Oxford Vaccine How so fast? That, unfortunately, is an often far too often repeated story where researchers waste inordinate amounts of their time chasing totally uneducated 'bean-counters' for funds to be able to do their primary job and exercise their primary expertise of research. That was one of the reasons I moved on from research work... Ya cannae live sensibly on ad-hoc yearly grants! Especially when you might not get paid the next month whilst the bean counters blindly twiddle their spreadsheets. Ofcourse, the same bean counters themselves have the security of allocating their own salaries, on time, in perpetuity... There has to be a better way... Stay safe folks! Now that the majority of the weekend numbers came in the last reporting period (except for Sweden and their 4 day weekends) here's how things stand. The world's total case number is now just over 59.5 million along with just over 1.4 million deaths. The U.S. is continuing to lead in its usual way passing 12,777,000 cases and 263,600 deaths while India cruises along in a safe 2nd place with a case count of over 9,177,700 along with over 134,250 deaths (3rd place in that list) as Brazil idles along in 3rd with over 6,088,000 infections and over 169,500 deaths (2nd in that list). France (4th by cases 7th by deaths) is coming off the boil case wise while Russia continues to set new P.B.'s and will soon claim back 4th place by cases (11th by deaths). Spain (6th by cases 9th by deaths) has now passed 1.6 million cases (over 43,100 deaths), but the U.K. is still closing in on them with almost 1,527,500 cases (5th by deaths with 55,230). Italy (8th by cases 6th by deaths) is relaxing the throttle a little with almost 1,431,800 cases (50,453 deaths) though still closing the gap with the U.K. on both counts while Argentina (9th by cases 10th by deaths) passes 1,374,600 cases along with over 37,100 deaths as Colombia (10th by cases 13th by deaths) fast approaches 1,255,000 cases (along with 35,479 deaths) and Mexico (11th by cases 4th by deaths) continues at its usual pace. that rounds out those countries with over 1 million cases. Peru (12th on both counts) is now limping along with Germany about to take them out of 12th place by cases (most likely during this current reporting period) with both Poland and Iran also closing in fast. South Africa (16th by cases 14th by deaths) is just maintaining a pace and is pretty safe for about a fortnight before the Ukraine threatens their place by cases. Indonesia has become the 21st country to pass 500,000 cases with Czechia, the Netherlands and Turkey in a race to soon join them. Romania passed the Philippines to claim 26th by cases and now has Bangladesh on their radar. Canada (30th) has picked up its pace and is quickly closing in on Saudi Arabia. Morocco (32nd) is about 2 days from bumping Israel off while Switzerland becomes the 33rd to pass 300,000 cases and is fast closing in an both of them. Jordan has finally taken 38th from Ecuador while Serbia has leapt up 4 places to land in 50th place, Georgia shoved Ethiopia out of 58th and Croatia took 60th after passing Honduras as Venezuela became the 62nd country to pass 100,000 cases. Well that's about it for now and I'm sorry for the long windy post, but I needed to get several things covered at the top end while things are a little quite further down ATM, though I'm sure that there will be more to come. |

The world's total case number sailed right on past 60 million during the last reporting period while setting a new daily death record of over 11,700 taking that total well past 1,413,700. :-( Europe also claimed 1st place by cases in the regional race passing 16,035,500, Asia now sits in 2nd with over 15,990,000 cases, while North America sits in 3rd with just over 15,115,600 cases followed by South America with over 10,796,500 with Africa next with just over 10,796,500. North America still leads the death count with over 395,900 with Europe in 2nd place with over 365,600 followed by South America with over 319,200 while Asia comes in next with over 281,500 and Africa accounts for just over 50,400. Oceania well and truly drags the chain in both categories. In the country case race Luxembourg slipped past South Korea to claim 93rd place while Malaysia replaced Singapore in 83rd, Slovenia removed Nigeria from 81st as Denmark took over 77th place from Uzbekistan and Myanmar slipped past Bosnia & Herzegovina into 70th spot. Azerbaijan knocked Slovakia out of 64th place and now has both Moldova and Venezuela in its sights as Croatia zipped past Ethiopia into 59th while Kazakhstan gave up 52nd spot to Belarus and Bulgaria leapt past Armenia into 50th. Sweden (who finally put in their 4 day weekend numbers) passed Nepal to claim 36th place, Switzerland became the 33rd country to pass 300,000 cases as Morocco smashed Israel out of 31st, Czechia became the 22nd country to pass 500,000 cases while Poland became the 14th to pass 900,000 and Germany trampled Peru to claim 12th place. The only change in the death race top 50 to report is that Jordan claimed 48th place from the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile here in Australia, in a very lonely 95th place by cases and just knocked down 78th by Lebanon in the death list, all borders except for South Australia's will be fully opened on the 1st of December and Victoria will have their revamped quarantine facilities back up and running again on the 4th. Anyhow that's all for today's update. |

