Virginia Inmate Awarded for Saving Deputy from Choking on Food: ‘He’d Do the Same for Me’
During a lunch break, Deputy Robert Rensch was eating a sandwich when he suddenly started choking on it. Harnell at first thought Rensch was having a stroke before he realized what was going on.

“At that time, I gave him the Heimlich,” Harrell told WTKR 3. “It took a little while, but eventually he coughed up what he was choking on. It was the longest 60 seconds of my life.”

"Coincidentally, it was Rensch who taught Harrell the Heimlich maneuver, as he teaches inmates first aid training." Best part of the story. :^)

Beautifully fantastic stuff hiding vitally under the greenery:

Biodiversity: Fungi are 'underloved and understudied'

Mushrooms aren't known for their ornamental value, but for this scientist they are a thing of beauty.

Science in action uncovering one of the more spectacular aspects of our world:

Tonga eruption: Atlantic seafloor felt Pacific volcano megablast
wrote:
The massive volcanic blast in the Pacific last year was felt 18,000km away on the other side of the world, on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean...

It was one of a number of intriguing phenomena picked up by the instrument network in the Azores-Madeira-Canary Islands region...

... the energy involved also shook the atmosphere, despatching so called Lamb waves in all directions. These are energetic waves in the air that move at the speed of sound, along a path guided by the surface of the planet. Over the eastern Atlantic they produced pressure changes that were transmitted to the seabed... It's a further 14 hours before a Lamb wave arrives...

5km down under the surface spectacular.

I'm not sure that Tinea Cruris* needs conservation as much as eradication.

Great fun!

And a great dedication:

The man who built a Hobbit house by accident
wrote:
Stuart Grant has spent decades transforming a ruined farm building into an ornately-decorated home which has been dubbed the Hobbit house.

But the 90-year-old says that it was not his intention when he started work on the project in the 1980s.

"It's all a mistake really. It was only meant to be temporary,"...

... That stop-gap then became ...

... "just a coincidence".

He has not read JRR Tolkien's books The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, or seen any of the film or TV adaptations of the author's work.

For Stuart, it is simply called home - and he believes it is nothing special...

Beautifully done.

And all good fun!

Now this is positive news.

Lord Howe Island woodhen numbers double in a year as wildlife bounces back after rodent eradication.

Threatened species on Lord Howe Island are making a striking comeback after the introduction of a rodent eradication program several years ago.

Among the species flourishing on the World Heritage-listed isle, which sits about 600 kilometres east of Port Macquarie on NSW's Mid North Coast, is the Lord Howe Island woodhen.

It's a flightless bird, endemic to the island, and the most recent woodhen census revealed its numbers had more than doubled in the past 12 months.

Atticus Fleming, the chairman of the Lord Howe Island Board and head of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, said the woodhen was once on the brink of extinction.

"The Lord Howe Island woodhen is probably the most famous of all the species on Lord Howe — it's an emblem for the island, and the population has increased to over 1,100 birds in the latest survey," he said....

More positive news for the environment.

Australian Government plans to protect marine area the size of Germany around Macquarie Island.

The federal government has confirmed its commitment to tackling Australia's extinction crisis by announcing a plan to strengthen protections of globally important waters off the south-east coast.

An area roughly the size of Germany is set to be added to Australia's protected marine zones, safeguarding the future of millions of penguins, seals and sea birds on Macquarie Island.

The remote and rugged island, halfway between the main island of Tasmania and Antarctica, hosts up to 100,000 seals and 4 million penguins, including the royal penguin, which is found nowhere else in the world.

Its shores are the breeding ground for several species of albatross, including the endangered Grey-headed Albatross, and an abundance of sea life that visit its waters, including whales....

Rewilding seas: Some waters off England to get full protection
wrote:
Three stretches of water off the English coast are to get the strictest possible environmental protections, as part of new measures to restore the health of the sea.

Fishing will be banned along with all activities that damage the sea bed, such as mining and laying cables.

Proposals to bring in Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) at two other sites have been dropped.

Critics say the plans lack ambition and progress is far too slow.

Prof Callum Roberts, of the University of Exeter, said the protected areas would make a big difference to the sea-life within them but covered only 0.5% of English seas.

"At this rate of progress it'll take 260 years to get to the level of protection that science says is needed..."

At least that is a start...

Much more is needed, and sooner!

Here's hoping that a modern day legend can raise enough awareness soon enough:

Attenborough's Wild Isles shows us our own 'spectacular' nature
wrote:
Sir David Attenborough says there's never been a more important time to invest in the nature in our own backyard.

Wildlife in the British Isles can be just as "dramatic and spectacular" as anything elsewhere, he says.

After travelling the world to make nature documentaries, the 96-year-old shines a light on natural history closer to home for the first time.

Nearly half of British wildlife species have declined since 1970...

... Series producer, Alistair Fothergill, who has worked with David Attenborough for 35 years, wanted to call attention to internationally important wildlife and habitats on our own islands, from seabirds to chalk streams.

"We are globally important for nature - and I don't think many people in Britain appreciate that,"...

That will be beautifully presented and a beautiful spectacle to enthuse people.

Hopefully also, our politicians and industry will come to see our natural world as being valuable to remain natural...

All in and on our only one planet,
Martin

David Attenborough's Wild Isles: What it's like to work with BBC star
wrote:
... Katie has been working on David Attenborough's new BBC natural history series called Wild Isles.

"I've been filming across the British Isles over the last three years and it's been incredible to give airtime to our wildlife," she tells Newsbeat.

And yes, Katie says the legendary 96-year-old presenter is as nice as you'd imagine.

"He's so patient and not a diva by any means," she says.

"He'll happily wait for us to faff around with equipment and have a cup of tea with us too.

"David is incredible, so knowledgeable, but also very kind. If I could adopt him as my grandpa I would."...

Still time to save Our Wild Isles, say UK conservation charities
wrote:
... The National Trust, WWF and RSPB have 8.5 million members.

"We've come together because whilst we have spectacular nature here in the UK, it is in crisis," said Tanya Steele, the chief executive of WWF, which has 1.5m members.

The "Save Our Wild Isles" campaign aims to use Sir David Attenborough's new five-part series focusing on UK nature to help catalyse action...

... "We need to use the love which people have for nature and amplify it to make sure everyone plays a part to make a difference," said Hilary McGrady, the director general of the National Trust, which has 5.8m members.

The charities want individuals, businesses, public bodies and our politicians to participate...
