Testing sites response times. Edit load & response times on Windows Firefox ok but still not what it should be. |

Testing sites response times. Yep, the forums have been badly sluggish... Backups in progress? Nebula running in the background slugging the database or the VMs?... Campus or datacentre weekend work impinging? Keep searchin', Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Today is Fast and Furry-ous Day! Today is the anniversary of the first Road Runner cartoon's debut in 1949. What does that mean? It means Wiley E Coyote and the Road Runner share the same birthday! :-) |

Mostly right, but some of us sometimes use kg for huma weight depending on what is doing the measuring says..... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Mostly right, but some of us sometimes use kg for huma weight depending on what is doing the measuring says..... And I frequently still use fahrenheit. Plus we, my youngest and I, mix metric and imperial when using wood, i.e. 1.63m of 4x2. And doors are still in 3" multiples from 18" to 36"even if the stores are stupid enough to say it is 762mm (30"). Sheets of ply, MDF, chipboard and plaster (Drywall) are also 8' x 4', much easier than 2.44m x 1.22m. |

Mostly right, but some of us sometimes use kg for huma weight depending on what is doing the measuring says..... Yep... There's a LOT of history in our measures and traditions. With that comes a lot of hubris to cling on to what has gone before... And then we have a scary confusion of the mish-mash of units used in aviation!!! Also similarly so for spacecraft... Until... What was that NASA mission that missed the destination planet because one group of people were using miles whereas another group were using kilometers?... The Mars Climate Orbiter The navigation team at (JPL) used the metric system. Lockheed Martin, which designed and built the spacecraft, used the English system. |

What was that NASA mission that missed the destination planet because one group of people were using miles whereas another group were using kilometers?...Mars Climate Orbiter The primary cause of this discrepancy was that one piece of ground software supplied by Lockheed Martin produced results in a United States customary unit, contrary to its Software Interface Specification (SIS), while a second system, supplied by NASA, expected those results to be in SI units, in accordance with the SIS. Specifically, software that calculated the total impulse produced by thruster firings produced results in pound-force seconds. The trajectory calculation software then used these results – expected to be in newton-seconds (incorrect by a factor of 4.45)– to update the predicted position of the spacecraft. |

Thanks for that. ... (incorrect by a factor of 4.45)... Ouch! That was a bit of an expensive flyby... For comparison, I've had the confusion of speed indicators that have been unclear as to whether they were reading mph or knots... And then I blundered across one really overly clever electronic display that would display either, depending upon hidden settings... That one panel was set to knots, the firmware was updated as part of maintenance, and then tested and all looked fine. Fortuitously, although not part of the tests, my paranoia questioned that there were no dial markings to show what the units were... Only when scrolling through the setup again did we notice a units toggle setting! Oooer!!! That required yet another sticky label... Enjoy! With that comes a lot of hubris to cling on to what has gone before... IMHO the change to metric was educationally one of the worst decision ever made. People who were brought up using Imperial measurements and £sd were usually good at mental arithmetic and didn't flinch away from multiplying or dividing by other numbers other than 10. |