The world set a new daily death record during the last reporting period of just over 12,000 taking that count past 1,425,900 while recording another day of over 600,000 new cases taking that total past 60.7 million. :-( Now onto the movers, shakers and stumblers. Sri Lanka passed the Ivory Coast to move into 98th place and are now back to hunting down Finland who is hunting down Cameroon while Lithuania threw Ghana out of 86th with Singapore being their next target. Moldova became the 63rd country to pass 100,000 cases while passing Venezuela, then Azerbaijan leapt both to land in 62nd place as Georgia slipped past Egypt into 57th. Lebanon regained 55th spot after passing Guatemala as Serbia put in a huge leap to pass Costa Rica, Japan, Qatar and the Dominican Republic to land in 45th and now has Kuwait as well as Bolivia in their sights. There are still quite a lot of countries that in a mad hurry to quickly close massive gaps while some have about closed them and are ready to launch new attacks. |

The world has fallen just short of making it to 62 million cases and 1.45 million deaths while U.S. numbers have been down as they travel around their country gobbling up turkey, but I expect that their numbers will go up next week after they all get back home and goodness knows what sort of spike Thanksgiving will actually produce (just look at Canada after theirs). Though they have clocked up just over 13,454,000 cases along with just over 271,000 deaths. Anyhow I'll try and catch up with what's happened over the last 2 days in the case race. Russia has reclaimed 4th place from France as they continue to break their own case and death records while passing 2.2 million cases and over 38,500 deaths. Italy (8th) is now in a race with the U.K. (7th) to see who can knock Spain out of 6th place.Germany (12th) has become the latest country to join the 1 million plus case club as they continue to chase down Mexico while Poland has taken 13th spot from Peru. Iran became the 15th country to pass 900,000 cases while Turkey has now put in 3 massive days to leap from 24th place to land in 19th. The Netherlands became the 24th country to pass 500,000 cases as Canada finally caught Saudi Arabia to retake 29th place. Jordan (38th) joined the 200,000+ case club as Hungary removed Ecuador from 39th spot. Serbia leapt over both Kuwait and Bolivia to land in 43rd place while Bulgaria jumped up 3 spots into 47th and even though Japan passed Qatar they still remain in 48th as Costa Rica continues to lose places even though their pace remains the same now finding themselves back in 50th, but they should pass Qatar before Armenia (52st) and Belarus (53rd) intrude on them. Georgia jumped both Guatemala and Oman to take up 55th place as Azerbaijan did the same to both Honduras and Ethiopia to land in 60th. Slovakia became the 65th country to pass 100,000 case while passing Venezuela to claim 64th followed by Greece who became the 66th to do the same as well as claiming 65th. Myanmar jumped both Bahrain and China to land in 68th spot as Bahrain passed China to claim 69th as Kenya slipped past Libya to claim 72nd. Paraguay became the 74th country to pass 80,000 cases, Palestine became the 75th while passing Algeria who became the 76th to pass that same mark. Slovenia leapt past Kyrgyzstan, Ireland and Uzbekistan to land in 78th place as North Macedonia displaced Singapore from 84th while South Korea has responded to both little Montenegro and just as little Luxembourg passing them and is in the process of closing that gap back up. Meanwhile here in Australia (still in a very lonely 95th place) Victoria has produced its 29th case free day after its 3 month lockdown, but they've moved their quarantine opening now back to the 7th December, with only South Australia now throwing up the odd case of local transmission every 2-3 days since their little blunder (though they've just reported finding another 2 cases today). After that massive update I need a beer or 3 as the temp here reaches 31C. |

Los Angeles County just went back to a "Safer at Home" shutdown order with about 5000 new day cases on a population of 10 million. Bexar County Texas as 12000 new day cases on a population of 2 million and allows indoor everything. Math says Bexar county is 12 times more cases per person than Los Angeles county. We are very soon going to see the results of these different approaches. I soon expect not just El Paso morgue photos by New York morgue photos from Bexar. El Paso photos show trailers with racks. New York they ran out of rack space, bodies piled like cord wood. |

