Another 3 April 1999!! Like ywliu, I've been off & on due to weird life stuff. I'll likely hit my 21st anniversary while processing my last WUs.

I'm sad to see SETI@home go away, but I'm happy to have contributed my small bit to both SETI classic & BOINC. I hope that SETI will have another distributed computing project in the future. I look forward to it.

Not that we didn't know this was bound to happen one day, but indeed it is coming in as a shock.

This said, it completely, absolutely makes sense that the SETI@home scientists now concentrate on the Nebula backend of the project - and it's about time too.

I'm glad the data obtained by SETI@home will be made available to other scientists, and hopefully the SETI@home infrastastructure can eventually be used, one way or the other, by other science project. And thanks to the groundbreaking BOINC to which the classic SETI@@home project led now managing many other valuable projects (Einstein, Asteroids, MilkyWay, WCG, Rosetta, LHC come to mind), it's not as our freed computer cycles couldn't be put to good use on other fascinating and important distributed computing projects.

All is not lost: I'm happy to see that the SETI@home community will be preserved - for a while anyway. The whole SETI field will eventually be transformed by Artificial Intelligence and Quantum computing, but the subject itself will remain a mesmerizing one for the SETI@home community in particular, and for humanity at large.

Its been a good run. I have enjoyed running Seti since 11 Apr 2001.

I'll look at other projects but this one was the one that held my interest for all this time.

I now subscribe to multiple Astronomy magazines - joined the local astronomy club
and have taken a few college astronomy classes.

Its been a pleasure to add my crunching to the total(s) and amusing/frustrating and interesting to
read the message boards

We shall wait and see what the future holds

Well it is a bit confusing as there were fund raisers for hardware etc...I don't quite get it. That being said, it was fun for all those years. Originally started in the late 90's under a different screen name, installed the application on the the computers on my network...everyone's Excel for some reason was really slow ;-0...that and apparently installing it on servers was not my best plan. Then years later joining team Wyoming...with less than 20 members and getting to 13th in the world at one point was just amazing fun. I think at one point I gave up on finding ET and tried more to get into the top 10 with our team. Putting the CPU's toward finding cures for disease is probably a great next step. Thank you guys for the years.

Well.. this was.. unexpected.. I guess I won't make my 20 year anniversary then. :/

This hit me harder than I would've expected.. Sure, I haven't been trucking on non stop during the years, but still. On and off for almost 20 years.

Well guys, when I saw the message yesterday I was a bit shocked.

Tbh I thought that we were working through work units checking for anything interesting, that then got flagged for further investigation? Maybe I got this wrong.

I've been crunching on and off for many years, and am really proud to have helped in the bigger picture.

I have a burning desire to know the answer to that question before I die, are we the only interplanetary intelligent life currently in the universe?

Hopefully that answer gets released sooner rather than later, as I have my own theories that certain governments or authorities already have more knowledge than has been released in the public domain.

I'm another from the 1999 club. I remember the SETI screensaver doing its thing on my Pentium 4 PC. I took a break because of life things but recently was able to devote some spare server time to the cause and felt like I was making up for lost time. I only wish I'd discovered the Linux client earlier... I missed a lot of years of processing.

I'm glad to have participated at the end though. Good luck to the project.

Sad things happen in life.. and apparently @SETI..

I remember the feeling when I first installed the Boinc client back in '99... watching this magical screensaver countless hours on my 1-cpu-1-core AMD Athlon.. the feeling that you belong to something bigger, that you can help achieve something unimaginable.. there are no words to describe this..

Very sad to see the project coming to an end. I have been processing SETI@home since 2002, when my grandfather told me about the project. I loved doing it as it felt like I was staying connected to him, in a small way.

But I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the future, and what the analysis of all of our data brings. This is where the exciting part starts!

Ich bin seit 2003 mit dabei hatte damals mit Seti - Classic begonnen dann der umstieg auf Boinc habe das Projekt immer wieder unterstützt bis zum heutigen Tag, finde es traurig, dass es nun ein Ende hat.

Ich hoffe das gesamte errechnete Datenmaterial so einiges aufzeigt bzw. hilfreich war und ist!

Meine Frage wäre auch was wird nun mit den Daten vom Green Bank Observatory ? bzw. was wird damit auch diese Leute können wir dann nicht mehr unterstützen? Die sind doch noch so lange gar nicht mit uns aktiv gewesen, wozu dann das dann? Wozu dann der Zusammenschluss?

Finde ich echt schade!

I have been with Seti - Classic since 2003, then the switch to Boinc has always supported the project to this day, I find it sad that it has come to an end.

I hope the entire calculated data material shows some or was and is helpful!

My question would also be what will happen to the data from the Green Bank Observatory? or what will we do with these people? They haven't been with us for so long, why then? Then why the merger?

I think it's a shame!

it's a surprise - but not unexpected. Thank you for allowing me to take part in this great project. I have learned a lot and a life without Seti is possible, but ... also necessary. We live in exciting times. It goes forward. Thanks to all the staff and to the great community here! Regards Klaus

I've been with the project since 1999 and it has been a pleasure guys. The search will go on in other ways and lets hope the data is useful. The main outcome is that this project showed the world that collaborative computing communities are possible and welcome, and captured the publics imagination. Now there are millions of us around the world lending computing resources to good causes. All good things come to an end, but new doors open. Wishing the team happing hunting in new pastures.

You can't say that for sure. The crunched data was never analyzed! So we could even found several ET's civilizations or none, nobody knows at this time.
