Clouds are water vapor and anyone who has a swimming pool can attest to the effects of cloud cover vs a clear night sky. It made at least a 1 degree difference in temperature drop overnight in my backyard pool.

So can we have a civil discussion based on facts rather than assertions.

By the way what are you paying per Kilowatt-hour there in the Northwest. TVA here was burning mostly gas but now the price has gone up for gas: still at around 10 cents per Kwh here in Tennessee.

My base rate is 8 cents and it goes up to 11 cents if I use excessive amounts.

Fabulous--very hard to believe.

Here is what I find--if wind and solar are heavily used --are they subsidized ?


Seattle area households paid an average of 11.7 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity in September 2021, compared to the 11.4 cents per kWh paid in September 2020. The average cost of utility (piped) gas at $1.187 per therm in September was more than the $1.089 per therm spent last year.Oct 19, 2021.

This is much less than I would have guessed.

And the denial (or confusion or confabulation) is?...

Note from that very same ACS article:

... The greenhouse effect that has maintained the Earth’s temperature at a level warm enough for human civilization to develop over the past several millennia is controlled by non-condensable gases, mainly carbon dioxide, CO2, with smaller contributions from methane, CH4, nitrous oxide, N2O, and ozone, O3. ... Because these gases are not condensable at atmospheric temperatures and pressures, the atmosphere can pack in much more of these gases . Thus, CO2 (as well as CH4, N2O, and O3) has been building up in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution when we began burning large amounts of fossil fuel.

If there had been no increase in the amounts of non-condensable greenhouse gases, the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere would not have changed with all other variables remaining the same. The addition of the non-condensable gases causes the temperature to increase and this leads to an increase in water vapor that further increases the temperature. The warming due to increasing non-condensable gases causes more water vapor to enter the atmosphere, which adds to the effect of the non-condensables...

That nicely describes the positive forcing and feedback loop that we see happening, now, that is caused by the ever increasing pollution from burning fossil fuels.

For a down-to-earth analogy, the CO2 is your heavy foot on the gas pedal, and the water vapor in the air is the size of your vehicle engine heating up the world.


Similarly, if we reduce the level of CO2 (and methane) down to the levels seen 200 years ago, then we will oncemore get the more benign and pleasant and more profitable weather as seen all those years ago.

How can that not be a better scenario than ever more deadly extremes?

About half way through the space.com article there is this little gem:

The rise in solar activity at the beginning of the last century through the 1950s or so matches with the increase in global temperatures, Usoskin said. But the link doesn't hold up from about the 1970s to present.

So we have a rise in solar activity (however Usoskin defined it) up to about 1950, but then it stabilises or decreases, but global mean temperatures have continued to rise. Not exactly a "good" correlation, especially when one looks the whole data, the rise in solar activity appears to have started about 1900, over half a century after the start of the current rise in global temperature.
Me thinks we have a journalist looking for a headline so they can get their next pay cheque, not a scientist showing some real facts.
