I'm not a mathematician, but I suspect that there is a percentage of seti@home participants that have outstanding work, that have been sidelined as a result of CV-19 and may never return so their systems can complete the work.
I certainly hope this is not true.
Helping where I can. Hindering everywhere else.

Message 2043886 - Posted: 9 Apr 2020, 18:28:23 UTC - in response to Message 2043851.

They should have changed the deadlines to 1 week or something when the announced the hibernation for this very reason.

I have been living with a 2 day deadline for the last 5 years. My MAC is so powerful that I can only grab a total of 200 work units which between the processors and GPU will only keep it busy for 2 days. I didn't really care in the past because I just wanted enough to ride out an extended outage however I have fallen back to my alternate project even though there is still work to do here. As my computer has reached the point where it's checking in once a day, it's likely I have seen my last work unit here unless a massive amount is freed up.

The odds are this isn't the only hoarder out there as software like this tends to exist in the underground. If enough people did it, this may be one of the reasons why the project required such a large server just to service our computers.

If you set a very high Resourse Share to SETI vs. other projects, eg 1000:1 your system should continue to attempt to get work from SETI every 30 minutes as far as I know.

I would welcome comments on the best way to do this from the experts.

Looks like I still have 109 in progress and 508 pending validation. My pendings are all a mix of v7 and v8 cpu work. My GPU's are working on collatz and getting about 8 million credits a day. I'll get that toaster in no time now.

Credit from collatz is pretty meaningless IMO.

Change pretty to extremely.
I thought of running my GPUs on it for a while just to see how high my RAC could get, but i'd rather spend the money needed for the power on something (anything) else.
Given the state of the economy now, i'll be needing that money for other bills anyway.

I ran it for a very short period of time when I got my first GPU and it was the only project it could run, it was a real low end GPU. After I saw what the point of the project is, which IMO is trying to disprove a logical mathematical regression, I felt more stupid than I normally do.

. . Yes, I have noticed that the default backoff has been increased yet again, it seems it is no longer 10 mins (606 Secs) but is now 30 mins (1818 Seconds). This makes it very hard to get lucky in the 'get more work' lottery. Not that I was getting much (or any) when it ws 10 mins.

That is the problem that I am having with 7 CPU only machines that ran out of work on the 4th of April. The only project that they run is Seti. What do I change to get them to ask for work more often than once or twice a day. Please keep in mind that I am not a computer genius, so a simple explanation would be appreciated. Thank you. Angie.

I'm not sure if this change was done in order to reduce the load on the servers to an acceptable level, and whether it might be reverted if they can cope in the next few days
The Replica Database is looking in better shape than it has for the last few weeks
My Windows machine has now run out of SETI work, My Android tablet still has 8 tasks in progress, 2 will finish in a few hours, but I switch between 8, 4, or 2 cores according to what else I am doing
I've added Rosetta and LHC to one of them, and will probably do the same to the other when I get to the last few SETI tasks.

It depends on available RAM and Disk space, https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php gives details of other BOINC projects.
Someone else can probably advise the best way to adjust Resource Share better than I can, it's a long time since I changed it.

Thank you Keith T. for responding to me. What I am trying to do is to get my towers to ask the Seti servers more often for work. If it helps, they have 4.0GB of RAM, and 99+GB free disc space available to Bonic and 99+GB free not available to Bonic. Seti takes up 14MB of disc space, there is nothing else on there. I don’t know what setting to change to get it to contact the Seti servers more often. I currently have the storage set for 9 days of work and some have an additional 4 days, some have an additional .1 day of work . Again I am no expert by any means and I’m sure it shows lol. Any help would be good. Angie.

Set the "additional days" to 0.1 to get it to poll BONIC and Seti@Home servers more often.
Start considering what other research you might want to support. You are not going to get much of any work from S@H.

. . Or you can set 'additional days' to 0.0. But you are right, there is precious little work coming out from S@H these days, resends are slim pickings.

I feel pretty stupid, as I had no idea that new work for this project was being shut down. After several days of an empty queue, I couldn't figure out what was going on so I came here only to discover sadness. (OK, perhaps I'm being melodramatic.) As an aside, there was no message in my BOINC Manager (that I recall seeing) that provided any indication....

While I'm not in the top 1% worker bees, I am proud to have been on board Since May 1999.

All the best.

. . Unless you monitor the news flashes or check the threads regularly it is easy to miss such things. And you are not alone in being sad about it. But the sad reality is things change ...

. . Good luck with whatever lies ahead.

I did get a notice about SETI shutting down, I would imagine it would have been universal? But sometimes those notices seem to be a bit hit or miss.

Did you see my (& others) previous reply to you about suggestions for other projects? (end of previous page).

I've been in for a while also, since 20 May 1999... just shy of 22 years.

I did see the notice about the project ending.

I would like to see a review of the MOST interesting / anomalous findings in the projects history someday.

I'd be willing to bet that they just shut down the PC when SETI went into hibernation. Those tasks will sit there until the deadline is reached and the server(s) will have to send them out to other hosts. Like mine, which I still have set up to get GPU tasks. :)

Have a great day! :)

Siran

Not shut down as they downloaded a WU today.

I found where 25k of the WU's are hiding.
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=8873154

thats 1 PC. Cant see why they did this unless they were trying for some milestone.

That user is even better with 55k task on 1 PC

I want to thank everyone that helped me. Today I got a total of 3 work units for the 8 idle towers. That is better than nothing. I am going to run another project, not sure which one yet. Angie