El Paso photos show trailers with racks.Over here we've been seeing on the news a lot of counties in a lot of states over there with many rows of those same trailers. :-( In fact by all reports here many states have hospitals and morgues that just can't handle the load at all as well as shocking pictures of hospital staff in "before and now" takes and the physical changes in these people is highly outrageous (those that are still alive anyway). :-O 1 must wonder how things could get let go so out of control over there. |

While some countries enjoy having the weekend off from reporting as another enjoys its now customary weekly 4 day holiday and half of another is still chewing on turkey (that's the bird type, not the country) the last reporting period saw the world's case total pass 62.5 million and 1,457,500 deaths, but it's now time for another case race update (well as best that can done be without all the numbers). Finland finally caught up to Cameroon and removed them from 96th place while still being 7 days or so away from catching Australia. Lithuania removed Singapore from 85th while Algeria took 75th from Paraguay and until the numbers come in from Libya Palestine has provisional 73rd. Croatia has leapt into 56th place after passing Guatemala and Oman as Georgia removed Lebanon from 54th and Japan slipped into 47th passing Bulgaria. Hungary became the 39th country to pass 200,000 cases, Romania blew Bangladesh out of 25th spot as Turkey gobbled up and spat Belgium out of 18th and the U.K. has passed 1.6 million cases while France passed 2.2 million. Meanwhile Russia continues its record breaking run as Brazil looks to be getting back into gear again after having a breather. Anyhow that'll do for the time being. |

As I wait for my office hours to finish here I was just interested in the spread of things in the great COVID race and I just thought that I'd share my findings. In the case race here's the current breakdown of the spreads. The sub 1000 group finishes at position 172. The 1000-1999 group covers 171 to 163. The 2000-2999 group covers 162 to 154. The 3000-3999 group covers 153 to 151. The 4000-4999 group covers 150 to 147. The 5000-5999 group covers 146 to 135. The 6000-6999 group covers 134 to 130. The 7000-7999 group covers 129 to 127. From 40000-49999 only contains Afghanistan in 88th. The 50000-59999 group covers 87 to 86. The 60000-69999 group covers 85 to 82. The 70000-79999 group covers 81 to 77. The 80000-89999 group covers 76 to 68. From 90000-99999 only contains Tunisia in 67. The 100000-199999 group covers 66 to 40. The 200000-299999 group covers 39 to 34. The 300000-399999 group covers 33 to 28. The 400000-499999 group covers 27 to 25. The 500000-599999 group covers 24 to 19. From 600000-699999 only contains Turkey in 18. The 700000-799999 group covers 17 to 16. There's currently no one in the 800000-899999 group. The 900000-999999 group covers 15 to 13. The 1 million group covers 12 to 6. The 2 million group covers 5 and 4. Then we jump to Brazil at over 6.3 million, India at over 9.4 million and then the U.S. at over 13.7 million. In the death race the groupings are. The sub 1000 group finishes at position 78. The 1000-1999 group covers 77 to 56. The 2000-2999 group covers 55 to 45. The 3000-3999 group covers 44 to 41. The 4000-4999 group covers 40 to 36. The 5000-5999 group covers 35 and 34. The 6000-6999 group covers 33 to 31. From 7000-7999 only contains Pakistan at 30. The 8000-8999 group covers 29 to 27. From 9000-9999 only contains the Netherlands at 26. The 10000-19999 group covers 25 to 15. From 20000-29999 only contains South Africa at 14. The 30000-39999 group covers 13 to 10. The 40000-49999 group covers 9 and 8. The 50000-59999 group covers 7 to 5. Then there's a big jump to the 100000-199999 group that covers 4 to 2 and then comes the U.S. with over 273,000. Well that's off my chest now. |

