Federal minimum for a server is $2.35/hr. Think about that for a second. Think about how the place must be making enough to pay $19.00/hr and benefits.

And the GOP wants to end unemployment so they can force you to work for $2.35/hr. You think maybe the customer is looking for a different owner? Is that why places are failing?

We really do need to move forwards to insist that ALL safety critical equipment that is in operation MUST comply with PRESENT DAY STANDARDS. Anything non-compliant with the standards today must be upgraded into compliance or be scrapped.

Utility rates in California are regulated. The total paid to the execs is order of magnitude less than the legal judgements.
The second problem is there is only one power line that goes by your house. There is only one gas pipe that goes by your house. They go bankrupt and you are dark and cold.
So what's your solution, have incompetent government run it?

For essential public services such as medical, power, local roads, telecoms, my solution is not to have greedy incompetents running such services...

Instead, can there be an independent charitable organization set up that is publicly reviewed?

As long as human beings are involved the above is impossible. Greed is hardwired into the brain as a survival strategy.

As to holding people responsible, when you hold management personally responsible some greedy low level will find a way to cut corners and make his numbers better so he gets a raise/promotion/bonus/profit share and he will also find a way to hide his shoddy corner cutting from internal controls. So now the people who understand the risks will refuse to take the job because they understand human nature and won't go to jail for other people, so that leaves the incompetent who don't understand the risks and greedy in charge.

........PG&E didn't have the money to trim trees......
