Message 2067154 - Posted: 29 Jan 2021, 4:29:40 UTC - in response to Message 2066950.

"for future debate" - just now there is no real evidence either way for the annual booster. We'll just have to hurry up and wait.
The UK is one of the world's leading countries when it comes to the speed of the roll-out of its coronavirus vaccination programme - a fact made all the more impressive given where the nation started when the pandemic hit early last year.
At that point the country had just one vaccine manufacturing site - a facility in Liverpool which made flu jabs.
But the Government quickly set up a vaccine task force in April to make sure the UK was well-positioned to benefit from medical breakthroughs.

The experts appointed to the task force reportedly recommended seven projects for investment within its first two weeks, according to The Times.
Advance purchase orders were hammered out by the task force with suppliers despite the fact there were no guarantees that any of the vaccines would work or that they would be signed off by regulators.
That early work meant the UK was in pole position to receive the jabs, if and when they were shown to be effective and safe.
The task force's strategy means two companies have been relied upon to do much of the heavy lifting during the UK's vaccine roll-out: Pfizer and AstraZeneca.

The UK ordered 40 million doses from the former and 100 million doses from the latter.
Agreements are also in place with a handful of other would-be suppliers should their products get the green light.
The speed with which the UK moved on vaccines was perhaps best illustrated this week when Pascal Soriot, the chief executive of AstraZeneca, revealed the deal with Britain was agreed three months before the EU's.

The UK's supply of the AstraZeneca vaccine is made at sites in Oxford and Staffordshire before it is put into vials at a facility in Wrexham, while the Pfizer jab is made in Belgium.
Every new batch of vaccine in the UK has to be safety tested by the National Institute of Biological Standards and Control in Hertfordshire before it can be sent for delivery.
This process takes about four days and once each batch has been rubber-stamped it is taken to secure Government warehouses where the NHS takes over the process and decides where the doses will be sent.
The physical roll-out of the vaccine is headquartered from an NHS office in London, with doses sent to more than 1,400 vaccine sites across the country.
It is easily the biggest vaccination drive in the history of the health service and many believe it will become an annual programme.

Germany admits vaccine shortage until APRIL amid fury at EU bungling.
Germany's health minister has warned its shortage of coronavirus vaccines will stretch into April as the backlash against the EU's bungling gathered pace.
The grim message came as Germany's top-selling Bild newspaper described the problems around procuring supplies as a 'scandal'.
Jens Spahn said he wanted to invite pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers for a summit to make sure that Europe gets its fair share of doses.
'We will still have at least 10 tough weeks with a shortage of vaccine,' he tweeted.
Mr Spahn said he recognised that producing vaccines was very complicated and building up production could not just be done in a few weeks if quality standards were to be upheld.
Earlier this week Germany supported EU proposals to set up a register of exports of COVID-19 vaccines, as tensions grow with AstraZeneca and Pfizer over sudden supply cuts just a month after the bloc started vaccinating citizens.

Well the last reporting period saw the world's total case tally pass 102.6 million cases along with deaths passing 2.2 million. :-(

Now to the case position changes, Uruguay has taken 100th spot from Uganda while Zambia knocked Luxembourg from 96th, Montenegro replaced Singapore in 92nd as Latvia bumped Ghana from 88th, Nigeria passed Venezuela to claim 75th place.

Guatemala slipped past Palestine to take 66th place, Slovenia took 63rd from Kuwait as Ireland booted Costa Rica out of 57th, Malaysia jumped over Costa Rica and Denmark to land in 55th while Bolivia passed the Dominican Republic to claim 52nd and Slovakia displaced Belarus in 47th .

The U.A.E. nudged Lebanon out of 42nd as Israel blew Iraq out of 27th while Czechia removed the Netherlands from 20th.

Meanwhile the U.S. which has been reporting lower case numbers of late is now just under 930,000 away from passing the combined totals of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places with over 26.5 million infections, but there's now talk of the relaxing some restrictions again (what few there were anyway) so numbers there could rise again, while their death count passes 447,400. Mexico also replaced India in 3rd spot on the death list while Spain took 9th from Iran as Portugal leapt over Pakistan and Sweden to land in 29th place on that grim list.

Stay tuned for the next update.

That this Tennis is going ahead confuses me.
The F1 opening race is always in Australia, not only that around the very same park they use for the tennis, but this year it has been postponed, because of Covid-19, until November.
In comparison to an F1 circuit a tennis court is small, probably more like very small, yet they are going to allow crowds at 50% of the normal size.

Totally f***ing barmy. -1/10

To be fair though we did hold the 4 Test Series against India with 25-30% capacity crowds without a case of local transmission being recorded at those venues and we certainly don't have the problems with COVID-19 that you guys elsewhere around the world have by an extremely long shot. Australia has now gone 14 days without a locally acquired case being recorded while Victoria itself has gone 25 days without 1. We also sit currently sit in 107th in the list by cases, but we will be overtaken by a few more countries soon enough.

