It looks like France has shot itself in the foot again.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-55916020 @ 10:36
How did the UK become French vaccine firm's best customer?
The French media is asking questions about why a French pharma firm has promised 100 million doses of its in-development Covid vaccine to the UK, when not a single order has yet been placed by France or the EU.

The Franco-Austrian Valneva - based near Nantes - has had substantial UK government financial aid of £14m to scale up its production site at Livingston in Scotland.

It also had UK help to roll out phase one and two trials of its viral vector vaccine. Results of these are due in the coming weeks and it’s hoped production could start in late summer.

Valneva director general Franck Grimaud said on BFMTV: "When we announced that we were developing our vaccine last April, we contacted several governments and institutions. It was the UK which was the first to give a comprehensive response, and we signed a pre-accord with them in July."

"It’s a failure for France. It hurts to see this beautiful business taking off for the UK," says Christelle Morancais, president of the Pays de la Loire region, who says she alerted the French government last June. "This company had solutions. [French President Emmanuel] Macron says we are at war - well in war you need different methods from our bureaucratic, technocratic form-filling."

Les Echos financial daily says: "Why has the French government not expressed interest in the Valneva project, leaving it to the British government to offer financial support and - logically therefore - reap the benefits a privileged partner?"

Maybe the same reason that they're publicising that Australia has ordered so many vaccine shots, but without stating the fact that those shots will be doing most of Oceania?

Another reason why lockdowns don't work.

Will this benefit be needed for any extended period after the end of April?
BBC - Ending benefit lifeline risks health of millions, medics say
Failing to extend a £20 lockdown benefit boost will harm the health of millions of people for decades, leading health organisations have told Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a letter.

Introduced last year, the £20-a-week uplift is due to end in April.

Will it not be the case that the vast majority of the UK population will have had their first jab by the end of April and therefore the country should be able to return to "Normal" shortly after that.

The Maths.
UK population = ~66 million
20% are under 16, over 10 million have had 1st jab, nearly 4 million are immune because they have had covid-19.
Therefore 66,000,000 * 0.8 -14,00000 = ~39,000,000
And about 500,000 get jabbed daily, so in ~ 11 weeks everybody should have at least received their 1st jab and 3 weeks later be reasonably immune (~57% immune). About mid-May.
Herd immunity should have occurred before that.

The last reporting period saw the world's total case tally pass 105.9 million while deaths passed 2.3 million. :-(

Now for an update on the latest case chart movements.

Cuba flew over the Ivory Coast, Australia, and Cameroon to land into 106th place and then the Ivory Coast passed Australia to take over 108th, Uruguay and Mozambique passed Uganda to claim 100th and 101st respectively while Estonia nudged Finland out of 98th as Zambia flew over Afghanistan, El Salvador and Singapore to land in 93rd spot and Latvia took 88th from Ghana.

South Korea removed Uzbekistan from 86th spot while Nigeria jumped over Oman and Paraguay to claim 73rd and then Paraguay passed Oman, Greece knocked Palestine from 67th as Kuwait leapt over Egypt and Armenia to take over 62nd and then Egypt passed Armenia, but not before Slovenia claimed 61st from Armenia and Ireland removed Denmark from 56th.

Malaysia put in a long distant flight over Bulgaria, Azerbaijan and Croatia to land into 49th place while Bolivia slipped past Bulgaria to move up into 52nd, Slovakia took 46th from Ecuador as Portugal jumped over Romania and Chile to claim 23rd and Czechia (29th) became the latest country to join the 1 million case club.

Meanwhile the U.K. still looks set on taking Russia out of 4th place, albeit at a much slower pace, and while the U.S. is looking to control itself it is now just 703,000 from equaling the combined totals of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places, but things could improve yet.

Now to the grim top 30 list, Germany has replaced Spain in 8th spot while Portugal knocked Iraq from 27th and Sweden took revenge on Pakistan to move back into 30th.

Anyhow I think that I've got things back up to date, at least until my next update anyway.

Meanwhile, we have:

Covid PPE: How healthcare workers came to feel 'expendable'

Covid: Halls party with 150 students stopped in Sheffield

Covid-19: Police fine baby's birthday party-goers £11k

A year into a deadly pandemic and how is it that some people still do not get that we are in a deadly pandemic?...

Stay safe folks!

I was listening last night to someone on the Isle of Man having a rant about the behaviour of his fellow countrymen & countrywomen about their behaviour follow the re-opening of pubs last week. The manner in which they were cramming into pubs because it was the first weekend since their lockdown had stopped - even pubs that would normally be fairly quiet on a Friday night..... Is the Isle of Man trying for another lockdown - it will only take one of those celebrating to be a carrier and there will be tens if not hundreds of case in a couple of weeks time

And therein lies a selfish or otherwise 'unaware' killer:

There really are those who consider themselves invulnerable and so just can't be bothered with a small thing like a pandemic and people around them dying... Or even those that consider wearing a mask to be 'sissy'...

And then there are those totally unaware of anything beyond their nose...

Golgafrinchan D Ark?...

We really do need better schooling. For the parents also!

Maybe our 14 day quarantine of people returning from overseas may not be enough as a returned person tests positive on day 16, 2 days after leaving quarantine.

Some time ago (months) I heard someone talking about the time required to move from "exposed" to "developing" to "infective". This was said to vary between about 8 days to something north of 15 days and very dependant on the individual, but the norm being about 12 days, which is why most countries have chosen 14 days incubation (12 days plus a couple for "safety").
From what I gather the Australians have very rigeros control within their quarantine facilities, but, like any human system it can fail and allow cross contamination.

