Worrying.
Covid: New Zealand reports first case in the community in months
New Zealand has reported its first case of Covid-19 outside of a quarantine facility in more than two months.

Health officials said a 56-year-old woman who had recently returned from Europe tested positive 10 days after completing a compulsory two-week period of managed isolation.

Will that convince the public to get serious about the continuing ongoing COVID pandemic to at long last get serious enough to put a stop to spreading it further?
Having to face crap like this - No.

Though not all the numbers are in as yet the last reporting period saw the world's total case tally pass 99.7 million along with over 2,138,300 deaths. :-(

Now it's time for the latest position changes in the case race.

Cameroon finally replaced Australia in 106th place while Zimbabwe passed Cyprus Mozambique passed both to claim 103rd, Estonia removed Uganda from 99th, Zambia kicked Finland out of 97th as Sri Lanka bumped Montenegro out of 92nd and Ghana passed Singapore, but Latvia jumped over both of them to land in 89th.

Nigeria nudged past Bosnia/Herzegovina to take 76th spot, Ethiopia snuck past Oman into 72nd as Slovenia jumped over both Palestine and Moldova to claim 64th, Egypt slipped past Kuwait into 62nd while Kazakhstan passed Lithuania, but Malaysia jumped over both to take over 58th, Bolivia and Tunisia passed Denmark to claim 53rd and 54th respectively.

Lebanon and the U.A.E. both passed Nepal to move into 42nd and 43rd respectively as Japan swept Hungary out of 38th, Pakistan took 30th spot from Bangladesh while Portugal blew Iraq out of 26th and Chile slid past Belgium into 24th.

Meanwhile Colombia became the 11th country to join the 2 million plus club while France became the 6th country to pass 3 million as the U.S. passed 25.7million infections, along with over 429,400 deaths, and is now less than 1.2 million cases away from passing the combined totals of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places. Here in Australia we've just clocked up our 9th day without a locally acquired case being reported and 29 days without a death.

In the death race Peru has taken 14th place from South Africa, but that's the only change in the top 30 there.

Anyhow that's enough for this update.

Merck discontinues two Covid-19 vaccine candidates
Pharmaceutical giant Merck* said Monday that it was discontinuing the development of its two Covid-19 vaccine candidates after early clinical trial data showed an "inferior" immune response.

Merck said in a statement posted on its website the decision to scrap the two vaccine candidates followed its review of findings from Phase 1 clinical studies. The studies showed that both candidates were generally well tolerated, but the immune responses were inferior to those seen following natural infection with Covid-19 and those reported for other Covid-19 vaccines.

While Donny's administration was in full denial of how bad COVID-19 was,

Deborah Birx, the former White House coronavirus coordinator, said Trump was fed 'parallel data' that she hadn't approved, which he then presented to the public.

Birx: No "full-time team" working on COVID in Trump White House.

Birx both exemplifies and blames the cherry-picking which shaped the Trump presidency.

Joe plans to fix that.

'Hard truths and important facts': Biden pushes for coronavirus testing reset with $50 billion plan.

President Joe Biden seeks to reset the nation’s inconsistent coronavirus testing efforts with a $50 billion plan and more federal oversight.

Biden’s plan calls for a newly created Pandemic Testing Board to coordinate a “clear, unified approach” to testing for COVID-19, a marked difference from the Trump administration’s policy of states establishing their own plans with federal support.

Laboratories have ramped up production to more than 2 million tests each day, but stubborn problems persist. Some labs struggle to complete timely tests – particularly when demand surges – because of shortages of critical supplies.

Public health labs largely are not equipped to detect new coronavirus variants such as ones first identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa. And there's debate among testing experts on whether wider use of cheaper but less sensitive rapid tests will be the smartest path out of the pandemic.

Biden issued a flurry of executive orders Thursday, from mask mandates on federal property to reopening schools and accelerating vaccine shipments. Fixing the nation’s disparate testing system "will be the most challenging" of all, said Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.
It's just a great shame that this wasn't done months ago.

Here in the UK, too many people STILL do not 'get the idea' of face masks, or of wearing them properly!

How many deaths do we need for people to realize?...

Ongoing, now, and still ongoing after nearly a year!

UK Covid deaths: Why the 100,000 toll is so bad

Unfortunately, the way the news and politics is going here in the UK, the deadly politics continue regardless of any scientific advice.

I offer the prophesy that we will see a fourth deadly wave and 'lockdown' before we enjoy the combined healthy effects of summertime and a wider rollout of multiple vaccines to a last subdue the pandemic here.

The question then is whether enough people will go to the effort of going for follow-up vaccinations to keep the Coronavirus quelled.

There is no doubt that the number of Covid-19 deaths in the UK is bad, but we cannot be sure that other countries are any better. Nearly every country uses a different method of defining what a Covid-19 death is and what isn't, and that goes even further as in the US as each state uses their own method.

