Shut your beak: Angry greenfinch picks a fight with the wrong bird

A bully greenfinch was beaten at its own game after squaring up to a smaller bird.

A dunnock was perched peacefully on a branch before the finch approached and tried to pick a fight.

As the finch tried to peck at its rival, the small brown bird used its foot to slam its mouth shut.

One Great White that was really upset by the whine of an outboard disturbing its afternoon snooze. I can't say I blame the shark as sometimes I've longed to take action against such noise generators.

Somewhere in the (un)known Universe?

Five black bears were hibernating under a home for months. The home's occupant had no idea.

One South Lake Tahoe,California, renter had some unknown house guests living underneath their house.
For months the renter, who chooses to remain anonymous, had heard occasional noises like that of purring beneath the floorboards, but thought nothing of it.
They asked neighbors if they were hearing the same noise, but everything was quiet on their end.
Finally this week, more rumblings prompted them to believe those noises could have been a bear. That's when they called the BEAR League, a non profit group that works to keep bears in the area safe, to check out the house.

What they discovered underneath were five black bears: a mama and four cubs....

They have a treatment (anti-venom) for that. I think they might even have a vaccine, since they have one for dogs. Why wouldn't they have one for humans? I don't believe this guy had to die, although he may have deserved it for f*cking with rattlesnakes.

I have never liked the rattlesnake roundups. To me the whole thing is a cruel example of human behavior.

If rattlesnakes need to be relocated away from population centers, I can understand that, but searching out hundreds of rattlesnakes for the purpose of entertaining people and ultimately killing them for skins and food is just wrong.

One interesting bit of reverse evolution has been observed in rattlesnake roundups. Rattlesnakes rattle as a means to warn away potential threats. When rattlesnake hunters are searching for them, they count on the ones that rattle to more easily catch them, but the ones that don't rattle, successfully breed, hence reducing the population that do rattle.

.....The breeding programme saw penguins at the park pair up "year after year", however it was "not always opposite sex couples" that incubated the eggs and nurtured the chicks, Ms Graham said.

She said there were a number of successful parenting pairs among the park's 23 adult penguins, including "one couple that are two boys and they're actually one of our best parents".

"We always give them a second egg from one of our other couples or a chick... this will be their fourth year being two dads," she added.

There was "nothing better" for the keepers to see than the chicks reaching adulthood, she said, adding: "You never lose your enthusiasm for that."

Unfortunately, we (Americans) have adopted emus for their meat and feathers. So it most probably was not an Aussie.

Kevin is a girl's name, too, although not common as such. I knew a woman named Kevin in 1973.
