@ Ian

. . Well it's been fun. The weather is entering the too hot to handle season, 28 C overnight and up to 35 C during the day in the computer room. The hottest machine doesn't budge far from the 80C mark so I have already shut it down. The other machines might last out the month but no longer I fear.

. . Did the boffins take any notice of the results on Maxwell cards. I would like to think it made some difference by getting them running v1.28.

Crunching for World Community Grid, now managed by Krembil Research Institute, Ontario, Canada, Its project, Mapping CancerMarkers, is mostly what I get. Coincidence?

Nope - it is easily explained... There's an enormous amount of MCM1 work to be done, and if you don't have any control over the workload mix you'll tend to get MCM1, then OPN1, then whatever else might be available... And it was like that long before the [still ongoing] transfer from IBM to Krembil :-)

Users with conventional BOINC accounts on WCG can tune the amount of each project type they receive - however, I don't know whether that's possible for those connecting via Science United...

Cheers - Al.

Out of curiosity do you get any GPU work along the way? It would be awesome if it was possible to make a GPU app for Mapping Cancer Makers, it would certainly help the project along nicely. I wonder if they would run into the same situation as the current GPU project? We will only find this out if an app is made

Bernd just replied and stated that he has opened up the scheduler to allow Maxwell cards to get the new app.

. . (doing my best Mr Burns impression) ... Excellent!!!

. . Some people out there are going to get a pleasant surprise when their old Nvidia cards are suddenly matching the AMI units ... :)

if they have a large cache, it could take some time before the 1.28 comes into rotation.

also the delivery of the app still depends on having the right driver and openCL version. if they don't have newer drivers, they wont get the new app

. . After posting that it occurred to me to check what sort of workload they were carrying. Both seemed to be the kind of hosts that run workfetch at something like 20 days. So even with the right drivers it would be weeks before their results showed the new app. I have found a good host (thank you Harri), running a similar unit to myself with two GTX970's and apparently running the right drivers and a sensible workfetch, who began getting the new app partway through Wednesday the 26th. His rig is looking good. Well done Berndt. Maybe a little notice somewhere to let Maxwell users know that they should update their drivers if they want to improve the efficiency of their GPUs. :)

Stephen

PS I picked up some new fans for my rig with the 970s. The rear fan bearing had seized completely and it was just blocking the vent opening so I had removed it, but the 2 front fans are pretty sickly as well, literally 'limping'* and not being very helpful. So I am replacing them all with nice new Corsair MagLev fans, with higher air flow rates and static pressures. The rear is staying at 120mm because that is all it can mount, but the new front fans are 140mm up from 120mm. I am hoping the improved air flow will allow me to continue running that unit for a while longer.

*the fans are slowing down for no reason and then spinning back up so I am sure their bearings are about to die as well.

. . While things are in pieces I will remove the GPU cowlings as well and make sure their heat sinks are not clogged with dust. Every little bit helps.

Good fans.
I've replaced both front fans in both of my cases with ML140s, and was able to move the existing 140mm front fans to replace the 120mm rear fan. That & setting the case fans to be controlled by the VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) temperatures, dropped the temperatures in the case (and the VRM) by several degrees, even when the ambient temperatures are up in the high 30s (°c).
They are noisier than the original fans, but the drop in temperature is well worth the extra noise.

. . Hi Grant,
. . Thanks for that feedback. The noise spec (37dba) was worrying but the temp is the main issue. If I can get the temps down by a few degrees it will be worth it.

Just dropping the ML140 fan rpm's to 1700-1800 from their full blast 2000 rpm knocks the offending whine noise down to tolerable and doesn't really diminish their air moving capability.

. . I will give that a try, thanks Keith. But after the noise of the grime encrusted old fans with their shot bearings the new ones are a pleasure :) Also I was pleasantly surprised to find that cleaning the fans on the 970s has rendered them somewhat quieter too. But best of all the hot 970 is now running almost 10 C cooler ..... yay!

. Hi Ian,
. . I considered the Noctua option because they are good fans, I am using a 90mm Noctua in another rig. But when I was window shopping I discovered I could get the 2 x Corsair 140mms for less than 1 x 140mm Noctua. That sold me :).
