A rare bit of good news in these troubled times.

US arms maker ends production of controversial depleted uranium rounds

The maker of a controversial depleted uranium weapon used by the US Army has said that it is ceasing production.

Depleted uranium (DU) is an extremely strong and dense metal that is able to pierce armoured vehicles, making it the prime choice as the chief anti-tank ammunition used by the M1 Abrams, the US Army’s main battle tank. However, it is toxic and radioactive, and campaigners linking DU to cancer and other health issues have long called for it to be phased out.

That may now happen. During a quarterly earnings call on 27 January, Kathy Warden, the CEO of defence company Northrop Grumman, unexpectedly announced that it will stop producing the M829A4 DU round within a year.

“We are looking to the future and the decision to cease production boils down to sustainability,” Jarrod Krull of Northrop Grumman told New Scientist. He declined to explain further, but said the decision wasn’t made for financial reasons.

The DU component used in the anti-tank round is produced for Northrop Grumman by another firm, Aerojet Rocketdyne, and it is unclear if it will continue to do so – the US Army put out a request for an alternative supplier in January. A spokesperson for Aerojet Rocketdyne declined to confirm either way, saying: “We support the US military with cutting-edge, armour-piercing technology that protects our forces.”

Only the UK and US have acknowledged using DU rounds in action, but other nations, such as Russia, have them. Some have long renounced them – Belgium banned fielding, manufacturing and investment in DU weaponry in 2009.

The shift away from DU appears to be the result of a gradual change in the political climate. “Generally, the battle to stigmatise depleted uranium has been won,” says Doug Weir at the Conflict and Environment Observatory, a UK non-profit organisation.

Weir also notes a diplomatic row, revealed by Wikileaks, over US tanks using depleted uranium rounds on firing ranges in Kuwait in 2009. The site required a clean-up after radiation levels were found to be “significantly higher” than acceptable.

The scientific consensus is that the risk to surrounding populations from DU is low, but Weir says the weapons now appear to be in a category with cluster bombs and land mines as being unacceptable for some investors.

“Weapons are banned or fall out of favour when they are stigmatised,” he says. “Because of its nature, depleted uranium was always self-stigmatising to some extent, but national bans and UN resolutions have helped underline its unacceptability and Western militaries are moving away from it.”
"The decision wasn’t made for financial reasons".

My guess on that is that DU is what comes out of the other spout when you're enriching uranium - U235 to the right, U238 to the left. An unwanted by-product that would otherwise go to waste. So maybe the US is possibly cutting back on enriched uranium technologies?

The original article comes from the UK's 'New Scientist' magazine - vol 253, issue 3374, dated 19 February 2022. I'll give the link for confirmation, but you won't get far beyond the paywall. https://www.newscientist.com/article/2307521-us-arms-maker-ends-production-of-controversial-depleted-uranium-rounds/

I love the A-10 Thunderbolt aka "Wart Hog" which uses the depleted uranium round. If Ukraine were in NATO I would detach a few squadrons of them and have them make junk of all the vehicles and copters all nicely lined up. i would do it first before fighter jet air cover could be put in place.

So do I [for all known reasons] but have you taken the bait. I would think Putin has more than adequate surface to air defenses similar to the 'Iron Dome' that would defeat A-10s easily. And I bet dimes to dollars he is just waiting for such a response. It will be a 'rock, scissors, paper responses from both sides. Yes they would get a few to start but I would think a large contingency coming in would trigger a nuclear response.

7 in 10 Americans polled support ban on Russian oil even if higher prices result.

At least 70% of Americans do have some idea on what's going on. ;-)

Yes, double standards are really showing now.

Abbas slams West's 'double standards' on Ukraine, Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas criticised Sunday the West's "double standards" that he said penalised Russia over its invasion of Ukraine while ignoring Israel's "crimes" against the Palestinians.

Abbas voiced his frustration to visiting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a press briefing with reporters at the Palestinian presidential residence in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.

"The current events in Europe have shown blatant double standards," he told Blinken.

