Don't the power companies forward buy gas/oil/coal so they have a decent buffer in stock against such events?

Most likely do, but when you have extremely cold temperatures of -2 F/-19C overnight, when normal overnight lows are about 43F/~+7C you burn through your reserve that much faster.

The electric generation companies in Texas 0were informed over one week before the storms to "get ready" , many failed to do that.

Growing up in the East End, one often heard a saying that made sense I suppose.
"Don't crap on your own doorstep".
Sadly, some people have their head stuck so far up where the sun don't shine that common sense fails them.
Sad

For some to ponder their own morals or WWJD.
https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/2/21/the-vaccine-debacle-shows-the-predatory-nature-of-capitalism
What the vaccine debacle tells us about predatory capitalism

The botched COVID-19 vaccination campaign is a great illustration of why our current capitalist system does not work.
...
As a recent article published in the leading medical journal The Lancet concludes, “new vaccines will mean little to individuals around the world if they are unable to get vaccinated in a timely manner”.
...
only a few of the world’s richest countries are expected to achieve herd immunity before the end of the summer. Meanwhile, new virus mutations continue to emerge, putting into question the effectiveness of existing vaccines.
...
Some have put the blame for the vaccine debacle on the cumbersome bureaucracy of governments and on anti-vaxxer sentiments. But the root of the problem lies elsewhere. It has to do with a dysfunctional global economic system propped up by three ideological myths: that the private sector is best at innovation; that unregulated markets are best at managing supply and demand; and that the outcome of globalisation is fair for all.
...
Myth one: The private sector is the best innovator

For decades, vaccines have been de-prioritised by the industry as insufficiently profitable.
...
The claim that private companies are best at innovation is further eroded by the fact that at least two state-owned companies, Russia’s Gamaleya Institute and China’s Sinopharm, were successful in developing effective vaccines.
...
Myth two: The invisible hand of the market is effective

Another capitalist myth is that competitive markets are the best regulators of supply and demand and the best at achieving the optimal distribution of goods. In early 2020, we witnessed the dark side of this fable, as countries started to outbid each other for vital medical equipment, such as PPE and ventilators.

Demand was high across the board, but supply only went to the wealthy few, at the price of many human lives
...
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called it “vaccine nationalism”, but what it really is is vaccine capitalism. Countries are rushing to outbid each other on vaccines because there is an inadequate supply, and there is inadequate supply because pharmaceutical companies are allowed not to share their inventions with the world.
...
Myth three: Capitalist globalisation is fair

The third key myth of late-stage capitalism that is now unravelling portrays globalisation as equally beneficial for all. But a cursory look at the global distribution of vaccines shows that this is far not the case.

As Western countries are able to acquire vaccines, albeit at different pace, many other parts of the world have not even started their vaccination campaigns. Even emerging economies – some of which served as the testing ground for the vaccines – are struggling with limited supply.

As a result of this global inequality in vaccine distribution, we are not only facing what WHO Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus has called a “catastrophic moral failure”, but also an inevitable global economic disaster. Economists are already warning that an uneven global vaccine roll-out would be much costlier for wealthy countries than a coordinated deployment of vaccines.

If the current immunisation inequality persists, the deployment of vaccines in wealthier countries can become close to useless. Even if herd immunity is achieved in some countries, persistent outbreaks in others will continue to disrupt travel and global supply chains. One study suggests that if there is no serious global effort for an equitable vaccination campaign, this could cost developed countries $4.5 trillion.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called it “vaccine nationalism”, but what it really is is vaccine capitalism. Countries are rushing to outbid each other on vaccines because there is an inadequate supply, and there is inadequate supply because pharmaceutical companies are allowed not to share their inventions with the world

Although parts of that para maybe true, there is evidence that shows it in some cases it is problems of production and a shortage of supplies that are the cause of this apparent inadequate supply.
https://globalnews.ca/news/7636798/pfizer-moderna-vaccine-ingredients/
https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/comment/covid-19-vaccine-manufacturing-disruptions/
And so far only about 100 million vaccinations have been administered only about 1.3% of the world population. If the vaccinations were spread equally around the world we wouldn't even notice and we would be in permanent lock-down until production rates can be increased beyond the 0.5%/month delivery rate we are now seeing.

If we were to deliver vaccines to the most vulnerable first, the over 80's, then the vaccines would still be very much as they are at the moment. Because in a lot of the world not many people reach that age, i.e. the average life expectancy in Africa is below 65. In Russia life expectancy is about 70.

Another point that I have not seen elsewhere on the Internet (to date that is), is Germany's actions over the vaccines.
Due to their past history, it is in their constitution that their armed forces are not to fight on foreign soil.
Nice of them.
However, nothing is in that constitution in preventing vaccines to the elderly.

IMHO:

Worse than that. I see that as showing a very bad inherent attitude that those creatures in his care are seen by him as mere business items rather than as living feeling animals.

His approach seen there is the sort of thing that you see from such as a motor vehicle driver when broken down at the roadside...

Also, why might such an athletic creature suffer a heart attack?... Being run too hard too long on too hot a day and without water or rest?...

What?... As in?:

The photo-taker is in error?

Or that the photo has 'leaked out'?

Yep, I'm a total comedy of errors. Humanly so. Even more so with added beer.

However, there are some types of 'error' that someone inherently just will not do due to innate values. To my personal view, that photo example suggests there is a lack of certain values suggesting that there may well be mistreatment...

Now, if that was a scene of someone sat on a stack of old tires whilst waiting for them to be picked up, then there would be no concern. However, this example is not for a pile of old tires...

No wonder fake news is so prominent these days.
Suggestions are not evidence.

We have non-faked photo evidence there. The circumstances have also been admitted to. There's even the admission that the circumstances "look bad"...

We also have good expectations for how 'normal' people act in various circumstances.

Actions are indeed very suggestive.

I feel there will be more to that story...

Why an old photo would be leaked now and who took it remain questions for an inquiry by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board.

Thanks. Have bookmarked it & will listen to it later today.
The report I linked states 50 years ago.
Don't think I came across those signs in the 70's much.
However, it was still a predominant attitude in schools & workplaces, sadly.
