By the end of the last reporting period the world's total case tally had passed 135.2 million with over 2.92 million deaths. :-(

At the top end of the deaths list there was only 2 changes as the Philippines took 31st spot from Bulgaria while Poland grabbed 13th from Argentina and now to the place changes on the infections list.

As mentioned earlier Malta took 115th place from Australia and now Madagascar is into a sprint to beat the D.R.C. to be the next to demote us here, Thailand passed Malawi to claim 112th while Cameroon displaced Singapore from 101st, Cuba nudged past Uzbekistan into 95th as Norway became the 88th country to pass 100,000 cases, Uruguay kicked Albania out of 82nd and Kenya ran right over Myanmar to take over 79th.

Guatemala replaced Armenia in 69th along with both joining the 200,000+ club, Slovenia slipped past Lithuania before Ethiopia leapt past Costa Rica and them to land in 64th as Palestine took 56th from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan jumped into 52nd after passing both Bolivia and Nepal while Greece and Croatia both passed Georgia to claim 49th and 50th respectively, Bulgaria booted Slovakia from 43rd and Morocco became the 38th country to join the 500,000+ club.

Hungary became the 32nd country to pass 700,000 cases while the Philippines leapt over Portugal and Israel to claim 28th, Iraq became the 26th country to join the 900,00+ club as Indonesia displaced South Africa from 19th, Poland booted Colombia from 11th and Turkey blew Italy out of 7th spot.

Meanwhile it looks like India is eager to reclaim 2nd spot back from Brazil as their daily case numbers keep on rocketing upwards. :-O

Now that most of the numbers are in from over the weekend the world's total case tally by the end of the last reporting had passed 137.2 million while passing 2.92 million deaths. :-(

At the top end of the death list the Philippines replaced Iraq in 30th place and Hungary jumped over both Canada and Belgium to land in 23rd so now onto the changes in the case list.

Uruguay flew past North Macedonia, Myanmar and Kenya to land in 78th spot, Armenia replaced Guatemala in 69th as they continue their battle while Moldova removed Ireland from 60th, Kazakhstan continues their tussle with Palestine by claiming 56th as Bolivia again nudged past Nepal into 53rd, Malaysia kicked Panama out of 45th and Japan became the 39th country to enter the 500,000+ club house along with knocking out Morocco from 38th.

We'll have to wait for Sweden to get its numbers in to see if the Philippines has succeeded in claiming 27th as Iraq slid past Belgium into 26th, Romania became the 24th country to join the 1 million club while Germany entered the 2 million club house, France became the 4th country to pass 5 million infections and India reclaimed 2nd spot back from Brazil.

Until next time, stay COVID safe.

Covid-19: US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
US health authorities are calling for a pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine, after reports of extremely rare blood clotting cases.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it was acting "out of an abundance of caution".

It said six cases of severe blood clotting had been detected in more than 6.8 million doses of the vaccine.

The recommendation follows similar rare cases in the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has prompted some curbs in its use.

In a series of tweets, the FDA said it and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were reviewing "six reported US cases of a rare & severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the vaccine. Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare".

"We are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution," it said.

I had an appointment to get vaccinated with J&J in an hour from now. They just called and cancelled.
I dunno, I think my odds with the J&J at 6 out of 6.8 million would've been better than my odds are of getting COVID now without the vaccine. I surely would have taken the vaccine.

I made a typo in yesterday's update that I just noticed and it was that Germany had joined the 3 million club house, not the 2 million, but meanwhile the U.S. has created a 32 million job while Saudi Arabia became the 42nd to join the 400,000+ club and Greece has become the 49th to enter the 300,000+ club house.

Also now that Sweden's numbers are finally in they just got to keep hold of 27th spot on yesterday's case list, but it looks like that they'll lose that today unless they can throw in a ridiculous number.