Now that most of last weekend's numbers are in I guess that it's time for another update and so far thing are looking a lot better than they were a month ago with daily case numbers being down almost 50% from what they were, but the world's total case count is about to pass 107 million while total deaths pass 2,335,500. :-(

Nothing has changed in the top 30 of each list position wise, though I must say that it looks like the U.S. has got over their festive season and "Trump mania" as they've now got their daily case numbers down by over 50%, but they've still passed 27.7 million infections along with passing 476,400 death while they're still closing in on a certain mark being less than 640,000 away now from equaling the combined totals of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places, and the Netherlands became the 21st country to join the 1,000,000+ case club.

Anyhow, from the other end of the case list, Senegal shoved Australia out of 109th place, Cuba kicked Cyprus from 105th as Montenegro nudged past Norway to take 91st, Albania removed Kyrgyzstan from 84th while Libya slipped into 77th past Bosnia/Herzegovina, Ethiopia replaced Myanmar in 71st and Honduras tripped up Qatar to claim 69th spot.

Greece has re-passed Guatemala to reclaim 66th spot while Belarus slipped into 47th past Ecuador as Slovakia got past Georgia to claim 45th, the U.A.E. took 41st from Panama and the Philippines swept Bangladesh out of 31st.

Meanwhile other than a couple of recent blips here our numbers are already in for the current reporting period and the results are 2 new cases in hotel quarantine along with 1 historical case being reported so we likely won't hold onto 110th place for long. BTW, the Australian Open is only reporting crowds of 30% of their allotted 30% capacity turning up for it so it's looking like a bit of a fizzer so far, that's around 11,000 per day divided around the 3 main venues, with no reports so far of anyone being breached for breaking COVID-19 restrictions.

That is all just games of numbers...

Shame how some of those numbers are people's lives...

For some real world numbers:

Press release: NHS COVID-19 app alerts 1.7 million contacts to stop spread of COVID-19
wrote:
The app has now been downloaded 21.63 million times, representing 56% of the eligible population aged 16+ with a smartphone...

As well as contact tracing and booking a test the app allows users to check their symptoms via the symptom checker. Coronavirus symptoms have been reported into the app over 1.4 million times...

Over 3.1 million test results have been entered into the app across England and Wales, of which 825,388 were positive. This is a combination of both tests booked through the app and test results manually entered into the app...

The app, which works as a part of the wider [NHSX, Serco, Dido Harding] Test and Trace programme...

Figures on the app’s wider features show users have checked into a venue over 103 million times. A total of 253 venues were identified as ‘at risk’ as a result of an outbreak...

We analysed the impact of the 1.7 million notifications sent by the app, and our statistical analysis showed that approximately 600,000 cases were averted...

Data on the NHS COVID-19 app will be published weekly alongside NHS Test and Trace data from Thursday 18 February...

Not mentioned is the cost of £22,000 Million thus far and rising.

I have lots of questions to rather questionable aspects to that little lot...

Very briefly:

  • The downloads figure may well be accurate, but that says very little about actual continued usage or the numbers of people involved.

  • Note how the greater majority of reporting has been self-entered! And from that, the follow-on contacting is a surprisingly small proportion of the number of those that have self-reported.

  • And at multiple £100 Millions cost, that app as a 'services portal' is a ridiculous cost.

  • How many more lives would be saved and how much less disruption would we enjoy from greatly better application of that £22,000 Million?

  • Who has profited from that?

Stay safe folks!

For some more numbers:

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey: characteristics of people testing positive for COVID-19, countries of the UK, 9 February 2021

That is some atrocious wording for the shown results! Looks like an automated AI robot has blindly summarized the charts...

Rewording, I read the summary to be:

  • Cough, fatigue and headache were the most commonly reported symptoms from people who tested positive... Abdominal pain, diarrhoea and nausea were less commonly reported symptoms.

  • Of those testing positive for COVID, (only) 38%, and upto 55% those people reported [noticing] having any symptoms.

Turning that around, that shows that of those people that have been tested for whatever reasons and were found to be positive for COVID, 45% to 62% of those people were asymptomatic noticing no symptoms for themselves!

Hence, over half of COVID infections are not noticed until far too late!...

Really, we must ALL act that we may well have COVID and to take precautions to not spread it further...

Geeeeee... Is that why we have such a persistent pandemic?!

Stay safe folks!

Marvelous. What a mjt8uyv shambles!
Got got a text message at 12:29 this afternoon.
"Dear Sirius
You are invited to book your Covid-19 vaccinations
Please click the link below".
Did so.
Vac centre is across the other side of the city on the edge.
Sheesh.
Close down 6 surgeries to combine into a purpose built medical centre.
The front floor space alone can fit at least 2MBT's side by side.
Between that site & the vac centre are many more medical centres yet they do the vacs in a community association building?
BTW, the text came from the medical centre (Or so I thought as it came up on phone as such).
Who the F are accrux?
AccuRx is a British software company working in the health sector. The company was co-founded by Jacob Haddad and Laurence Bargery, who met and subsequently founded the company at Entrepreneur First in 2016.
Accurx has raised £8.8m in funding from venture capital firm Atomico, as well as investors LocalGlobe and Entrepreneur First. Launched in February 2018 in a handful of surgeries, the start-up's Chain SMS service is now used in more than 1,400 GP surgeries around the UK.
How does accuRx keep the data secure? We transmit and store data in encrypted form. This means nobody else can read it without the right credentials. When stored, your data is encrypted in an extremely secure UK-based Microsoft Azure data centre.

Yeah right. All okay then.
