CD Marketing and Pre-emphasis... The shape and feel and look and playing-time of the CD was very much shaped by Marketing... Also, my suspicions were that pre-emphasis was included, despite digital not suffering anything of the noise that such as vinyl or tape suffered, as some sort of gimmick to make the CDs sound 'special'. The effect of pre-emphasis is that the music sounds 'sharper' and 'brighter'. However, without suitable bass, that can also sound distractingly 'tinny'. Works well for "Boom boxes"?... However, see these explanations: hydrogenaudio - Pre-emphasis Archimago's Musings - HOW-TO: CD Pre-Emphasis & Using SoX De-Emphasis. (And the decline of physical media with vinyl revenue > CD now.) So really? 'Just' an 'innocent' feature to overcome the limitations of the decode circuitry in early CD players?... ... Possibly so... However, I remember that the early CDs that I bought very much featured showing off their higher dynamic range and 'clarity'... Sometimes far too far... Enjoy! Yet again the use of a hyphen by the admiral gets us all fed and watered on his account. Carbon 14 or carbon-14 does not have the number part spelled. I reiterate, if you want to refer to carbon 14 (or similar names) then you a choice of two words "carbon" and "fourteen", either of which is acceptable. 14C is not a short form for carbon 14, but is one of the short forms of "14 Celsius", thus you would have some explaining to do trying to link a temperature with radioactive decay and the like. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

One last try. I wish you could use superscript in a post. Just how can one use one these in a post? Just read the first part of the first paragraph please. Carbon-14 |

Two things, I prefer my somewhat battered due to use copy of the IUPAC nomenclature rules (a somewhat weighty volume) over Wikipedia when it comes to the correct naming of elements and compounds. Second, you didn't look very hard for the superscript tag, it works pretty well. Remember, the nomenclature relies on case and subscript & subscript to work, and numbers are written as Latin numerals, and do not have the same meaning as "the same" number spelled out, or written as Roman numerals - all great fun. Brilliant connection there Gary. Take a hyphenated phrase, loose one word, and post the remaining word to leave the rest of us scratching our heads where the link is :-) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Brilliant connection there Gary. I made the connection immediately. But I worked a couple of blocks from that building back when I was a law clerk. |
