Another leap in repopulating a once endangered species.

Woylies release beyond predator fence marks bold jump for species in outback WA.

Conservationists say the release of more than 100 woylies beyond the safety of a predator fence is a big, if bold, step towards repopulating the endangered species in Western Australia's remote Wheatbelt.

The animals were released "beyond the fence" at Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary, 350 kilometres north of Perth, last week, following several decades of work to restore the population in the protected area.

Once found across mainland Australia, the population of woylies — or brush-tailed bettongs — fell by almost 90 per cent due to land clearing and invasive species brought about by European settlement.

In the Wheatbelt, the local population was believed to be extinct for more than 100 years.......

.......The population at Mt Gibson has grown to more than 1,000 animals from the 162 introduced in 2016....

.....A number of woylies have also climbed the sanctuary's 2-metre fence in recent years, kick-starting the repopulation by themselves.

"We see them on the camera traps with females with large pouches carrying young and young at heel," Dr O'Neill said.

"The young are growing up and surviving on the outside."

Forty of the woylies were fitted with radio collars so that ecologists could track their movements outside the fence.

Cheers.

What happened to the inhabitants of the Wasp nest?
Report says radioactive wasp nest was found near South Carolina nuclear facility
AIKEN, S.C. (WCBD) – A radioactive wasp nest was recently found in South Carolina, according to a report from the Department of Energy.

The report says Radiological Control Operations at the Savannah River Site discovered a wasp nest near the nuclear facility on July 3.

The nest was probed, and according to the report, teams discovered the contamination level was greater than 10 times the total contamination values allowed in federal regulations.

The nest was sprayed to kill any wasps.

According to the report, the nest is considered an onsite contamination and not related to a loss of contamination control. It also said there was no contamination in the surrounding area.

“Per procedure, the nest was sprayed, and the nest was surveyed for contamination. While no wasps were found on the nest, the individual insects would have significantly lower levels of contamination,” a spokesperson with the Savannah River Site said in a statement to Nexstar’s WCBD.

The spokesperson added that once the contaminated nest was discovered, the immediate area was secured and surveyed. “No contamination was found in the area. There were no impacts to workers, the environment, or the public.”

WCBD has reached out to the Department of Energy for additional information.

It’s not the nest in general. But how the contaminants were released for the wasps to collect to begin with?

Is it just my imagination or are most insects on the large size down under?

An Alligator walks up to a bar..
Stuart police 'arrest' gator that crashes party at Stuart tiki bar
STUART, FL— Even gators get thirsty, so this Florida native headed to a tiki bar.

A curious, 4-foot alligator was spying on guests at Hudson's on the River, a local tiki bar at 351 SW Flagler Ave., from some dense vegetation — after it was shooed away from the bar area. It seemed to have wandered in around 2:30 p.m. Oct. 6., according to officers who responded to a call from an employee.

Raccoon goes on drunken rampage in Virginia liquor store and passes out on bathroom floor
ASHLAND, Va. (AP) — The masked burglar broke into the closed Virginia liquor store early on Saturday and hit the bottom shelf, where the scotch and whisky were stored. The bandit was something of a nocturnal menace: bottles were smashed, a ceiling tile collapsed and alcohol pooled on the floor.

The suspect acted like an animal because, in fact, he’s a raccoon.

On Saturday morning, an employee at the Ashland, Virginia-area liquor store found the trash panda passed out on the bathroom floor at the end of his drunken escapade.

“I personally like raccoons,” said Samantha Martin, an officer who works at the local animal control. “They are funny little critters. He fell through one of the ceiling tiles and went on a full-blown rampage, drinking everything.”

Martin said she took the raccoon back to the animal shelter, though she had her fair share of giggles along the way.

“Another day in the life of an animal control officer, I guess,” she said.

The Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter commended Martin for handling the break-in, and confirmed the raccoon had sobered up.

“After a few hours of sleep and zero signs of injury (other than maybe a hangover and poor life choices), he was safely released back to the wild, hopefully having learned that breaking and entering is not the answer,” the agency said.

This is just a test.

I passed.

I suddenly lost access to the domain I use to host my sig file image. Some of you might remember I've had trouble seeing my sig image here when I post. This has been going on for a long time. Suddenly I couldn't access the domain zannpix.com at all. It was, for some crazy, unknown reason, sending me to something that apparently belongs to AMTRAK. So I contacted my host company (dotster) and they, eventually, got everything back to normal. First they invited me to pay a few hundred dollars for something I don't want or need. I just wanted - for free - what I was getting for free a short time ago. (Well, not for free. I pay a monthly hosting charge.) Now I can see, again, all the things that I used to be able to see, including my sig file image, the LLAP space raccoon. YAY.

While the people are away the pets make themselves at home.

Pet cam captures bull and horse sneaking into home of NT politician Andrew Mackay.

Two dogs open a living room door and allow in a bull and a horse.

That is the very real scenario one NT politician faced at his home in Darwin's rural area.

Country Liberal Party MLA Andrew Mackay posted the video from a pet camera to social media, capturing his animals horsing around inside his home.

Mr Mackay, the member of Goyder, was in town having dinner with a friend, and had pulled up his pet cam to show off his snake enclosure, when something unexpected caught his eye.....

UK tourist handles blue-ringed octopus before video goes viral
wrote:
“Turns out that it was a blue-ringed octopus, instantly recognisable to Aussies & others as the world’s first / second / third most venomous animal,” he wrote.

At four to six centimetres long, the sea creature’s small size means bites are often tiny and painless at first – but the venom is capable of causing respiratory arrest, heart failure, blindness, paralysis and eventually death from suffocation.

The octopus contains enough venom to kill 26 adults within minutes.

Rule of thumb here for sea creatures is if it's blue or has blue markings leave it alone.

Bluebottles/Portuguese man o' wars and blue sea slugs are other sea creatures that silly tourists want to pick up here as well.

This list should help some on both land and in the sea.

I don't think that these are blue, or have significant blue markings, but where do the (in)famous "Ooo Arrgh" spider live on the scale of dangerous "animals"?

Rats wrestle over bagel at NYC subway station
Video in article!
Two rats put on a wrestling show at a New York City subway station on Tuesday, December 16, when they started fighting on the tracks over a bagel. Footage captured by Storyful journalist Rob McDonagh at Essex Station, in the Lower East Side, shows the rodents scuffling over half of a bagel for more than three minutes. The winner of the fight remained a mystery as a subway arrived while the wrestling match was still ongoing, blocking the view.