"Despite the crimes of the Israeli occupation that amounted to ethnic cleansing and racial discrimination... we find no one who is holding Israel responsible for behaving as a state above the law," he said.

Blinken held talks with Abbas on the first full day of a trip that includes a meeting with the foreign ministers of Israel and four Arab countries that have normalised relations with the Jewish state.

Blinken told Abbas he wanted to revitalise US relations with the Palestinians after they collapsed under the administration of former president Donald Trump.....
It's about time for the U.S. to rain in Israel's ambitions and stop pandering to them so that Palestinian lands can be handed back to their proper owners from the thieves.

Surfside collapse: Florida judge approves $83 million settlement for victims' families and owners in Champlain Towers South collapse.

A Florida judge approved an $83 million settlement Wednesday for former condo owners and heirs of those killed last year when the Champlain Towers South residential building in Surfside partially collapsed.

The compromise settlement was originally agreed upon in February, the Miami Herald reported. Nearly $50 million of the settlement would come from a payout from the condo association's insurance carrier while the remaining $33 million would come from the sale of the property where the building once stood, the Herald reported. The opening bid for the property stands at $120 million, the newspaper said.

The settlement comes less than a year after a portion of the condo building collapsed in the middle of the night on June 24 as many residents slept, killing 98 people. The victims ranged from 1 to 92 years old.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman approved the multimillion-dollar settlement after listening to emotional testimony that brought him to tears multiple times.

"Everybody in this case is a victim, there is no question about that," Hanzman said before giving his final approval. "Please know that this court is not diminishing in any respect your pain and suffering and trauma you have suffered ... we have 98 people who lost their lives, and this case has to be kept in perspective."

The heirs of the 98 victims were classified as the wrongful death class during the hearing and the surviving condominium owners were referred to as the economic class. Attorneys for the Champlain Towers South Condominium Association were also involved in the settlement.

The court based its decision on the basis that the settlement was "fair, reasonable, and adequate," but due to some concerns, the judge announced two conditions he was adding to the agreement.

"Number one, this settlement is going to be contingent upon the real estate closing for at least $120 million dollars," Hanzman said. "And until and unless that happens there will not be one penny distributed to the condominium owners."

"Number two, I am not going to deduct insurance," he said, adding that he would instead deduct $750,000 off the top "which the court will use to partially compensate counsel ... and for the past expenses to maintain this property up to today."

In his statement following the testimony, Hanzman acknowledged the law and the judicial system would not be able to "alleviate the pain and suffering that these people are enduring."

Hanzman also praised the settlement and the attorneys, whom he said worked hard to establish it, saying the court did not wish "to let the perfect be the enemy of the good."....
At least that was done with quickly, but it should never have happened in the 1st place. :-(

The chancellor compared his feelings to those of film star Will Smith, who slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars after he mocked his wife.

BBC's "The One Show" had a surprise guest last night to discuss his latest film.
He ended the discussion with a superb punchline.
Dan Stevens sat on the sofa to discuss his latest drama based on the Watergate scandal.
Talking to Alex and Jermaine, Dan appeared to be describing his new film when he said:
What you’ve got is a criminal for a leader who is wrapped up in a messy war, embroiled in a stupid scandal and surrounded by ambitious idiots and really should resign...
… I’m sorry that’s the intro to Boris Johnson, I've just said the intro to Boris Johnson.

10/10 :-)

Well, BoJo has come up with a really really bad one this time....
Send illegals to a country a long way off to be "processed", at the UK tax payers' expense of course. The selected country is one with a resoundingly bad history of human rights - Rowanda (famed for genocides etc)

So he's sort of following our right wing Liberal government's policies is he? But just taking it 1 step further into insanity.

But with federal elections coming up next month out inglorious leader here has decided to finally release those poor refugees who have been treated worse than animals by his government over many many years in the hope that he may get a few votes out of doing what should've been done many years ago.

Now more court cases will begin which the tax payer will be paying for in the end and this government's policy has not only jammed up courts it has cost many millions of dollars already while not mentioning the human right abuses it has carried out in the process.
