New York AG Letitia James really, really wants Donald Trump to unlock his two-dozen file cabinets in Trump Tower.

Trump's lawyers will go head-to-head with some of his potential prosecutors on Thursday over their demands that Trump, his daughter Ivanka, and his son Donald Jr. sit for depositions in an ongoing New York state civil probe.

But the two sides will also battle over a vast trove of paperwork the former president has refused to turn over.

According to sources and recent court filings, investigators' sights are set on two dozen beige, metal file cabinets in the former president's Trump Tower headquarters on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

The cabinets line a back wall of the skyscraper's 26th floor, where Trump has his executive offices.

Given the former president's reportedly heedless way with documents, New York Attorney General Letitia James appears particularly eager to secure their contents.

"They go back decades," one source told Insider of the 26th floor's stash.

"That's just some of it," said the source, who described potential evidence on condition of anonymity.

Still more Trump Organization file cabinets are located on other floors, the source added; additional files that are no longer active are stored in an off-site facility....

Trump accountants say financial reports unreliable

Donald Trump's accounting firm has cut ties with the former president and said a decade of financial reports should "no longer be relied upon".

The firm, Mazars, said in a letter to the Trump Organization that it could not stand behind statements it had prepared for Mr Trump from 2011-20.

But Mazars said it had not concluded they contained material discrepancies.

The letter was revealed in a court filing as part of a fraud investigation into the Trump Organization.

Breaking News: Trump and his children may be deposed by New York attorney general, judge rules.

Former President Donald Trump, as well his children Ivanka and Donald Jr., must sit for depositions in the New York attorney general's civil investigation of their business practices, a New York judge ruled Thursday.

New York Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron issued his ruling the same day that he held a contentious two-hour hearing over the matter. The Trumps were seeking to quash the subpoenas from Attorney General Letitia James, while she was asking the court to order them to comply.

On several occasions throughout the hearing, the judge expressed skepticism toward the Trumps' arguments that sitting for testimony in the civil investigation would undermine their constitutional rights.

During Thursday's hearing, Trump's lawyers indicated they would appeal an unfavorable decision.

The New York attorney general is looking at whether Trump misled lenders, insurers or others in his and his business' financial statements. Already, James has alleged numerous "misleading statements and omissions" in tax submissions and financial statements used to obtain loans.

James asked the court to compel compliance with her subpoenas, which also include a request for certain records that she said Trump hasn't handed over.

Yet another loss for the world's greatest loser (and his family), but there'll be more to come.
