I always compared political parties to cable packages: you end up getting and paying dearly for a lot of what you don't want to get the little and relatively inexpensive thing that you do want. So if you want the Social Programs channel to watch your favorite social programs, you need to bundle it with the Crime Out of Control channel where all major cities are all-crime-all-the-time , and the Housing Costs Outta Control channel where the people who run things try to pretend they've never heard of "supply and demand" and the... well, you get the picture, but not in HD unless you want to pay an extra $9.99 per month.

Similarly, if you want the Fiscal Responsibility network, you need to pay for the Church in State channel where it's all-Bible-all-the-time, in your government and your bedroom and your bong and your marriage and "your" uterus, and also BSN (formerly the History Channel) aka the Out-Liar Outliers, where the more ridiculous the story, the more votes it gets.

Someday someone will figure out that we can have the best of these without the excess and in many cases unrelated baggage. The "centrists" have tried and not really succeeded but it's worth working at. Incidentally, compared to (most of) the rest of the world, the US Democrats are considered much closer to the "centre" than may care to be admitted, rather than the "left".