After over 4 months of disuse India is now clearing out the cobwebs from the 14 million case club house so it should be sparkling by the time that Brazil enters it (whether India will still be there to welcome them will be another story) while Turkey has crashed into the 4 million club house to become the 7th member and Bangladesh became the 33rd to join the 700,000+ club.

Meanwhile Sweden did throw up that big number to keep the Philippines out of 27th spot. :-O

A report in the Telegraph says that the chances of getting blood clots (cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT)) from Covd-19 is eight times likely that getting them from a vaccination.

I gather from what is said that some deaths from Covid-19 are due to blood clots in the brain and these are of a much greater than deaths that might be due to those caused by the vaccines.

Well India has become the 2nd country to report over 200,000+ new daily cases (216,850 in fact) as their numbers continue to go ballistic (I wonder if they'll surpass the U'S.'s record of over 300,000+) while the Philippines (27th by place on the case list, I doubt that Sweden can pull off a number that will stop them from claiming that spot this time) crashed into the bar at the 900,000+ infections clubhouse after charging the door as Croatia became the 50th member of the 300,000+ club and on the death list France became the 8th member of the 100,000+ club. :-(

Meanwhile further down the case list Madagascar put in a good leap to pass Australia and Malta to claim 155th spot.

There are also reports floating about today that WHO declared that Europe had passed 1 millions deaths, but no stat sites are showing that number as yet (a minimum of just over 35,000 still is required on those).

Anyhow a full update is due tomorrow, but I thought that I'd throw in those few tidbits today.

Sadly, how not to over-hype the good effects of vaccination:

Chile sees Covid surge despite vaccination success
wrote:
Chile's Health Minister Enrique Paris has been striking a gloomy note at his daily Covid news conferences in recent days. The number of daily cases reached a new record high on 9 April, going over 9,000 for the first time since the pandemic began and considerably higher than the previous peak of just under 7,000 cases in mid-June...

... Intensive care units are again overwhelmed, the country has for a second time closed its borders to everyone who is not a resident and most of its 18 million inhabitants are back in lockdown...

... What went wrong?

Critics have accused the Piñera government of getting caught up in triumphalism over the vaccine rollout and of having loosened coronavirus restrictions too fast...

... Restaurants, shops, and holiday resorts were opened up to kickstart the faltering economy...

... the message about how to prevent contagion, such as wearing masks and washing your hands, was also somewhat neglected during the summer months in Chile. That, she explains, "is probably one of the causes of the outbreaks we are seeing now"...

... complying with the full vaccination schedule is therefore paramount. "Just one dose doesn't give you the whole preventive response," she explains.

It is a message that María González thinks the government has not done enough to get across.

The Santiago resident has just received her first jab at a vaccination centre. "Two jabs are needed before the vaccine works properly," ... "And even then, we still need to be careful, follow social distancing and other safety measures."...

Similarly, here in the UK, we still have a long way to go before we yet get any of our teenagers even on just one jab and yet the media is recklessly hyping the pandemic news up into PARTY TIME!...

There are reports that the Sinovac vaccine, that is most common in use in Chile, is only just over 50% effective.
It will be interesting to see if this had some effect on the problem now facing Chile.

There are reports that the Sinovac vaccine, that is most common in use in Chile, is only just over 50% effective.
It will be interesting to see if this had some effect on the problem now facing Chile.
And it is selective out-of-context quoting like that that fuels the anti-vax hysteria...

Adding the context from that article, we have for completeness:

... Data on the efficacy of the CoronaVac vaccine is varied. Brazilian trials suggested an efficacy rate of around 50.4% but results from late-stage trials in Indonesia and Turkey suggested a much higher rate - between 65% and 83%.

A study published by the University of Chile last week (in Spanish) looked at the level of protection the vaccine offered after the first and the second doses. It suggested CoronaVac was 56.5% effective in protecting people against infection two weeks after they had received their second dose, but the figure was only 3% in the timespan between the first and second doses...

