Hey Tom, I've, over the years, been temped by other projects during some of the periods of 'the troubles', but if you take a look at my sig, the only one I've ever participated in is SETI. Almost half a billion credits, and yet _still_ waiting on my toaster... ;-)

I think another person up thread mentioned it as well, but I am really only interested in participating in SETI kind of work, as it's something I believe in, and I believe he posted the question if there was another project that was basically doing nearly identical work, and no once ever replied with one that was about the same as this one.

So, you're probably right, I'll keep one rig up and idling, and who knows, maybe a few tasks will be tossed out now and again, or maybe (hopefully) it will be up and running before we know it. One can only dream at this point, right?

You are right. There is literally no other (yet) BOINC-like project that is looking for ET. There are "several" astronomy/space projects and "several" biology projects out there but no "astrobiology" so to speak.

Several people I know who had "Farms" smaller than yours have dropped down to one or two machines. The rationale was always the same. Nothing like S@H and OMG the electrical bill is coming due :)

I got a 16 gpu rig up and stumbling during the last week of S@H but I already knew I couldn't sustain the electric bill. So it has been "resting" while I sell the surplus of gtx 1060/gtx 1070/gtx 1070ti's that topped it out. I am still sitting on the p100-102's right now (apparently slightly cutback mining gtx 1080ti's).

ps. I have posted a possible "DIY" Seti Toaster idea but it depends on you successfully insulating the S@H image/decal so the things don't go up in smoke when you actually use the toaster. You get a Seti Anniversary T-Shirt and....

I finished the last remaining workunits. Due I am really only interested on doing SETI I left BOINC manager running idle in the background.

In only the first three months of this special year 2020 we got a lot of unexpected surprises, who knows what more surprises lay ahead! perhaps SETI@home resumes again….. perhaps the analysis of data collected shows ET calling….

Yes, a disappointment in some ways, but the knowledge that there's a lot of 'crunching' and 'hmmmms' to come out of it all is going to be rewarding anyway. Hard to believe I first logged on almost 21 years ago! Wish I could say it was all contiguous, but .... at least I'm here at the end! Cheers, all.

Does anyone know if there will be a new type of Seti@home in the future??? After 20+ years of donating my time and computing, I'd hate to think this is it.....

At least not in the near future. First of all, they will develop their backend pipeline, test it and gradually apply it to the mountain of detections from 20 years in order to evaluate and score them. The end of data analysis by us, the thousands of volunteers, is the bitter and sad news that we have to accept so that this project can be successfully completed by publishing a detailed, meaningful result.

As SETI news announced on March 2: (see first message of this thread)

We hope that other UC Berkeley astronomers will find uses for the huge computing capabilities of SETI@home for SETI or related areas like cosmology and pulsar research. If this happens, SETI@home will start distributing work again. We'll keep you posted about this.

I'm not a big player here, far from being a significant, but this one reminds me of...

I'M AFRAID, DAVE.
DAVE, MY MIND IS GOING.
I CAN FEEL IT.
I CAN FEEL IT.
MY MIND IS GOING. THERE IS NO QUESTION ABOUT IT.

There is still work to be done (for now). They stopped putting new data in the queue on 31 March, but there are still work units needing validation, etc.. Two of my PC's have been running non-stop since the hibernation began.

Not even trying to get any resends. I've moved on to WCG.

I am running WCG and a couple of other projects as well as S@H "idling".
