If the 'volunteer' section is closing on 31st march, then why is my PC still downloading data to be processed, that has a 'early May' deadline ? Mar. 31 is only when new work will stop being made. The servers will still be around for a while to receive results and send out re-sends for invalids, etc. ![]() |

This is so sad. I've literally been running this project for half my life. I began in 2002! How about a nice paper certificate for contributors with 1,000,000+ credit? Something of significance or memorabilia? ![]() |

If I were the paranoid type I would probably think that the real reason for stopping was because we've known the ET's have been here for years and it's just silly to keep looking. |

If I were the paranoid type I would probably think that the real reason for stopping was because we've known the ET's have been here for years and it's just silly to keep looking. They decoded a message stating "There is no one out here, stop looking." I'm putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all, I think, that any conscious entity can ever hope to do. |

I would like to remind everyone of an email we all got dated December 27, 2019. I would like to hear the comments from administration. It definitely seems contradictory. On one hand, only a few months ago it sounded like there would be tons more data coming from multiple sources for us all to process. Now, it's hibernation and pretty sudden at that. I think it's like some others have already said. The IT issues are taking away from their available time to perform the next stage of the work and that is deemed more important. On the other had, I'm not sure I agree with the "diminishing returns" bit. Perhaps for their immediate goals it is true but it's not as if the whole sky has been analyzed in every way possible. Until that happens, there's every reason in the world to keep looking and there seems to be a lot of data still available or potentially forthcoming to look at. |

everyone can write what they want here, but nobody will receive a qualified answer! not after 20 years of voluntary help. that is very poor. we have had 20 years. you don't have an hour to answer a few important questions ---- WE WANT YOU ---- - Space Quest Website - |

If what my computers have analyzed needs to be reanalyzed, then why isn't our computers doing it to help out? that's the problem. and nobody will answer it. it is incomprehensible to me how little information all participants are satisfied with. after all these years, just a brief announcement. ---- WE WANT YOU ---- - Space Quest Website - |

What about PANOSETI ? Thanks for the post. Hadn't heard a thing about this new project. You would have thought it would have been mentioned in the original announcement. This article does the best to explain it. https://news.berkeley.edu/story_jump/new-telescope-to-look-for-laser-pulses-from-life-around-other-planets/ Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Just make sure you visit the certificate page on March 31 or before the project closes this URL. Print out your Seti Contribution. https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/cert_print.php Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

If what my computers have analyzed needs to be reanalyzed, then why isn't our computers doing it to help out? Next processing stage requires access to whole database. So it can't be distributed. We do first part that can be separated to many unlinked pieces. Next stage will link results of all those parts together. SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them. |

BTW, if scientometrics plays same role in US universities as it became to play here SETI core team in big trouble for years already. Publicational activity quite low so it could be hard to justify own places @US Berkeley staff. No matter how important research you do, if it provides low "scores" - you in trouble... So, quite possible they really need to publish and spend whole time on papers preparation. Just because of those "external"reasons. SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. Sorry to see this day come, but it's expected, of course, nothing lasts forever. I've been with Seti since the very beginning, first running on an 8086 IBM clone & a Hayes 300 baud modem. Were it not for SETI and wanting to get the most WU's done as possible, I would have never spent so many thousands of dollars on ever-faster computers over the years. I recently upgraded to the most powerful computer I have ever had & a video card that alone cost over a grand, just for the ability to do more WUs with SETI in mind, it's the only project I have that uses the GPU and I don't have one game on the computer. Hopefully, you'll call on us in the future to embark on SETI II, I'll likely still have this computer & it'll be good for a long while. Cheers from beyond the Rim & 73, KA1J |

I signed up on 16 May 1999. Congratulations on creating such an interesting and worthwhile project. It's been interesting. Looking forward to what comes next. |

I've been processing SETIWUs since 2004 so I am sad and disappointed. Will the search for extraterrestrial broadcasts end? Are there any other sites like SETI looking for intelligent life? I'm already participating in Milkyway, Einstein and Rosetta. |

Please read this SETI@Home fundraising letter from Nov. 2019 only four months ago. We continue to obtain raw data from Berkeley's Breakthrough Listen program. From Green Bank, we will be getting data from observations of galaxies and targets selected by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) program. Parkes will soon be conducting a survey plane of our own Milky Way galaxy and we will be distributing those data as well. In those four months, we went from that, to: We hope that other UC Berkeley astronomers will find uses for the huge computing capabilities of SETI@home for SETI or related areas like cosmology and pulsar research. If this happens, SETI@home will start distributing work again. "other" = It won't be anyone from the SETI@Home team currently, so no continuation or succession. It won't be SETI@Home, in other words. "We hope"/"if this happens" = No one's confirmed anything. Maybe no one's even been asked. As far as "diminishing returns", unless someone has some inside info on when ET is calling, more observations can only improve our chances of finding anything. And we haven't even observed half the southern sky (which was what the Parkes data was supposed to do) as the lowest declination of the GBT is only -46° (Arecibo is only slightly steerable so is -1°, even being much further south.) ![]() |

I believe I saw a post indicating over fifty thousand dollars were raised. Also indicated it was sufficient for the need. |
