For those of us that are old enough to remember the end of the 80's and the start of the 90's...

Vanilla got into trouble for that song. Queen sued him for stealing the music from Under Pressure and won.

Bummer. My computer is not booting up. Something is wonky on power up. Press power and almost everything powers up. Fans and optical drives start up then the hard drive activity light stays solid red and that’s it. Nothing else.
Cleared CMOS and disconnected the IDE hard drives and still nothing except the drive activity light is not on. Don’t have a CR2032 battery to replace the current one. Do have a CR2025 but I will have to wait until Walmart opens in a little over four hours. I hope it is something simple. It may also have give up the ghost. The system is over 11 years old. If it is the motherboard, I will have to convert the IDE drives to SATA. Luckily I have the parts to do it.

CMOS battery dead & it will still boot up, just with date & time all wrong.
As well as HDD & CD/DVD ROM disconnected, try it with the video card removed if it's still got a beeper in the chassis- it should give some long/short beeps to indicate no video card.

Otherwise, remove the CMOS battery & mains power & leave it for a few hours.
I've had 2 systems that appeared dead boot after doing that. They both ran for a while afterwards, but in both cases i took it as a sign they weren't long for this world & replaced them while they still lived.

It doesn’t make a beep. Just powers up all fans run. Cycles the optical drives and hangs with the hhd light on. Tried removing the GPU and use the integrated motherboard graphics and still nothing. Will pull the CMOS battery and power cord and see what happens.

Pull ALL the drives magnetic, floppy, optical, SSD, not just the data cable but also the power cable. See if you get beeps or if it drops into a BIOS screen.

Then if nothing, also remove the video card and listen for beeps. (Just bare MB nothing connected)

If nothing, pull the RAM and listen.

If nothing, pull the battery, wait some considerable time and try, without battery.

You are now down to just two things, the power supply or the MB.

Either:

A failed PSU,

Or hopefully merely a dirty connection on one of the connectors or components.

(Just disconnecting/reconnecting the connectors can be enough to clean them into good operation again.)

Good luck!

I had the power and CMOS battery removed for several hours. Put a new battery in and put the GPU back in. Still nada. Memory is not easy to get at. Two of the four sticks are under the CPU cooler. I don’t have any new thermal paste to reapply. Will continue to poke and prod to see if there’s any life.

I had a problem of net access on my used Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G phone, Firefox said it could not get here, tried clearing all sorts of settings, nada, tried clearing the router, still nada, so I went from Android Firefox to Waterfox and the site is reachable again.

Sounds like a good time to upgrade.
Forecasts are for SSD & RAM prices to continue upwards from their present prices for a while yet.

I'd suggest an AMD AM5 motherboard- you can use a cheap Zen4/Ryzen7000 series CPU now, and it will support one of the new Zen5/Ryzen9000 series due out late this year, early next year (rumours are that they're approx 30% faster & use 15% less power than the current series Zen4 CPUs- which already perform exceptionally well & at very low power levels).

Agreed. The motherboard way back then SATA and GPU were about the only upgrade paths. The CPU is a FX 4170 in a AM3+ socket. About the only redeeming fact the CPU had was 4.2Ghz with no over clocking.
The only real gripe I have is the cases currently have no real drive cages for optical drives. May have to recycle my old case.

Wow, that is ancient.

Even a mid range current CPU would give a huge boost in performance.
eg 7700X v FX-4170

I run an Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2 3.5Ghz hex core cpu in an EVGA X79 DARK motherboard, and the cpu is not directly supported, the 1660 v2 is supported and is 3.7Ghz, not being supported directly means a reset can be a pain, like press F1, load a saved bios setting, save the configuration and then reboot, no more EVGA for me ever again, that is a goal my next motherboard an Asus Rampage IV Black Edition was supposed to fix, and it will if I can get some help completing that upgrade, plus going from a 2.5" 512gb hdd to a 1tb ssd which I already own, then get win 10 that I bought including a key installed with a 3060 or a 3090 video card, sound blaster pcie card. I don't own a 3090 card, yet.

Right now I'm loosing weight, if I can continue on the current loss rate I could in theory be at 205lbs or so in 5 months, I'm at 460lbs now, 10 days back I was 477lbs. And all with no injections or diet pills. I might have to buy some extra large shirts, eek!!
I think part of my weight loss is due to what I eat and my prescription pain pills, acetaminophen 500mg and one 15mg pill of Meloxicam once a day, both are prescribed to me. I'll be almost as skinny as I was when I was 18yrs old then, the 5 months will miss my 64th birthday by 2 months, rats, boo who, boo who. I can already roll on my side without too much effort, I'm sorry but flying in a blue and red suit and cape will still not be possible since the flight kit is on back order for the next billion years, boo who. Besides my 3 cat gawds are not leaving me, even if I'm melting away...

Zoom, Congratulations on the weight loss! I'm rooting for you successfully reaching your goal and hopefully maintaining it.

Your back, knees, etc will thank you for it.

Yes it is ancient. But it served it purpose. Now I may let a service tech dust off the ancient dried thermal paste and take a look. If it is time to stick a fork in it. It might be a while before a replacement will take its place. So I will watch the “tech guru’s” on YouTube talk specs and opinions. And the one thing I want is another “stealth” system. Meaning no RGB bling or LED lights on the inside the case. Just total dark.

Yeah, i don't see the point of LEDs on everything.
My motherboard has an LED indicating XMP is selected for the memory, and the video cards have the manufacturer's name lit up and cycle slowly through different colours.
But LED fans & memory modules & everything else are just annoying to me.

The only lights I have are on the front panel. A blue power, red hard drive activity and one each on the two optical drives. Inside the case nothing has any light. It is a black hole inside. Can’t say that about my next rig yet.
