My initial reactions are a mixture of:
He's scared he's going to get stuffed and is trying to buy a few more votes;
He hasn't quite worked out how to rig the election so he wins;
He's doing a grab for "eternal power" by deferring the elections until either they are screwing the lid on his box or he can work out how to ensure he cannot loose.

Call me cynical, but I just don't trust him to do anything that won't inflate ego further and continue his grasp on power in the USA.

That's a case where relative population sizes should come into play.

America has a population of around 330 million, Australia 25 million - call it 13:1, in round figures.

The case figures are just below 100:1, and the death figures somewhat above 100:1 - even Trump should have an aide who can do that sort of math.

Yesterday, Britain's Office of National Statistics (a government body, but kept well away from political influence) published a detailed international comparison of the covid-19 story so far, normalising the results between countries (for Europe only).
