Bad news on saving a critter, but it may turn out to be good in the end.

Researchers probe mass deaths of 'bum-breathing' Mary River turtle babies.

Through the gaping mouth of a fork-tailed catfish, you can spot the tail of an undigested bream, swallowed whole.

Are supersized specimens of the native catfish derailing decades of community and scientific efforts to save precious "bum-breathing" endangered Mary River turtle hatchlings?.....

A friend of a friend sent Hazard a photo of Bear having the time of his life at Finks Bar - a mile from home.

'They took good care of him, and I guess he was pretty popular,' Hazard said.

They didn't expect that.

Oldest-known wild platypus gives new insights into longevity of enigmatic Australian species.

Gemma Snowball didn't make too much of the tag on the platypus pulled from a Melbourne creek last autumn.

Melbourne Water had been backing surveys of the city's platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) populations since the 1990s so a tag was not unusual.

Stamped "01F6-03FF", all the zoologists for Ecology Australia knew was the male had been captured before.

"I didn't know the significance of the platypus age until a few days after when checking the data and talking to other biologists," she said.

"I was quite shocked and excited when I found out."

The tag dated all the way back to late 2000 when the male specimen from Monbulk Creek, one of 10 distinct Melbourne platypus populations, was estimated to be just over a year old.

He was bagged, measured and weighed a second time late last year in another platypus survey.

Ms Snowball and her colleagues calculated the duck-billed buck was about 24 years old, according to a study published in Australian Mammalogy.

That's a new record for a wild platypus.

It is three years older than another Victorian male and a female from the Shoalhaven River in New South Wales.

A previous long-term study of Melbourne platypuses found about 25 per cent of captured animals were older than nine, 36 per cent were six to eight and 40 per cent were three to five years old.....

Man finds baby eastern brown snake caught by redback spider's web at Beachport.


....Eastern brown snakes may be one of Australia's most venomous reptiles, but Peter Marchal says it is not the first time he has seen a redback spider triumph against one.

Mr Marchal came across a juvenile eastern brown snake entangled in a redback's web in one of his sheds at his Beachport property, in South Australia's south-east, on Friday afternoon.

He said the hatchling was small but estimated it was about 20 centimetres long.

"I think it was still alive but it was slowly dying," he said.

"The snake wasn't moving, the spider was having a great time."....

Banker tells the Star Telegram, “They love attention and they love jumping up on things. So therefore it works good with yoga position.” The smaller the goat, the better. Banker specifies that baby goats are used exclusively for goat yoga.

Newly discovered Australian beetle almost mistaken for bird poo

What's red, black, and hairy all over? A new species of bug discovered in Australia, dubbed by some as a "punk beetle" for its shaggy white locks.

A Queensland researcher spotted the fluffy specimen by chance while camping and initially mistook it for bird poo.
"It's very unique. There are not many insects out there that have that trait," James Tweed told the BBC.
The national science agency CSIRO has since confirmed it's an entirely new family of longhorn beetle.
When Mr Tweed first spotted a tiny white object on a leaf in the Gold Coast hinterland in December 2021, he didn't think much of it.
But after the entomologist did a double take, he realised it was in fact an insect unlike any he'd seen before.
"It's about one centimetre long... and covered in long, fluffy white hairs," he said.
"A lot of the hairs stand basically straight upright, and so it gives it a bit of a mohawk type look."

Rescued 'baby hedgehog' turns out to be a pom pom from a hat
A Cheshire, England, woman rescued what she believed to be an abandoned baby hedgehog and took it to a local animal hospital, where veterinarians told her she had actually rescued the pom pom from a beanie hat.
