Do we have a full list of the projects that are currently doing covid related work? Meow? "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." ![]() |

Do we have a full list of the projects that are currently doing covid related work? Rosetta (can add through boinc) Folding at Home both have current covid projects. World Community Grid (WCG) is in beta testing for a covid project (can add through boinc) |

Wow!!! Very nice :))) Wow indeed! Thanks for a giggle. s@h gets a mention amongst others. Shame that software is decades out of date snake oil... I'm sure everyone is aware that all recent OSes use some of the system RAM as a disk cache. On Linux, I still run Boinc from "tmpfs" which is a filesystem in RAM. That setup is from early 2000's to allow back in those days for the hard drive to spin down overnight. Regardless, with the performance of modern day drives of any type, there's now no real need for a RAMdisk for such as s@h. Still, quite a find and quite a giggle. Also, a very sad historical hangover that such outdated silliness is still being sold... Actually I started looking for RAM-drives for Windows to maybe reduce Rosetta's I/O on SSD and reading about zRAM on their forums. Also it could reduce swapping to HDD/SSD. It seems Win10 has smth similar but less configurable. The idea to use compressed RAM-drive , not just RAM-drive is interesting. EDIT: for example right now HDD-LED on my PC flashes regularly. It does 4 Rosetta tasks +MW of NV GPU. And it seems pagefile in intensive use. So I would investigate the idea to put pagefile on _compressed_ RAM-drive little more... I'm sure everyone is aware that all recent OSes use some of the system RAM as a disk cache. So did the O/S "Monitor" I used in the early 1970's. Had a two sector cache, then called a buffer. But if you wanted better speed you were advised to set the buffer up in your program's own RAM so the O/S didn't have to copy your data to its buffer before/after it did the I/O. Of course that was before hard drives had their own buffers so it had to be done in the CPU RAM somewhere. |

Something you need to test is if compress the RAM disk add too much overhead compared with a non compressed one. Obviously you have a huge gain over the HDD anyway. ![]() |

And the most effective one still that advised - to keep data inside app's own memory w/o any I/O if possible :) SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them. |

Something you need to test is if compress the RAM disk add too much overhead compared with a compressed one. Yes, how big compression overhead is the question. Exactly that question I asked regarding zRAM :) here: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=13791&postid=95595 But there are "border"cases. When app can't process at all due to out of memory error. So, no matter how big processing power - you just can't use it - app doesn't fit in RAM. For SETI we almost didn't touched by such problem SETI app working set not so big. But Rosetta tasks or Einstein's continuous GW tasks are the quite different story. They can suffer from memory limitation and just can't be able to use all cores at once. SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them. |

So, no matter how big processing power - you just can't use it - app doesn't fit in RAM. I know the feeling, yesterday when i tried to increase in E@H from 4 CPU GW to 6 my hosts hangs. I only have 16 GB of memory on it and each GW is using up to 2.1 GB! WoW! Now i have 12 threads CPU but could only use 4 unless i add more memory even if i'm running with only 1 GPU enabled. I rely miss Seti small memory footprint WU. :( ![]() |

... Now i have 12 threads CPU but could only use 4 unless i add more memory even if i'm running with only 1 GPU enabled. I rely miss Seti small memory footprint WU. :( In that case if memory limited, you will get better performance by turning the 'hyperthreading' OFF. It is pointless to have the small extra overhead of the hyperthreading slowing down your CPU cache and the OS by whatever small amount if you can never gain any speedup with the extra threads. You may even see a performance boost with fewer threads due to then gaining better use of the CPU caches! Aside: The Intel hyperthreading can only give about a 30% performance boost even for optimum ideal conditions. Often, you can only gain a paltry few extra percent. (However, Intel gained a fantastic x2 Marketing boost!) Happy cool crunchin', Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

I rely miss Seti small memory footprint WU. :( Hi Martin Yes i was running without hyperthreading 1 GPU + 4 CPU. Then i try to run 6 CPU WU with no GPU and that was when my host hangs due the low memory (i not use swap). My initial idea was test and if worked with to hyperthreading on but no joy. Anyway thanks for the tip ![]() |

Did you specifically turn off swap? If you installed a standard Ubuntu installation, you have a 2GB swapfile. You can check if you do with: swapon -s Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Did you specifically turn off swap? If you installed a standard Ubuntu installation, you have a 2GB swapfile. Yes i turn off it. I never like to use swap files even from the windows era. I know bad habit due the use of slow HDD. juan@juan:~$ swapon -s juan@juan:~$ Running 4 CW + 1 GPU it uses 10.7GB of 11.6GB available (16 GB main memory). I know i have few memory sticks with some aspirins hidden in some place here, will try to find. ![]() |

I'm still bouncing between new projects trying to find a home. I'm also thinking of taking a break as it is summer here and the added heat is not wanted. I'm back at rosetta as the boards have familiar names posting to them. Looks like I missed all the bruhaha over there. The covid project also makes me feel useful. WCG still doesn't have their covid project up yet. |

I'm still bouncing between new projects trying to find a home. I'm also thinking of taking a break as it is summer here and the added heat is not wanted. Rosetta definitely got some good boost last week. I'm doing Rosetta while COVID-19 spreads, then will leave only E@h perhaps. + some more or less sensible project that can use old hardware. So far even whole spectrum of projects I tried can't cover the range of hardware SETI did. SETI project is really unique. Also started to switch off some of devices due to heat.
