Has anyone else tried the TBar release of BOINC under the latest release of Ubuntu? I get errors for missing packages that can not be added as was in the case for 18.04: libwebkitgtk-1.0 and libcurl3. I tried boinc with libcurl4, but then complains about libssl.so.1.0.0.

are you trying his latest 7.16.5 release? if you're using an older package, you might want to try to re-download his latest one from the normal arkyn link. I know his manager from that one at least works, and our team version of the client works on 20.04. but I havent tried his 7.16.5 build of the boinc client. --edit-- I just tried and Tbar's 7.16.5 client works fine in 20.04, just the boinc manager has a long startup lag.

Tbar's latest: BOINC-AIO 7.16.5

but the problem with Tbar's boinc manager is that is has long startup lag for some reason in 20.04, but does not do this in 18.04. I was able to recompile a manager in 20.04 that solves this problem, but me and Juan are trying to get one made that will work for both 18 and 20.

We have a 20.04 version working but not runs on 18.04.
So now we are working in one who runs in both versions.
Hope we could have it working tonight.
If the beer allows.

I send you the link for the beta version of the manager who work in both Ubuntu 20.04 & 18.04

After we finish the tests we will ask Arkayn to UL to his site so anyone could use.

If anyone has hurry or wish to participate in the test PM. But be aware is late in the night here, and i'm drinking some deserved beers, just in case i not answer fast.

We finally tested and is working a fix for the long lag delay when the boincmgr starts on some Ubuntu 20.04 hosts.
This is not necessary on others Ubuntu version hosts.

I send the build to Arkayn so he could put in the same place the the Tbar AIO is hosted. Until he could add the fix to his own build.

Just a reminder.

We build the fix over the 7.17.0 boinc but works fine with the Tbar AIO supplied 7.16.5 builds.

Added compatibility to the manager with Ubuntu 20.04 & 18.04

To use it:

You need to check the dependencies (ldd boincmgr) to be sure all are meet or the build will not work.
At least you will now require the following packages as dependencies:
libwxgtk3.0-gtk3-0v5
libwxgtk-webview3.0-gtk3-0v5
but depending on your host configuration some others could be needed.

The build was made available in good faith, no guarantees at all. We tested in several host but if you use is at you own risk!

Rick, I also built a version of boincmgr specifically for 20.04 with wxWidgets statically linked so you should not need any dependencies met, but this will only work on 20.04 and is not backwards compatible. it wont work on anything before 20.04 (maybe would work on Ubuntu 19, I haven't tried, but for sure wont work on Ubuntu 18.04). This fixes the issue that Tbar's boincmgr has with a long startup lag on 20.04.

try if you like. let me know if it does not work. remember this is boincmgr only. use with your existing boic client, tbar's works or the one from Juan.

I have updated the link with a new version of boincmgr.

works with all Ubuntu 18.04-20.04 with no startup lag. includes wxWidgets statically linked so should be no dependencies (but no guarantees ;) )

Hmmm, long startup lag? I startup maybe once a week. My version 16.5 Doesn't require any Dependencies in 18.04 through 20.04. It's basically just what is needed for most people, expand it to the Home folder, open the BOINC folder, and double click boincmgr. I see nothing to "fix". It works perfectly fine, and I've been running it for Weeks with the previous versions of 20.04 without any problems, http://www.arkayn.us/lunatics/BOINC.7z

It seems to be working very well with the current number 7, 14, and 20 computers at Einstein, https://einsteinathome.org/community/stats/hosts .
The only question is how many GPUs will be needed to move my top machine to #3 at Einstein....

Keith confirmed the startup lag behavior in his install of 20.04 as well. it only happens in 20.04, doesn't happen in 18.04. I can't say for 19, I don't use short term releases. I also can't say what behavior is like for the 20.04 beta release. I'm only talking about the official 20.04 release.

my version works in all 18.04 and 20.04, also doesn't require additional dependencies, but does not have the startup lag problem in 20.04 that yours does.

true it's not a major issue, but it's there nonetheless, it takes so long to start that it makes you think it's not working at all, 20+ seconds.

Sounds to me you're repeating the WoW fiasco. I'd suggest you Stop trying to degrade other peoples work. The thing works fine.

maybe you should install the official release and see for yourself? maybe you think Keith is in on this conspiracy? I'm only reporting my observations, and took the initiative to try to fix it.

"works fine" is subjective. it "works", yes.

don't be so sensitive, it's not a personal attack.

This IS the latest release, https://einsteinathome.org/host/12820885
It takes about 15 seconds to launch, that will Probably be shorter in a future update. Just as other things are fixed with new releases. It's definitely not worth breaking something that has worked for months.
Since driver 440.64 is installed with the OS, it's even easier than before. You can skip having to install a driver. Just install the OS, expand the AIO BOINC, and double click boincmgr.

Out of curiosity:

Any idea what the startup delay was caused by? And how long a delay?

What was the fix?

And good work putting the customisation together!

no idea what causes the delay, something in Tbar's compile environment I guess. I only know that my version does not have it. 15+ seconds is crazy for boincmgr to launch, it should be immediate. there's no reason it should take that long other than there being some kind of bug or incompatibility present. I didn't do anything special when I made mine, just followed the normal steps to compile it from a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04.4

juan had the same problem when he compiled it with wxwidgets statically linked, and I know he uses Ubuntu 18.04 also, so I really don't know.

go ahead and try mine and tell me if it's broken or has the lag. but I know your pride won't allow you to do that ;)

there's obviously *something* going on for it to have a delay on one OS but not another. and obviously something *not* going on with mine.

Just a random guess...

That sounds typical of a network lookup timeout.

Is there some confusion for an expected localhost name or for some other hostname lookup? Or is there a missing yet expected IP address connection?...

I could confirm that. But something must be tell. The delay does not appears on my 18-04 .
I worked using with Tbar boincmgr with no problems and no start up measurable delay for a long time.
Apparently that startup lag only happening on the 20.04 host as reported by Keith & Ian, something i not have yet.

Yes, and if you know anything about New releases.... It will probably go away with future OS Updates. The same thing happens with Apple. You'd go crazy trying to fix Every little quirk in Every new Update, especially with something so trivial. The current Manager in the AIO is the same as it was in 14.2, and it's been working Fine since 14.2, in many different versions of Linux. Try fixing the 20.04 quirk and you risk breaking something in a different version.
Not Worth It.
