This is the moment it all went wrong for an American baseball fan who was left with a broken neck and back after falling 6m to the field.

A new video of the moment a Pittsburgh Pirates fan fell 6m after leaping up with excitement and plunging to the field shows what might have caused the harrowing plunge.

Kavan Markwood, 20, is shown from behind jumping to his feet before his leg clips the railing directly in front of him in new footage of the horrific PNC Park incident taken during April 30’s game against the Chicago Cubs and shared by CBS News.

The heart-stopping video, taken by security cameras inside the stadium during the bottom of the seventh inning, shows a shirtless Markwood, wearing beige shorts, springing to his feet before flipping over the railing as he celebrated an RBI double from the Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen.

The fall is being treated as “accidental in nature” by Pittsburgh Public Safety, which investigated the incident.

Markwood, who broke his neck, back, and collarbone, is a former star football player at South Allegheny High School.

Earlier vision of the incident showed him dramatically tumbling to the playing field.....

Looking into the tracks of time can be revealing.

Earliest-known 'reptile' footprints discovered by amateur fossil hunters in Victoria.

Builder Craig Eury and winemaker John Eason were fossil hunting near the Victorian town of Mansfield when they spotted some footprints on a slab of rock.

"It was literally the footprints that caught my eye — the light hit the rock in way that cast a shadow on the footprints," Mr Eury said.

"I couldn't believe it — it's rare in life you find what you've always been dreaming about finding,"

Mr Eason added.

It turns out the footprints they discovered back in 2021 were made by an early relative of reptiles, birds and mammals — known as an amniote — according to a study published today in the journal Nature....

....Mr Eury and Mr Eason — both study co-authors — discovered the footprints on the bank of Broken River in Taungurung country in the foothills of the Victorian Alps.

Dated to be approximately 356 million years old, the trackway is 40 million years older than previous fossils.....
Cheers.

AI Tool Uses Face Photos to Estimate Biological Age and Predict Cancer Outcomes
Eyes may be the window to the soul, but a person’s biological age could be reflected in their facial characteristics. Investigators from Mass General Brigham developed a deep learning algorithm called FaceAge that uses a photo of a person’s face to predict biological age and survival outcomes for patients with cancer. They found that patients with cancer, on average, had a higher FaceAge than those without and appeared about five years older than their chronological age. Older FaceAge predictions were associated with worse overall survival outcomes across multiple cancer types. They also found that FaceAge outperformed clinicians in predicting short-term life expectancies of patients receiving palliative radiotherapy. Their results are published in The Lancet Digital Health.

It was like that in Germany when they changed from German handwriting to Latin one in schools somewhen in the 1950s. While I learned to read the German Fraktur script of old books myself (not taught in my school years), I never managed to read my grandma's German handwriting she learned in school. Later, years after WW2 as an adult, she learned... or rather 'switched' to Latin handwriting. But the cursive writing of all people her age always looked somewhat awkward... so many sharp points and corners, zigzaging across the paper, instead of the regular soft curves of latin handwriting.

So, if you e.g. read a postcard; it's easy to guess the writer's age based on its handwriting style.

Today, there are no longer mutually accepted education standards. It even doesn't depend on the federal state (which have authority on school education here). Even within the same city, there are primary schools where they teach students in cursive handwriting from the beginning. Other schools... with progressive... modern young teachers... bla bla..., just teach them to write down single letters, like in a printed sans-serif font. These kids later develop an ugly, clumsy handwriting as they never practiced true handwriting, thus did't learned the skills you need with your hand and fingers...

We were lucky, all our kids learned handwriting in school... but as usual... girls spend enormous effort to master it until it looks almost perfect, while my teenage son, well... You can read it... some guessing...

Quality workmanship never goes out of fashion. If you're going to do something, you might as well do it right.

Getting rescued just to get killed.

Man falls to his death after fire department’s ladder breaks while fleeing blaze

A US man plunged to his death when a fire department’s ladder suddenly gave way as he evacuated a blaze at a New York apartment building, shocking video shows.

Footage taken by a bystander of the fire at 3902 Ninth Ave shortly after 7am on Monday (US time) shows the man climbing out of a third-story window as smoke billowed out behind him – while a firefighter waited at the top of a retractable ladder to help him escape the flames, the New York Postreports.

As the man stepped onto the first rung, the top section of the ladder suddenly retracted, and the man went into a spinning free fall onto the awning of a deli below before hitting the sidewalk, the video shows.......

I was taught cursive writing in school as well as the San serif block letters. I can write either way but I mostly use a hybrid combination of the two. A mix of both cursive and block characters. It’s readable if you know both fonts.
