I have been here since 1999. Sorry to see this project go, but you would think that something would have happened by now.

World Community Grid has a lot of worthwhile projects to contribute to. If we can't find ET, perhaps we can cure Childhood Cancer or figure out Africa Rainfall patterns...

I am seeing that as a common thread. Run a biology-related project on your CPU and an astronomy-related project on your GPUs.

I have run Rossetta in the past and may in the future but right now the bulk of my CPU threads dancing the last dance for Seti. Then they will resume over at World Community Grid (a BOINC project aggregator that runs "socially conscious" projects, most of which are biology oriented).

I've been looking at Einstein as a new home. They were friendly enough to open a spot in their boards to let us chat on Tuesdays, so that earns them bonus points in my book. How is their uptime? do they have a weekly outage? do I need to configure my system differently?

AFAIK no weekly outages. But their tasks are huge (in RAM usage metric). On 32-bit OS I got memory issues when SETI queue dry and Einstein's tasks come into play.

The only advice that I can give is to check out the memory requirements. Seti does not use memory as such, so you can turn down the GPU memory clock to the minimum to save heat output. Other projects do use high memory clocks for best performance.

Excellent point! On Einstein@Home I was surprised when some of my cpu tasks started displaying "waiting on memory". I may have to go out and buy an upgrade to 32 GB for that box.

I have not had that issue with World Community Grid. Does Folding at Home run both gpu and cpu tasks?

I don't think so, but the team (and individual) search behaves rather badly if it can't find a hit returning "Bad Gateway" instead of "not found".
It doesn't look as if anyone has started a team starting with "SETI".

I think it's a fair question to ask. When the hibernation happens, people will make a choice: some will switch to another project, as you have done, and others will mothball their rigs and save on the electricity bills. Either is a perfectly reasonable response. And I think setting up a swap-shop for people making either adjustment could help.

But, talking of electricity - If I were you, I'd set your sights above a GTX980Ti. In the current scheme of things, that's an old and gas-guzzling technology. See what offers come up in the 10xx or 16xx ranges.

I'll take a big gamble and chance posting this here, as I'm not sure this is really the right place, or indeed any place.

I have been trying for a while now to upgrade my lowly GTX750Ti card to a GTX980Ti. But even second hand ones are £150-175. It occurs to me that in view of the forthcoming hibernation, some crunchers might just shut down some rigs rather than move to another project.

I would be quite happy to pay up to £100 for a s/h 980Ti card if anyone has one surplus to requirements to be used on FAH.

If you can find a used P100-102 it should give you barely sub-gtx 1080Ti performance at a much lower price. I found some for $250USD or less. It doesn't have any video output so if you need that its not going to fit.

A used gtx 1060 3GB will double the performance of a gtx750ti (personal experience under S@H). And use less electricity than a 980ti.

Seti@Home classic workunits: 29,492 CPU time: 134,419 hours

You could also get a brand-new GTX 1050 Ti 4GB, with benefit of full guarantee. The 1060 has been discontinued, so I can't do a direct comparison, but I have two crunching (7118033, 8121358) so you can get an idea of throughput. Like your existing 750 Ti, they require no additional power, which would make it an easy swap.

A lot of people were going to E@H and Rosetta@Home (for corona19 crunching).

It's not a question of luck. They would have to write some GPU Applications first - and that's not a trivial exercise. Especially if you haven't programmed a GPU before.