... in the trial that showed an efficacy rate of around 50% many of those who got infected only had very mild symptoms or were asymptomatic. She stresses that the important thing is that no-one in the trial needed to go into intensive care.

She insists CoronaVac prevents deaths and severe illness and is also proving effective against the Brazilian variant...

So, to summarize the main points:

  • Multiple studies are being done, early results from one study (Brazil) show 50.4% with two other longer studies showing between 65% and 83% effectiveness;
  • The Brazil (50.4%) study saw mainly mild or no symptoms for those who suffered COVID infection and significantly noone needed any intensive care.

To me, that looks like a big win regardless of which vaccine someone might get - for the protection seen AFTER THE FULL COURSE OF TWO DOSES.

The bigger problems are, as is too often the case:

  • the media sensationalizing and confusing the story;
  • and then also the politics jumping the gun on claiming the pandemic is 'somehow over'.

Get vaccinated.

But still stay safe folks!
Martin

To add to the highly notable and influential who have been vaccinated, we at long last have His Holiness himself:

Covid: Dalai Lama urges others to get vaccinated as he receives first {dose}
wrote:
Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has received his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine while urging others eligible to "take this injection".

"This is very very helpful, very good," he said as he was given the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab at a facility in the Indian city of Dharamsala on Saturday.

The Dalai Lama had enrolled himself to be vaccinated, officials said.

India launched its vaccination drive on 16 January, but it was limited to healthcare workers and frontline staff.

Since 1 March, however, the scheme has been extended to people aged over 60...

All very good!

(But why do the press have to cause alarm by suggesting in the title that His Holiness had been "shot"?)

Also those implying that the jabs will stop one catching Covid.
They do not, they only "potentially" prevent hospitalisation & fatality, something which even doctors state.

The Turkish trial was only carried out on a very small number of people, in the tens, no more.

A real-world study of millions of Chileans finds CoronaVac vaccine has found it 67% effective against symptoms after both shots.

The Brazil 50.4% numbers come from Sao Paulo in a trial of 13,000 people.

For the moment I will go with the low efficiency numbers and say with that few people tested , that wasn't a trial in Turkey.

The last reporting period saw the world's total case tally pass 140.7 million while registering over 3,011,550 deaths. :-(

The only change at the top end of the death list was Bulgaria replacing Iran in 31st so let's see what's changed on the case list.

Thailand jumped over Malawi and Zimbabwe into 11th place, both Kyrgyzstan and Zambia passed China, but Cuba flew over the lot to claim 92nd, while North Macedonia replaced Myanmar in 81st, Guatemala slipped past Armenia into 69th as Lithuania displaced Slovenia from 65th, Paraguay leapt over Denmark and Ireland to take over 61st (I thought that they may have taken Moldova as well, but they havn't got their last day's figures in yet), Azerbaijan nudged past Georgia into 51st and rounding out the final changes is Lebanon taking 39th spot from Morocco and Argentina replacing Colombia in 12th.

BTW, Sweden didn't get to stop the Philippines from cementing 27th place, but they did become the 28th member of the 900,000+ clubhouse.

WMD's? No need, just use WMI's (weapon of mass infiltration).
Russia normally has to spend huge amounts of money on computer hacking and disinformation to spread discord and uncertainty in Europe. Now the vaccine appears to be achieving something similar without any effort.
Pierre Vimont of Carnegie says the Putin administration will be pleased. "I'm sure they are enjoying this," he said, "let's not be fooled. The use of vaccines by Russia and by China is a diplomatic instrument, a tool for soft power. Playing {EU} member states off against each other is naturally important to Russia."
Politicians at work
Also, the Jab does not stop you getting Covid.
Argentinian President Alberto Fernández tested positive for Covid-19 in April after receiving two doses of Sputnik in January and February. That's a reminder that even if the Gamaleya Institute's claimed efficacy rate of 91.6% turns out to be true, a small statistical risk remains among those who've been vaccinated.

Meanwhile elsewhere
