Just FYI: you can't control the PROJECTS but you can choose categories at Science United.

I tried it, but I just saw weird behavior... projects attaching and then detaching, projects not able to successfully connect with the client. The later wasn't as a big of a deal, but it just seem to be a waste of effort for projects to keep being reloaded.

That said, that's been a whiles and I haven't followed along developments so quite possibly they gotten bugs ironed out... although I don't know why you would want to iron bugs, that just seems to be a big waste of a perfectly good iron plus I imagine the smell probably be horrid...but I digress. Even BOINC had (and still has) bugs to work out.

I do think David Anderson's were well-meaning even if this isn't quite the right audience to market too. However, if you are trying to get others involved in distributed computing who aren't tech-savy, SU is potentially a good choice.

The weirdest thing in SU are its message boards. Since most of its users are newbies, who were not BOINC users like me, they ask often simple questions and I try to answer whenever I can. Well, both the question and my answer have disappeared from the message board, but in my SU home page my answer is reported if I ask to see it.Also the developer(s) never answer to questions, so users are not supported in any way.

I don't believe the data given by Bowman. If Summit ( number 1 of Top500), Sierra (2) and other super aggregated together reach 330 petaflops, it is impossble that an assembly of PCs reaches 470 petaflops.
Tullio
Sorry, my first version was in Italian.

Sure it can.
The number of aggregated cpu cores and Nvidia gpus dwarf the Summit Supercomputer.
Summit has 9216 Power9 cpus @22 cores each = 202752 cores.
Summit has 27,648 Nvidia gpus

Number of BOINC hosts is 1,000,884 with 85% active = 850751 hosts who have at least 1 cpu with 1 core. Most cpus these days have at least 4 cores up to as many as 32. With the lower 4 core per cpu bounds, that equates to 3,403,005 cores. So with just that metric, BOINC already outnumbers Summit in cores by 16X.

And lets argue that each of those hosts has 50% of the gpu market against Intel and AMD and that gives you possibly 500,000 Nvidia gpus running. A factor of 18X more gpus than Summit.

The BOINC home page says BOINC reaches 30 petaflops. Summit reaches 148 petaflops according to the Top500 list.

Just a proposal:

Why S@H don't make it's part on the Covid-19 crises and delay the end of new work for a couple of months, until the crises stops, that could help us to stay at home passing the quarantines.

Like the approach :)

On the Berkeley Online Newsletter there is an article on PANOSETI optical searches for ET in which UC Berkeley is involved, but there is no mention of SETI@home, as usual.

So, how do I get rid of GPUGRID from my BOINC projects? The Remove button is greyed out.

And even though I gave SU an email address when I signed up, GPUGRID does not recognise it, and says you can only register via BOINC anyway...
(Gave up with folding - can't control how much CPU it uses and my poor old fan is going bonkers. Thank goodness they had an uninstall.)

The Remove button is greyed out when BOINC is being controlled via an account manager, such as Science United. You would have to modify your allowed projects via the Science United website.

And, since Science United doesn't provide that degree of precision control, you probably want to detach from Science United and select your own projects manually, and join them through an account which allows you access to project web sites, preference settings, and help communities.

Hi Richard,

I looked at the SU website and put off doing it and it looks like that was a good decision. Why does SU exact so much control over what we want to do elsewhere? Who's idea was it anyway? Also, from what I read here in the fora, one has little to no control over what work one wants to do as well.

I won't be doing SU any time soon.

Have a great day! :)

Who's idea was it anyway?

David Anderson is the sole creator of Science United.
You may know him as the co-creator of BOINC.
He is also the person that has been trying to shut down Seti for a couple of years.
He succeeded finally.

Hi Keith,

Yeah, I know who DA is. He has the same name as my brother.

Did he start SETI@home or was his sole claim to fame BOINC? And if it's the latter, why would he want to shut down SETI? Or even if he had a hand in starting SETI@home, why would he want it shut down? SETI@home is an historical feat. Using the world's computers as a super computer. I was and still am amazed with it.

Well, technically they're not saying SETI is shut down. We'll see...

Have a great day! :)

He was was a member of the SETI team right from the beginning - it was a team effort, not just one person.

And BOINC - with a much bigger team - grew out of the original 'SETI Classic'. I think I've counted up to around 150 volunteers' names in the contributors' lists.

He wants to write his final paper and retire. He isn't at all interested in passing the torch to another generation, if he can't get his final paper written. To get it written the data collection has to stop or so he thinks.

A smarter man might just image the dataset and write the paper from the image and let someone else carry on collection.

Frankly the real paper to write marries all the different SETI projects data sets and sees if ET sends laser pulses one week and radio the next.

Don't forget, there is already an over-arching Berkeley SETI Research Center, which includes SETI@Home but a whole lot more besides. I don't think David Anderson is part of the team there.

David thinks of himself as the ultimate computer programmer. His final paper will be about how he got the answer, not about whatever the answer turns out to be.

Please forgive me but could be a great scientist, an ultimate programmer, some of us who read his code has a different opinion.

Looking the last msgs, finally somebody post the real reason why S@H is going to hibernation, i have a suspicious but has no real info to be sure. I'm very sad to hear the true after all this years.

Hope someone pick the torch from the ground and continue to focus on the primary target, find an ET signal.

Eric has already posted the reason- Money.
They can run Seti@home, or analyse the data we have produced & then do the science paper (which was the whole reason for Seti@home existing in the first place), but not both.
If, when they had their requests for donations each year they got $1 million+, then Seti@home would still be running. It's that simple.

Hell, if i were as rich as Bill Gates or Warren Buffet i'd happily give then the hardware well in excess of their needs for now & in 20 years time, along with money to keep Seti@home going and to get data from more sources & i'd still have more money than God & no idea what to do with it. But i don't. So i can't.

And so here we are with Seti coming to a rather sad, grinding & whimpering end and not even making it to the official March 31 cutoff date.

I intend to keep processing WUs until S@H has no more to send me. Heck, my RAC has increased almost 4-fold since the new computer 10 days ago. More's the pity.

Still, money talks. Money makes the world go 'round and makes us go around the world. And nobody keeps the same job forever.

When S@H stops sending me WUs I will look for other worthy projects. I do not need to disparage the dreams and aspirations of others and I hope that what we have learned and will learn from S@H will inspire a continuing search for knowledge and not only about ET.
