Land is sinking as groundwater levels drop. New research shows how California could fix it.

As pumps hum on wells and send vast quantities of water flowing to farms in the San Joaquin Valley, the dropping water levels are leaving underground spaces in layers of gravel, sand and clay, causing the ground to collapse and sink.

Satellite measures have tracked the worsening problem, known as land subsidence. In parts of the valley, the land has been sinking about 1 foot each year. The shifting ground has damaged canals and wells, and threatens to do more costly damage in the years to come.

In a new study, researchers at Stanford University examined the sinking in one area of the San Joaquin Valley over 65 years and projected that subsidence will likely continue for decades or centuries, even if aquifer levels were to stop declining. They also found, however, that if aquifers recover with a significant rise in water levels, that could slow or stop the sinking within a few years.

“To get this subsidence problem under wraps, we really have to get the water levels to recover,” said Matthew Lees, a doctoral student in geophysics and the study’s lead author.

The research brings new insights about how the ground can continue to sink over a long period even if groundwater levels stop declining. Previously, there had been a widespread assumption that if water levels in an aquifer stabilized with reduced pumping, that would resolve the subsidence problem, Less said....

Flying over Antarctica, it’s hard to see what all the fuss is about. Like a gigantic wedding cake, the frosting of snow on top of the world’s largest ice sheet looks smooth and unblemished, beautiful and perfectly white. Little swirls of snow dunes cover the surface.

But as you approach the edge of the ice sheet, a sense of tremendous underlying power emerges. Cracks appear in the surface, sometimes organized like a washboard, and sometimes a complete chaos of spires and ridges, revealing the pale blue crystalline heart of the ice below.

As the plane flies lower, the scale of these breaks steadily grows. These are not just cracks, but canyons large enough to swallow a jetliner, or spires the size of monuments. Cliffs and tears, rips in the white blanket emerge, indicating a force that can toss city blocks of ice around like so many wrecked cars in a pileup. It’s a twisted, torn, wrenched landscape. A sense of movement also emerges, in a way that no ice-free part of the Earth can convey – the entire landscape is in motion, and seemingly not very happy about it.

Antarctica is a continent comprising several large islands, one of them the size of Australia, all buried under a 10,000-foot-thick layer of ice. The ice holds enough fresh water to raise sea level by nearly 200 feet.

Its glaciers have always been in motion, but beneath the ice, changes are taking place that are having profound effects on the future of the ice sheet – and on the future of coastal communities around the world.....

I reckon that we can now that we got rid of that fossil fuel loving conservative government that has hamstrung this country for so long, but they left quite a mess behind them that we're just starting to unravel the contractual and legal complexities and hurdles of how much they pandered to the fossil fuel industry (re: protected) through their policies.

Oh BTW there are a few things that report doesn't mention, yes there have been dozens of new coal projects planned here over many years, but none have actually gone ahead (much to the old government's chagrin) as most have been stopped through legal actions (prime Ag land has killed most off) and in the end no one wants to lend them the $'s to get started anyway (all financial institutions here won't touch them). Other than expansion of a few big mines the number of coal mines here has actually decreased greatly over the past decade and a lot more are also slated to close as the all old power stations that they support reach their end of life over the next few years (that's pretty much all of them).

But we also still have to wait for the new parliament to actually sit yet to get things started and that won't happen until the upper house has been finally decided upon (it really amazes me the number of people who expect sudden overnight changes when a new government is just elected)

We'll get there Martin and much sooner now. ;-)