Also the number of deaths, which are mainly in the older age brackets, so far, will also have an effect on the totals as those with a large population of old people will look to have many more deaths than those countries were the average age of the population is low. The average age of life expectation in all African countries is below 65.
In total, there have been 94,971 deaths involving COVID-19 registered in England and Wales since the start of the pandemic (up to 15 January 2021). Around 75% of these have occurred among people aged 75 years and over.

In a recent interview chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said: "The lesson is go earlier than you think you want to, go harder than you think you want to, and go a bit broader than you think you want to in terms of applying the restrictions."
Hindsight? Rubbish, they had history to teach them.
Unfortunately, the way the news and politics is going here in the UK, the deadly politics continue regardless of any scientific advice.
Not just the UK.
In response to the delays, the EU has said it might restrict exports of vaccines made in the bloc.
Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said companies making Covid vaccines in the bloc would have to "provide early notification whenever they want to export vaccines to third countries".
She said the 27-member EU bloc would "take any action required to protect its citizens".
EU playing games
I still say that it is a logistical nightmare with both supply & delivery issues. Here's a politician who forgets this fact.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, addressing the virtual version of the annual World Economic Forum (WEF), usually held in Davos, said: "Europe invested billions to help develop the world's first Covid-19 vaccines. And now, the companies must deliver. They must honour their obligations."
Something to think about.
Mr Soriot also said AstraZeneca was working on a vaccine with Oxford University that would target the South African variant of the coronavirus.
Scientists have warned there is a chance the South African variant may harm the effectiveness of current vaccines.

Since my last update the world has now passed 100.8 million cases along with passing 2,165,000 deaths. :-(

The U.S. accounts for over a quarter of those infections passing 26 million, while now being just over a million cases away from the combined totals of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th placed countries, and over a fifth of those deaths with over 435,450 being reported there (I hope that Joe can arrest the madness that Trump caused). There are now only 2 states over there (Hawaii and Vermont) that have recorded less cases than here in Australia and 6 states (New Hampshire, Wyoming, Maine, Hawaii, Alaska and Vermont) as well as the District Of Columbia that have recorded less deaths, but when both sets of numbers are combined they surpass us. :-O

Now for the update on place changes in the world's case chart.

Mozambique kicked Namibia from 102nd place, Sri Lanka swept Singapore from 91st while both Ghana and Latvia passed Norway to claim 88th and 89th respectively, Bahrain nudged Kenya out of 80th (a both passed 100,000 cases) as Malaysia booted Ireland out of 57th and Tunisia became the 54th country to pass 200,000 infections.

Croatia slipped past Azerbaijan to take 49th place while Japan blew Saudi Arabia out of 37th and Chile became the 24th country to pass 700,000 cases as Indonesia became the 19th country to pass 1 million.

Meanwhile here down under we've just clocked up 11 days without a locally acquired case being recorded and 31 days without a death.

Government did all it could
The UK government sought to do "all we possibly could to shield people and to help the country through this period", Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick says, as he defends its handling of the Covid pandemic.
Asked by BBC Radio 4's Today programme whether some of the country's 100,000 deaths were avoidable, Jenrick says: "I'm sure that we could or would have done some things differently with the benefit of hindsight, almost certainly.

"But there wasn't a textbook. I was in many of those meetings with the prime minister and the health secretary and members of the cabinet and I can give you this assurance, that on each occasion they took the best possible scientific and medical advice, they took their responsibilities extremely seriously."
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, he admits that "when we look back" on the coronavirus pandemic he is "sure" there are "lessons to be learned" adding he regrets the early restrictions on people attending funerals.
But he says he is "proud" of how the government has "looked after the most vulnerable in society like the homeless and the shielded".
Litany of Errors
A “litany of errors” by the government led to the UK reaching 100,000 coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, Labour’s shadow health secretary says.
"I am really sorry to say this but I don't believe the prime minister and the government did do everything we could do. We have had mistakes, we have had a litany of errors, we didn't have to be in this situation today,” Jonathan Ashworth tells BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

He acknowledges "this is a completely difficult, extraordinary situation" but adds "other countries are not dealing with these huge levels of deaths that we are" and that a lack of financial support has meant people are not able to quarantine when they have coronavirus.
He blames the PM for being too lenient with coronavirus measures, adding: "He likes to deliver good news, he doesn't like to disappoint people... but the reality is that a lot of the time you should just be straight with people."
The biggest of which was the failure to establish a total lockdown once it became a pandemic.

Have already mentioned how effective the security lockdown in WWII was & the same standard should have been applied to the pandemic.
Probably too many in authority though that untenable due to civil rights. Well...

What is more surprising is why didn't the world follow Australia in dealing with pandemics - it's not as if there was no data.
Back in the 1918 pandemic, there were still infections but the actions taken prevented many more thereby saving many lives.
A scientist from SAGE has predicted that we will suffer a further 40/50,000 deaths before it burns out.

There is another thing to consider - during WWII there was an all too visible enemy, but just now the "enemy" is much less visible so a fair number of people assume that since they what can't be seen won't hurt them. Thus we get the stupid gatherings for <insert excuse for a party> with tens if not hundreds of people who decide to ignore the advice/law in just about every country around the world.
