Message 2106587 - Posted: 9 Sep 2022, 4:42:16 UTC - in response to Message 2106576.

Has Putin and the fossil fuels lobbyists won their war against our only one planet?...
Significantly absent from that is anything to boost making more (non-polluting) green energy available such as to bring forward any new wind or solar or tidal stream power. That £150,000 Million can completely independently power the UK a few times over with that (including power storage requirements).

Have you not learnt the fiduciary duty yet? Unless and until the market - not any or all governments by meddling - find a green energy that costs less than fossil, fossil rules the roost.

... And that is the whole craziness about all this:

  • The green energy is now ridiculously lower cost than any/all of the fossils;

  • And the fossils costs are increasing yet further as PooTin plays his games of fires and death...

There's some obscenely corrupt fiduciary games and profiteering going on there in gaming the Markets...

We need a different game for the "fiduciary" destructive greed...

This looks set to completely sink Florida and Texas, and the rest of the world along with them:

Climate change: Six tipping points ‘likely’ to be crossed
wrote:
Current rates of warming will put the Earth at risk of crossing six "dangerous" climate tipping points...

... If crossed they could spark a significant change in the way the Earth's systems operate, affecting oceans, weather and chemical processes, which could be "irreversible", according to the UN.

Once a critical point is crossed - or "tipped over" - the breakdown of the system is self-sustaining, so will continue even if there is no further warming. This is self-perpetuating: a bit like if a ball crests the top of a hill and starts rolling down and cannot stop...

... some destabilisation which precedes a system breakdown is already starting to be seen in the polar regions...

... Even though some of the other "tipping points" such as dieback in the Amazon Rainforest aren't expected to be triggered unless global temperatures rise by 3.5C, all of these systems are connected. So once one system begins to fail it could increase the likelihood of others collapsing...

Can we continue to deny that positive action is needed sooner rather than soon too late?...

This is our only one planet,
Martin

Louisiana is the most vulnerable state, and North Carolina is in more danger than Texas.

Nope. No way. Profit margin rules the roost. If it was really cheaper it would be in use and someone would have a monopoly on it and be getting well beyond filthy rich.

I'm sure I can clue in to the missing factor in the cost comparison. The land. A few dozen MW fossil plant isn't very big. A few dozen MW solar or wind plant covers a rather large area. Then you need to factor in some kind of "battery" to store energy when the plant can't generate any. You can't scale lab experiments up to megalopolis size plants on paper and then claim they are cheaper.

At last some good sense prevails over fossils-fueled "Greenwash"?...

Study contradicts Rees-Mogg over hydrogen for heating
wrote:
A new study has cast doubt on government claims that hydrogen could be used to heat homes and so cut greenhouse gas emissions...

... All those studies found that hydrogen was much less efficient and more costly than alternatives like heat pumps...

... energy scientists agree with Mr Rees-Mogg's assessment that hydrogen could play a role in storing energy, for example on a windy or sunny day when renewables are generating more electricity than the grid needs. Many also see it having a future in specialist industries that will prove hard to electrify, like shipping, steel production or aviation.

"Using hydrogen for heating may sound attractive at first glance," says Jan Rosenow the report's author and Europe Director at the energy think-tank the Regulatory Assistance Project.

"However, all of the independent research on this topic comes to the same conclusion: heating with hydrogen is a lot less efficient and more expensive than alternatives such as heat pumps, district heating and solar thermal,"...

... Generating electricity from wind or solar, converting it into hydrogen and then burning the hydrogen at home uses more energy than just using the electricity to directly heat a home, with a heat pump...

... "We do not have the time or resources to waste further investigating hydrogen's role in home heating, especially when the well-known laws of thermodynamics determine the answer," he said.

The report said there was a risk that discussion of hydrogen for heating in the future led to a delay in the deployment of clean heating technologies that are already available today...

All a game against the greedy fossils industry and their profits for their dirty "Blue Hydrogen"?...

Yet more ongoing greedy deadly pollution:

Revealed: Huge gas flaring emissions never reported
wrote:
Major oil companies are not declaring a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, a BBC News investigation has revealed.

The BBC found millions of tonnes of undeclared emissions from gas flaring at oil fields where BP, Eni, ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell work.

Flaring of natural gas is the "wasteful" burning of excess gas released during oil production ... standard industry practice.

Flared gases emit a potent mix of carbon dioxide, methane and black soot which pollute the air and accelerate global warming.

The BBC has also found high levels of potentially cancer-causing chemicals...

... UN special rapporteur on human rights and the environment, compared these communities to "modern sacrifice zones, areas where profit and private interests are prioritised over human health, human rights and the environment"...

... If all the natural gas flared globally were captured and used it could replace more than nine-tenths of Europe's gas imports from Russia...

... Capturing the gas can be initially expensive and technically difficult, ... But Mark Davis, chief executive of Capterio, which advises oil companies on capturing flared gas, told the BBC that countries like Norway have shown it is possible with the help of strong regulation.

And to think that our governments actively subsidizes such shoddy operating and gratuitous unnecessary pollution...

Yet more pollution long overdue for a cleanup.

How has this deadly old news lain quiet for so long?

BP in oil field where 'cancer is {as common as} the flu'
wrote:
... The UN told the BBC it considers these areas, in Iraq, to be "modern sacrifice zones" - where profit has been prioritised over human rights.

Gas flaring is the "wasteful" burning of gas released in oil drilling, which produces cancer-linked pollutants...

... The Iraqi government is aware the impacts this could be having. A leaked Iraq Health Ministry report, seen by BBC Arabic, blames air pollution for a 20% rise in cancer in Basra between 2015 and 2018.

As part of this investigation, the BBC undertook the first pollution monitoring testing amongst the exposed communities. The results indicated high levels of exposure to cancer-causing chemicals...

All a continued game of deadly profits?

And the world and people be deadly damned??...

Yeah, let's all go green & save the planet.
The company had proposed to build a new 3.6 GW gas-fired power plant at Selby which was expected to produce 75% of the UK's power sector emissions once the plant was underway.]A protest took place outside the company's offices in London in July 2019 and further protests took place in Yorkshire in August 2020. Protesters claimed that the company was asking for substantial subsidies to operate the new plant "in addition to the £2.36 million a day it already receives for burning biomass." After ministers overruled objections from the planning authority and decided to approve the plant, a legal challenge was brought against the ministerial decision but failed in the courts in January 2021. However, the company announced in February 2021 that the plans for the new plant had been abandoned.

Drax never really "looked right" in my mind. I had a few questions, not the least of which were where the fuel (timber, chipped/crushed) was coming from and the transport to Drax. It turns out the answers to these questions were not as green as one would hope.
