Trump-esque political silliness here in the UK:

... The government was warned that keeping compulsory face masks could lead to £4bn in lost revenues for the hospitality and events sector, the i reported in July.

But another reason for the government's reluctance could be more political.

While Mr Javid has been encouraging people to wear masks in crowded places, most MPs from his party have been sitting on the packed green benches in the House of Commons without masks.

Introducing rules on masks risks angering some Conservative MPs...

So... We have the coincidence of reduced mask usage, a slowdown in vaccinations, increased hospitality business, and an increase in rates of infection pushing still more people into actual hospitals...

And our hospitals are full.

Well Tonga went into a week long lockdown last night while things get worse in Russia.

Well since that post 12-15yr olds are now being reported in the stats that I'm using (it's an ever changing .pdf link so there's no point in posting it as it will change), but even with that lot now included our vaccination rates are still doing well, with that group already showing 68% having 1 jab while 47% have had both.

Day 253 of our rollout sees 88.7% of our population approved to be vaccinated are now single dosed and 78.5% fully dosed.

The Australian Capital Territory comes in on top with >95% 1st jabs with 93.7% fully dosed.
New South Wales comes in next with 93.7% with 1st jabs and 88.7% fully dosed.
Victoria comes in 3rd with 91.9% 1st dosed and 81.8% all dosed up.

You can bet that most covid victims will clamor for those drugs to "make them better". So why would they not also believe in getting vaccinated and using the precaution of masks to avoid the pain and suffering and the gamble of deliverance in the first place?
