I was seeing if it would be worth it for me to run some Rosetta, generally I don't like CPU processing since it's much less efficient.

The job that Rosetta does can't be done on GPUs, so CPU's are the most efficient way to get it done.

I just stole another 16GB of memory from other hosts to get 32GB installed in the daily driver which I added Rosetta to last night. Seeing up to 1.4GB per 8 hour task and generally around 1.1-1.2GB for most. Now I can run half my cores which was impossible on just 16GB.

I had to run only 28 cores on my 32GB Ryzen as I was getting halts for lack of memory when I was running 29 cores. I am runniing my three GPUs reserving 2 core each so there was not extra at 29 cores .

You can tell the website how long you want the cpu to run a task and it will send you ones that run near that. When I had it set to 1 hour, I got tasks that ran about 1.5 hours or less.

I am experimenting with the default setting (8 hours) to see if I get more Coronavid19 tasks.

Tom

I am running at 4 hours and am getting about 50% COVID-19 tasks.

No it does not use AVX

Getting more RAM is no problem since my systems with the most CPU power run cheap DDR3 ram. changing from 32GB to 64GB isn't that expensive. maybe $50. but I have rather old CPUs (E5-2600v2) so maybe still not worth the electricity use. Does the RosettaCPU app use AVX?

About how much system RAM is required per CPU job for Rosetta?

I have had upto 1.3GB on the regular task 4,08? under Linux.
There is a version called Mini-Rosetta which uses less.

About 1 GB IIRC
It varies quite a bit, i've had Tasks using over 1.2GB, on the message boards there have been reports of some over 1.5GB a while back.
On my 6c/12t system (all in use), it's generally been around 12GB of RAM in use, and just under 8GB of HDD space with a 1 day cache.

Interesting looking at the graphs for Rosetta.
Thy had 300-400k Results in progress, then around 14th March the numbers started climbing, with a very large spike just in the last 24hrs. Now up to 1.5M.

Hehe, when thousands of SETI folks move to those other projects, they will all go up in flames anyhow.
So, no need for any optimized CPU and GPU version, and no need to to correct them when it comes to GPU crunching either.

Just went to put one of my systems on Rosetta@home, and
Project is down
The project's database server is down. Please check back in a few hours.

I somehow don't think many of the other distributed computing projects (especially medical ones at this point in time) realised just what they were in for when Seti announced it's hibernation.

Edit-
Looks like they may be coming back to life, just picked up some wok from them.
It's just a shame they haven't made use of volunteer developers as Seti has- from a quick read of some of the threads in their message boards, their applications are pretty much of the same level as Seti's original CPU application. Not makeing use of any SSSE extensions, let alone AVX.
And one thread on making use of GPUs, someone pointed out how unsuitable GPUs are for any real sort of computing work compared to multi core CPUs, with many supporting posts to that statement (*extreme eye roll*)

Doing my bit for science. Running 9 Rosetta on my 3900X. The first Covid-19 ran in about 90 minutes.

Yep, so far 2020 has been hell around here. First, my favorite Cat died in January. In mid-February my 90 year old Bed-bound Dad died of something that fit all the symptoms of the Chinese virus. Of course, back then they weren't testing anyone for the Virus, especially if you had been in Hospice for over a year and Bed-bound. Then in March SETI died. I'm dreading April. The only Good thing that happened was no one in direct contact with my Dad has turned up ill...that I know of, and I'm finally receiving Social Security checks. Big changes. I suddenly have this overwhelming sense of Freedom. I'm not quite sure what to do with it yet, maybe I'll come up with a plan once all the paranoia ends. I'm perfectly healthy, and apparently have stared the evil in it's eye and held it's hand. Now if I could just find some TP in one of the stores...

Well, given the present situation with the Virus, while i still have a job (unlike so many) the amount of work to do is expected to fall off a cliff, and the chance of me seeing any overtime for the remainder of the year is basically none. Even if i don't end up being stood down without pay at some stage.
So even if Seti were still running i'd be taking my GPUs out of commission and just running my CPUs (and maybe only one of them at that) so i can afford to keep paying my mortgage. So while i may join up with a CPU only project, it's most likely going to be a case removing that portion from my power bill as well, to get me through the hard slog ahead.
Things have become dire indeed.

I will have to ponder that issue. While I am committed to finishing to the end of month with as many gpus as I can manage to run after that I could switch down to one gpu per box or probably one computer with one gpu and still feel involved.

And hope my level pay plan of $480/month begins to do down...
