... People on both sides of the debate lobbied aggressively to make their case. By the time the issue came to voters, it was the most expensive ballot question in the state's history.

In total, the referendum battle cost over $100m, according to the Maine Ethics Commission, which tracks political spending. Those in favour of the project raised about $82m, mostly coming from Avangrid, Hydro-Quebec and CMP.

Some of the biggest donors to the opposition came from fossil-fuel companies. Energy firm NextEra gave over $20m, most of which was spent on television advertising. While the company supplies green energy elsewhere, in Maine it mostly delivers oil and gas... In total, opponents to the project spent twice as much on television advertising than the supporters.

That proved deadly...

... He blames lobbying from fossil-fuel competitors for the project's demise ... "There's not a corner of the world that isn't being adversely affected by global warming, and it's getting worse at an accelerating rate in many places because we're unable to push back against the fossil fuel interests,"...

I have to ask, why is it "... "jaw-dropping" findings..."?

If a member of the general public has a piece of plastic in hand and has to make the decision "which bin do I throw this in" will they get it right?

Probably not, has to be the answer, even if it has got the 'triangle with number' embossed into it.
Only numbers 1,2 & 5 are recyclable in most councils recycling centers unless they have informed you separately.

Unless I specific knowledge that this piece of plastic is recyclable it goes in the general rubbish bin, because in many cases if the recycling is polluted with 'non-recycleable plastics' then it is a wasted effort.

While this may only be a drop in the vast ocean of climate change it is one small step:

One scary line about half way down (a link to another bit of "news") is a young lady proudly proclaiming she will order five bits of clothing with the intent of only keeping one of them. This sort of attitude has led to a large pile of worn-once clothes somewhere, and costs the retailers a large pile of money both in the loss of revenue from that pile but also from the costs associated with having to sort and "dispose" of said pile.

So much so for the leap in clean technology that, for just one example, the dirty polluting old fossils industry in Australia have been playing dirty tricks and sabotage-the-clean-competition to keep burning our planet.

Lomborg was an undergraduate at the University of Georgia, earned an M.A. degree in political science at the University of Aarhus in