Latvia (currently 104th) has been moving up the case list quickly as it will become the latest country to enter the top 100. Uganda has become the 100th country to pass 20,000 cases as Kyrgyzstan replaces Ireland in 80th while Palestine moved past Kenya to claim 72nd and Azerbaijan took 59th from Egypt. Georgia clearly passed Kazakhstan to take over 53rd while Belarus slipped past Armenia to claim 51st, but that may not be enough to hold off a charging Georgia, Bulgaria removed Kuwait from 47th as Japan leapt over Kuwait, the Dominican Republic and Bolivia to land in 44th and Serbia jumped over Panama and the U.A.E. into 41st place. Iraq slipped past Chile into 20th place as Turkey again puts in a big number to become the 18th country to pass 600,000 cases while Mexico is accelerating becoming the 11th country to pass 1.1 million and Colombia became the 10th country to pass to pass 1.3 million. Russia (4th) is still pulling away from France ATM, but with France easing restriction and the crazy Catholic Church there wins a case against limits (what is it with religious institutions around the world that makes them so keen on being super spreading hot spots?) it's expected that cases will be on the rise there before Xmas. Meanwhile over in the U.S. their daily numbers have been low with a few states and many counties around that country still to report their numbers since Thanksgiving while many wonder what sort of impact that holiday period will have on their numbers in the coming days leading up to Xmas. The last reporting period saw the world's total case count pass 63 million while passing 1,464,800 deaths and this reporting period will see the numbers from those countries who take weekends off coming in. More to come later on this madness. |

Now that most of the weekend's numbers are in the world's case count has passed 63.5 million while deaths have passed 1,473,000. In the case race Algeria slipped past Libya to claim 74th spot while Croatia removed Lebanon from 55th, Georgia took 52nd from Armenia as Bulgaria leapt over the Dominican Republic and Bolivia to land in 45th and the Netherlands passed Czechia to take 23rd. Meanwhile as the U.S. runs out of hospital beds, and the staff to look after them, there is now shortages of testing equipment as people returning from Thanksgiving holidays cue for hours to get tested, but what is really disheartening is a recent poll that shows that 42% of its citizens will refuse to get vaccinated against the virus when the vaccine becomes available which in itself is extremely frightening. :-O |

The last reporting period saw the world's case total pass 64.1 million while deaths now exceed 1,485,600. In the case race Cameroon has been knocked out of 97th place by Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan has taken 79th from Uzbekistan, Paraguay removed Libya from 75th while Palestine jumped over China and Bahrain to take over 70th, Greece displaced Slovakia from 64th and Moldova claimed 62nd from Honduras, Azerbaijan leapt over both Guatemala and Oman to land in 57th, as Georgia did the same to both Belarus and Qatar to take 50th. Bulgaria removed Japan from 44th place, Portugal became the 34th country to pass 300,000 case while Morocco took 30th from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan became the 28th country to pass 400,000 cases as the Netherlands took 33rd spot from Czechia and Iran trampled Peru out of 14th. Meanwhile Italy (8th place) continues to chase down the U.K. who is chasing down Spain (6th), though both countries are easing off their throttles a little, as states and counties in the U.S. begin to add their missing numbers from their 4 day weekend taking their case numbers past 14.1 million while deaths now pass 276,900 and Florida has become their 3rd state to pass 1 million infections. As to the no jab no nothing, once the vaccines become widely available here Qantas will not allow those who havn't had theirs to board their aircraft (expected to start around the end of March 2021 ATM) and many businesses won't either as that could leave them open to OH&S prosecutions by not providing a safe work and/or place of business so those anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists are going to be in for a very rude shock next year. |

The world recorded another record daily death count of over 12,370 while adding at least 634,970 to the case count (those numbers will rise further as some numbers are still missing) taking the totals past 1,498,367 and 64,823,381. :-( Now to the case race position changes or milestones. Latvia has made it to the head of their pack and 101st, but they now they have a gap to bridge to take out the Ivory Coast, Albania knocked El Salvador out of 89th while Lithuania trampled over North Macedonia to claim 84th, Malaysia slipped past Nigeria into 82nd as Slovakia passed Honduras to take over 64th, Croatia blew Kazakhstan out of 54th and Belarus replaced Qatar for 51st. Georgia took an almighty leap past Qatar, Belarus, Costa Rica and Kuwait to land in 48th as the Dominican Republic passed Bolivia to reclaim 46th for a short time, Bulgaria brushed Japan aside for 44th, Turkey became the 18th country to pass 700,000, while Poland became the 13th to pass 1 million. Meanwhile the U.S. put in another 200K+ day to pass 14.3 million cases while setting a new daily death record of at least 2,831 taking that total past 279,860 (Nebraska seems to be doing a Sweden with their numbers these days so they're still to add to those totals) and even that state of West Virginia will pass 50K cases during this reporting period. More updates will follow tomorrow. ;-) |
