I'm now the owner of 4 Intel Atom based netbooks or similar devices. The oldest is a Samsung NC10, which used to run various BOINC projects under Windows XP Home I recently upgraded it to to Puppy Linux 32bit. I also have an Acer Aspire One 533, which had Windows 7 when I got it. I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1010 which has hardware issues. The newest machine is an Acer SW5-014 running Windows 10. All 4 machines came with licensed copies of MS Windows. More to follow... |

The Puppy Linux support forums were hosted at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy Unfortunately the owner of this domain died recently. Many of the references are currently lost, although i believe some other community members are trying to get some of the support content re-hosted elsewhere. I didn't know about the loss of the support website when I chose to install Puppy, instead of a different distro of Linux. Can anyone recommend an easier route to take ? |

Take a look at Distrowatch for 32-bit distros? Hope you're not too spoilt for choice?! Aside: Yes, I can recommend Puppy Linux. Myself, on an old 32-bit system, I'm running Devuan GNU+Linux. Good luck, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Thanks Martin Did you know of John Murga ? Apparently he was an active member of the Linux development community. The missing status of his forums makes it difficult when I try to find an answer online, as many Google searches point to http://murga-linux.com One annoying thing that I'm trying to fix is the powerapplet_tray. It doesn't update correctly on my Samsung, or Acer One. I think others have experienced the same issue. I currently have one charger between 2 working netbooks. The Dell also appears to use the same charger, but it tries to power on for a few seconds, then shuts down. I'm concentrating on 2 working netbooks for now. I have managed to get the HDD out of the Dell Mini 10, and I have a USB drive caddy to try to recover data from it. |

OK, I've been concentrating on the Aspire One 533 for the last few days. I can boot Puppy 32bit successfully, with working sound and correct screen resolution. I can boot from HDD or USB. The CPU is 64bit capable, so I tried to install the 64bit version of Puppy, without much success. I have also downloaded 64bit Ubuntu 20.04 After countless install attempts, I eventually managed to get 800x600 screen resolution, and very quiet sounds. I originally tried to get Ubuntu running on the same drive as Puppy on different partitions, but something didn't want to play, so I eventually wiped all the partitions and did a clean install. It runs very slowly in 1gb RAM, and I haven't been able to get the correct display resolution. I subsequently wiped it again because of problems with the boot loader. I have heard of Lubuntu, and downloaded 2 different 64bit versions, but I am still having problems with creating a multi boot, or single boot installer on USB. I have about 6 or 7 different USB thumb drives and SD cards of various sizes from 1gb up to 64gb. My current problem is creating a Lubuntu boot USB from Puppy. I am probably missing something obvious, but I just need a way to create a single or preferably multi boot Linux USB boot drive under Linux I have used the YUMI creator from Windows 7, but I no longer have a working Win 7 system, I do have working Windows 10 and XP systems, and also several different Android tablets and phones. Any help please ? |

Rufus is the best USB boot creator in Windows. Balena Etcher is the best USB boot creator in Linux. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Thanks Keith. I have downloaded Etcher for 32bit Linux, I see that it's also available for Win First run I seem to be missing a dependency. At least I'm getting an error message, but the window is too small to see the complete message, with no way to enlarge it ! I'm going to look for a Log File, and also try to install again so that I am not missing dependencies. [Edit] I've tried putting the app and the image file in the same directory. Etcher loads, I select the ISO, select a writeable Flash Drive with enough space. Hit Flash, Starting... About 10 seconds later: Attention, Something went wrong... There are about 20 lines of error reports, but the popup window can't be expanded or the content copied ! At the end I just have Cancel or Retry buttons ! I can't find a logfile to copy, could I create one by running in Terminal or Console ? Getting late, Help please. |