Another thing is that the BBC report doesn't say is that the tournament is held at 3 sites in 3 arena's with accompanying outside venues around them with big screens that would normally cater for 90,000 people per day so spectator numbers there have also been cut down to a third as well along with some very tight restrictions being involved.

The F1 race is much different beast as it could not be profitably held within its confines with a crowd reduction of that sort and after 3 months of total lockdown and isolation from the rest of the country (a thing that also should've been done elsewhere) so their economy is really in need of boost.

Another thing that hasn't been mentioned (and I only learned about later) is that Tennis Australia actually paid for all the charter flights as well as all the hotel quarantine and other associated costs that are/were involved with this tourney and if things do go wrong then Victoria will be baring the brunt of it again. ;-)

It is just a shame though that our Prime Minister didn't pay for charter flights to get all the rest of our citizens that are still stuck overseas back home in the time that he promised, but what can 1 expect from a penny pinching right wing government?

Our W.A. Premier, Mark McGowan, is eating crow today. He's has been forever giving it to the eastern states over Hotel Quarantine measures and yet his has had a leak for days now.

Perth plunged into five-day lockdown after positive case spends days in community.

https://abc7.com/society/anti-vaccine-protesters-temporarily-shut-down-dodger-stadium-site/10168355/
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A group of anti-vaccination protesters on Saturday afternoon forced the temporary closure of the Dodger Stadium COVID-19 vaccination site, one of the largest in the nation.

The protesters blocked the entrance to the site, delaying people who were in line waiting to get their shots as it led to a long backup of cars. Some in the group of roughly 30 people waved signs with anti-mask and anti-vaccine messages.

The U-turn was publicly welcomed by Taoiseach Micheál Martin. But take a look at political and press reaction in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, and you'll see a lot of damage had already been done.
Yep. One doesn't have to be an analyst, bureaucrat or politician to see it.

That's a clever game of statistics and a political game of numbers. Largely for the benefit of those who will profit from those numbers...

As an unhealthy aside: I hope we are not running blindly into a fourth deadly wave from the placebo effect of early incomplete inoculations... Compounded into greater deadliness from placebo fuelled greedy politics.

Do any of the politicians follow Science and Medicine?

Also, everyone in our health service are being too long cruelly abused by the ongoing pandemic...

That all has consequences.

(Very glad I steered away from a medical career...)

Well the last reporting period saw the world's case total pass 103.9 million while deaths passed 2,247,000. :-(

Now for the latest position changes on the cases list.

El Salvador replaced Afghanistan in 94th spot, Sri Lanka slipped past Norway to claim 90th, Ghana displaced Latvia from 88th while Albania jumped over South Korea and Uzbekistan to land in 85th, Slovenia nudged Egypt from 62nd as Malaysia put in a mighty leap over Tunisia, the Dominican Republic and Bolivia to land in 52nd, Hungary took 38th from Saudi Arabia, Portugal moved past Belgium into 25th place and Chile dumped Romania out of 23rd.

In the top 30 on the death list Germany replaced Iran in 10th place while Portugal displaced Hungary from 28th and Pakistan knocked Sweden from 30th.

Well that's it for now, but there's sure to be more later.

I'm finding it harder and harder to work out what goes on inside people's minds.

US pharmacist in vaccine tampering guilty plea

Steven Brandenburg, 46, is accused of removing from cold storage 57 vials with 570 doses of the Moderna vaccine in Grafton, Wisconsin, in December. Without refrigeration, the vaccine becomes ineffective.
The pharmacist admitted that he "believed in various 'conspiracy theories'; subscribed to notions of "alternative history"; and was sceptical of vaccines in general and the Moderna vaccine specifically", the [state attorney's office] statement added.
How does somebody like that get through their medical training and get accredited by their professional body?
Wisconsin Vaccine Saboteur Steven Brandenburg Is a Flat-Earther, FBI Document Reveals.

Now that makes matters even worse. :-O

No worries, it's just the "we know best" nannies at work as usual.

That's a clever game of statistics and a political game of numbers...

So... Part of the numbers game is:

Oxford vaccine could substantially cut spread
wrote:
The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine ... was 76% effective during the three months after the first shot...

[Virus transmission] ... If there is no virus then they cannot spread it. In the study, the numbers testing positive halved in people once they had been given two doses of the vaccine...

... protection remained at 76% during the three months after the first dose. This rose to 82% after people were given the second dose...

... "The data definitely provide some evidence to suggest that the eventual protection from two doses of this vaccine are not worsened by having a longer than 28 or 42 day period between doses and tend to confirm what had been shown before, that if anything the eventual efficacy was better."

The really interesting part there is that the vaccine primes the immune system to eliminate all virus for about 50% of people after their second inoculation. That may well be enough to kill further continued spread of the pandemic...

However... Will our politicians ignore the scientific advice and simplistically play the numbers game of blindly adding up the percentage points?
